A memorial to a lonely pub
Burrumbeet is little more than a service station, a couple of houses, and a pub, but I decided, as I was driving to Melbourne, to pull in and have a beer and read my book. However, while I managed to buy a beer I couldn't read my book because the bar tender kept on talking to me. It was then that I realised that country pubs are not places where you can have a quiet beer and a read. What shocked me more was how this guy was telling me how much he hated Melbourne. I like Melbourne, but it was worrying me a bit because I was moving there and here was this guy telling me how bad it was. However, in the end it turned out okay. Oh, and I don't think this hotel exists anymore because I believe they demolished it when they duplicated the highway. Still, being able to say that I have had a beer at Burrumbeet has a pretty good ring to it. read more
