We have our two kids at Busy Bee and love it! Our oldest has been there for 3 years, and our youngest has been there a year. Wonderful staff, meals are great, and, most importantly, our kids are happy. They love going every day and have great relationships with their teachers. The teachers are very responsive to all of our questions and requests. We have one kids with dietary restrictions, and they've been great about following our dietary requests. I was put on a waitlist for March and called to check in and was told by the director that they sent an email but forgot to add me to the email list and could not provide daycare. Mallory was apathetic bordering on rude about this mistake. I cannot recommend sending a child to this establishment. Visited both locations 3/1/22 as we were told after being on the waitlist with a confirmed start date at their L street school that there is no room. This information comes after we were confirmed to start. Director Mallory, stated Director Jude is now looking to have the L Street location hold children 4 months - 3 yrs of age only beginning September 2022. All other children must attend the other location. I do not desire to have my children at the other location as one classroom is deep in an under ground basement, others up several flights of stairs. Doors hanging open where children or staff could fall down flights of stairs to the basement? Something has seriously changed over the years from the reviews I have read. Center is very dirty, unorganized, no curriculum or other present. Quality that may have once been there is gone now the original operator Nancy is no longer alive. It is concerning that responses are being written using the deceased owners name Nancy? My experience is similar to Kristen M.'s review. I would not recommend. Director Jude seems to be hiring anyone she can and placing them in classroom's unprepared to teach or provide care to the children. I would look else where. So far I have really been enjoying this daycare. All of the staff is responsive and friendly. My husband was able to get us on the waitlist early (I think they mentioned we may have been the first on the infant waitlist for their L street location!) There was a minor miscommunication when management changed and we somehow were accidentally put on their May start list instead of March start. Once they realized this error they immediately corrected it. I see from other reviews that this may have pushed other placements further out which of course is not great, but overall I'm very appreciative that they prioritized the family who had been on the waitlist longer. My family was with Busy Bee for probably a total of five years. Our daughter attended from ages 2-6 and then our son attended for a year until I started a daycare of my own in my home and he was home with me. Otherwise, he would have been there till he was 6 as well. It's true...this is not for your uptight helicopter parent. It's not for parents who are too caught up in what trendy method of day care is popular now. Busy Bee is about what works for kids, and they know because they've been in the business for decades. On the surface, it does seem like a very laid-back, hippie type atmosphere. But it's certainly not true they are not academic. My daughter was so incredibly prepared for kindergarten (and, in fact, was far advanced in her class) and that is thanks to Busy Bee. Their 4 year old class is serious about making sure these kids are prepared to go into kindergarten and they make learning fun. The staff isn't in it for show. They do their job and they do it well, but they aren't always there just waiting to impress parents. The kids are happy. I had staff who I personally didn't love in our time but you know what? My kids did and that was what was important. Not only is Busy Bee good for kids, but especially with my first kid, I learned a lot as a parent. Things that I carry with me to this day and try to replicate in my own business. My daughter is now 11 and is still very close friends with girls she met when she was an 18 month old at Busy Bee, and both my kids still point and ask to stop whenever we drive by. I researched for months to find the right place for my toddler. I toured 2 Montessori schools, Discovery Tree at the Bee (no WAY), Rainbow Day Care (grungy) and Forever Young (dirty and depressing). The minute I walked into BZB in knew we had finally found "it". The nursery school is in a Victorian house right across from Winn Park, the grounds are filled with interesting play structures and the Director is wonderful. She's been running this place for about 40 years and I know someone my age who attended BZB as a toddler. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for. The feeling that my daughter is in a safe, loving and stimulating environment is all worth it. We love BZB! read more

I have had kids at Busy Bee for 4 years now and we love it. When we first put our oldest child in daycare she was at another center and when a spot opened at Busy Bee we jumped at the opportunity and it was the best decision. I have always felt that my kids have received excellent care and that Busy Bee has provided fun and educational activities. There is a great community of families at Busy Bee. My oldest is now in elementary school and is thriving due to the foundation built at Busy Bee. We still see our Busy Bee friends for play dates. The staff/teachers are very in tune with the needs of each child under their care and are great at communicating triumphs and concerns. I have never had concerns regarding the cleanliness of the facilities. I regularly witness staff cleaning and sanitizing. I had heard some positive things about this center several years back. My second child is 16 months and I was ready to go back to work. I was told there was a waitlist and this would be a good time to take the tour and decide if we wanted to proceed. The woman who gave my the tour was welcoming but I did not feel welcome by anyone else. I agree with the other reviews about the owner being rude. I was very put off by her tone and I didn't like what she had to say. I don't agree that full- time care is better for a child. I felt like she just wanted full-time tuition. I also did not feel my questions were welcome. For example, why are children who wake up early from nap- time taken outside? There's no area for these children inside? What if it's raining. My older son was not a good napper so I want to know this. Overall, I did not like their philosophy, the atmosphere, or the lack of educated staff. It's a very dated center and the answers to my questions were also outdated. It did not seem clean either. I asked about cleaning staff ( another unwelcome question) and the teachers do it. I don't see how they can watch young children and clean. The teachers I met seemed guarded and I didn't like that. Our daughter loves Busy Bee. We moved here from Atlanta and a very high tech brand new daycare that espoused the latest in learning "breakthroughs". Well they don't hold a candle to the 40 years Nancy has been learning how to help kids develop. (Just the other day as we were leaving for a Club Med vacation she asked us to report back on any good activities she could integrate.) There is a lot of story time and the out door play area is huge and has enough distractions that my child has no interest in leaving at the end of the day. My wife and I feel very lucky to have found Busy Bee, especially since we had our two sons in another pre-school first. Before our first was born, we did exhaustive tours of many of the downtown area schools. After careful research, our boys began at a Montessori school, which seemed great at first. Yoga, foreign language instruction, and a focus on academics really attracted us. Then the staff began to change, and change, and change. They were also cited for not having enough staff on hand. It got to a point where parents started to look elsewhere. To the incoming parent, I bet the place still looked very attractive, but it was more show than anything else. It was a really tough decision for us to make the change, but it is the best thing we could have done. At that time, our boys were 4 and 2. Busy Bee is the exact opposite. They don't blow you away with their nouveau activities or philosophies when you first walk in the door. But stick around and see how the teachers interact with the kids. They truly do care and it shows. They play with and talk to them rather than just supervising, and the outdoor play area is large and a ton of fun. Art is a big part of the curriculum too. More importantly, no teacher turn-over. We have been there for over a year now and are very happy. Our boys love being there and are very close to the teachers. Even the parent nights are different, with more of a community feel than a bunch of strangers who all happen to send their kids to the same school. They do have a dance and gymnastics teacher come in once a week if you want your child to participate. They also do lessons on bugs and volcanoes, cooking and other cool things. Parents are encouraged, but not pressured, into joining in or bringing in things to help with the lessons. Holidays are a big deal and the Christmas performance was really fun. I'm surprised that they don't have a wait list at Busy Bee, but that is probably because they don't go out of their way to wow you with fancy things that don't really matter. So if you want your child to take yoga from a teacher who gives instructions in Mandarin and is gluten free, then maybe look elsewhere. If you want caring, dependable and fun people to care for your children while they learn and explore, then give Busy Bee a look. read more

I needed to update this review and say that the current cook is Patrick, the former owner of Celestine's! Yes, the awesome dude who brought us amazing gumbo and hibiscus tea in Midtown for xx (?) number of years makes dirty rice with beans and avocado, pesto pasta, and so much more. Unlike my older child who experienced a more Americanized-defrost-and-bake menu, this 5 year old has a seriously diverse and adventurous palate. I am continuing to send my child here and found the curriculum for my 5 year old was wonderfully explained to me in September and has expanded my kidlet's language, writing and math skills. They've also started doing neighborhood field trips - to the Q Street post office, Hot Italian, and Sutter's Fort. Nancy, the owner, has had a rough fall losing two long-term staffers, but the main core of staff remains and is communicative. The key to great daycare: you need to get in there and ask questions, bond with staff, and take a work-together approach. Volunteer for a couple hours each month to get on the floor and play, meeting all your kids' peers and expanding your relationship with staff. The kids in Busy Bee's care are really lucky to have such a great experience. I wish I could find something equally awesome for elementary school! read more

My daughter has now been at Busy Bee for a year. She's transitioned from the Annex (separate cottage for the under-twos) into the larger Victorian house on site, and we have been and remain thrilled with Busy Bee. The teachers are engaged, affectionate, and appreciate the children for the individuals they are. The play-based "curriculum" changes regularly, keeping even my boisterous kidlet interested. Play spaces, indoors and out, are reorganized regularly to provide the novelty that's so important for early childhood development. The outdoor play space is phenomenal, and children get plenty of active outdoor playtime, the menu is healthy and varied, and the children are cared for, not just supervised. Our family loved Busy Bee from day one. The fact that the business has been operated by the same owner for over 30 years and many of the staff members have worked there for many years really sold us. As a matter of fact, when we came in to tour the school, there was a father dropping off his son...who was a 2nd generation Busy Bee kid. That was just the kind of referral we needed. Our two children attended Busy Bee from ages 18 months to 5 years old and we were very happy with our experience. Now as our children are going into the 8th and 9th grades, we still have fond memories of Busy Bee. In fact, our children are still very close to the friends they met at Busy Bee. Even though they didn't attend the same elementary school as their Busy Bee friends; they were always the first on the list to invite for sleepovers and birthday celebrations. We loved the fact that Busy Bee had a very down-to-earth atmosphere. They didn't worry about the fancy things...they focused on the important things like: treating people with kindness, love, and respect. Allowing the children to grow and play as kids should. Also, I liked the fact that Busy Bee had a diverse population and a very caring staff. My husband and I thought about Busy Bee again this month. As our son was invited to the 8th grade honor roll ceremony at Sutter Middle School; he and one of his closest friends (from Busy Bee) were both given special awards. Not only did both young men earn straight A's, one was awarded the Outstanding Citizenship Award and the other for Student of the Year. I will honestly say that these two young men were influcenced by the social, emotional, and educational foundation at Busy Bee. If you're looking for a day care for your little one, please consider Busy Bee. They may not be as fancy as some of the other facilities, but they are amazing! read more

My daughter has been attending Busy Bee since September 2015. My husband and I love the teachers and the relaxed atmosphere. My daughter loves gymnastics day, the amazing playground, dressing up in their many costumes, and show and tell. She also loves the food (and yes, it's healthy and cooked fresh every day). I feel like the teachers really care about the kids and spend a lot of time making sure they are able to be creative and still listen to directions. It is a great fit for our family. I live across the alley from Busy Bee and hear the sounds of play, discovery and happiness all day. Happy kids, happy families and a solid staff. On occasion I play guitar for the kids and we have a great time. From time to time my seven year old will play with the kids and it 's a great warm, caring environment. I have been in education for twenty years, 10 as a teacher, 10 as a principal, I have also been a parent for as long so I'd like to think I know a thing or two about children and their development. We didn't even last a week there. My highly social child had a difficult time transitioning from his previous preschool in another city to Busy Bee when we moved here. He started saying he was sick and had belly aches starting the second morning, and when i picked him up I found him off on his own with the teacher sitting in a chair with her feet up not engaging the children. They did nothing to try to help my son adjust to his new environment, or help him meet the other kids. I managed to switch him to another preschool where the teachers are engaging, and actually worked to help my son fit in. He was happier, and made friends fast. I did like the director, and the cook, who were friendly and engaging, but the basement atmosphere and the teachers that didn't seem active were not a plus. And of course not refunding our money did further taint our view. The program for the younger children seemed fun (I could see my younger child enjoying it) and the teachers certainly had more interest in the kids. It was just the pre-k kids that wasn't up to snuff. The play yard was a pretty exciting place. read more

I cannot determine if this child care facility is quality or not, however the immediate service that I received this afternoon was substandard and impersonal. I am in the process of searching for child care for my son and I am choosing to call facilities to get a little more information that maybe their website doesn't offer. The woman who I spoke with this afternoon was rude. When she answered the phone I immediately approached the conversation stating the reason for the call and she bluntly said "if you want that kind of information we have a website you can get it from". Wow...like I didn't know that or maybe I wanted to ask more in depth questions when it might concern the care of my child. I have called four other establishments, all of which were remarkably friendly and helpful. Busy bee was not friendly nor helpful. read more

We have used BusyBee since moving to Sac in 9/2019 and our kid is in the downstairs room, will move on to kindergarten later this year. We have been very happy with it-- it was one of the few that didn't have a waitlist when we moved, was flexible about start date and has a wonderful outdoor space. My child has been happy there even though she is on the anxious/cautious side of things. We find the staff very friendly and like that there is a male teacher, the Scholastic worksheets they do and the focus on social skills. It is not too academic and they make all the food there which has been nice-- they do serve Oreos sometimes. We highly recommend the daycare. read more

My son attended Busy Bee for a year, from ages 2-3, and I have very mixed feelings about the place. I started out absolutely loving it and telling everyone so. Unfortunately, things ended badly for us. My son was having difficulties, and the communication from the school to me was essentially nonexistent until things were too late. It was also, in my opinion, unprofessional. (One woman told me that he would never succeed in mainstream school.) I am also unhappy that Busy Bee did not refund my money for the several weeks I had paid for when he did not attend; this was a financial hardship for me. It has now been a year since we left, and my child is thriving at another preschool. Even after all of this time, my feelings about Busy Bee are not great. HOWEVER, I would say that in most cases, it probably works out wonderfully. The owner really cares about kids, the site is amazing, the food is wonderful, and the opportunities to learn through play are rich. I suspect that something was going on behind the scenes when we were there that caused us to fall through the cracks. I really did not care for one woman who worked with the youngest kids, and according to their website, she is no longer there. It is certainly worth trying, but I would caution all parents to make sure they are initiating communication with the staff on a regular basis, especially if their children are younger. read more

I was a stay at home mommy for three years prior to enrolling my child at Busy Bee. I was picky to say the least! But, from the moment I walked in I was calmed by the atmosphere at Busy Bee and my fear of leaving my son with someone other than myself was eased. The very first thing I noticed was how happy the children were. I visited the school with my son for nearly a month prior to allowing him to go by himself and I literally never heard a child cry. All the children are well mannered, use their words affectively and enjoy themselves while at school. The staff is friendly (and always happy to deal with my silly, overbearing mommy questions), the chef is amazing and the Director is truly passionate about children. This is a free-flowing, organic environment. Some structure, but they allow the kids to be kids. They get dirty, wet and sandy and learn while doing all of it. My schedule has changed several times and they have always been willing to accommodate me. The only issue I've ever had was being overcharged and actually undercharged, but those issues were resolved quickly and without hassle. I would recommend Busy Bee to a friend or family member. I think if you have an involved parent, paired with the staff at Busy Bee you're gonna have one lucky kiddo. read more

My son spent a wonderful year with Nancy and her talented staff at Busy Bee. They provided many creative opportunities for authentic play and growth. From gardening, sand play, obstacle courses built by kids, to water play, a child with a need for movement will flourish. But a quiet child will also enjoy the fantasy-like play areas in the house, with nooks and crannies filled with arts, books, toys, costumes, pets and free play items. We enjoy this place even if we're not blown away by it. Our daughter found just the right level of support and freedom. Uptight, hyper-academic types--this place is not for you. This is a laid-back, fun, child-loving site that does not care about academics. If you're not sure, just visit and you'll know right away. It's run by some really nice hippy-types. There is nothing institutional about it and the playground constantly changes with new toys, things to play on, etc. We did see some transitioning staff while we were there--all of a sudden, this or that teacher was no longer there--but we found that to be unfortunately sort of the norm with day care. As with any child-environment, talk to the staff who will be working with your child and see what you think. We enjoyed most all of the staff who worked with our daughter, as did she. read more

We have been with busy bee for about 2-3 weeks now and have been happy with the school and teachers. Everyone seems so loving. Every time I walk in, a teacher will be with my son soothing and playing with him. The transition to preschool has been hard for him but everyone has been very supportive. We have both our children at Busy Bee and couldn't be happier. I feel good knowing they are well taken care of and having a blast during the day. Before choosing Busy Bee, we visited a ton of other places in Sacramento, and ultimately this was just the right fit for us - a large and fun outdoor area, really yummy food, kind teachers who are happy/active/engaged with our kids, and a community/family feeling with other parents. There are regular events to attend (Easter festivities, Holiday party, Mother/Father day events, etc.) so we as parents feel connected as well. The ability to volunteer for these events is encouraged, but I don't feel pressured to do so, which is helpful as a working person. Busy Bee is great for us!! read more

Busy Bee is GREAT!!! Everyone who works there has the children at the top of their list. Our daughter has been going there since she was about 20 months old an has learned so much. They really take an interest in helping the children learn on a daily basis. Now on to the food....OMG the FOOD! You get to see what they are serving each day on the white board. I have seriously considered enrolling myself just so I could eat there. Our daughter has such great approach to all foods, even something that might look awful. She always tries it. We get constant amazement from our friends, regarding what she will eat. We never have issues at restaurants finding something for her to eat. Just a great place and great people. I absolutely love Busy Bee. My youngest, who started out in the Annex and has graduated all the way to the Pre-K class loves going there! We try to attend every event Nancy and the staff put on and they always treat every member of our family as their own family. My oldest is beyond a handful with his stubborn personality and his autism doesn't help in social situations, but the staff know us and him and they don't judge. This is the day care where you want your kids to have fun, engage with peers and adults, and most importantly, just be kids. Nancy and her staff are always helpful and flexible. My daughter has been attending Busy Bee since age 18 months, and we have had a wonderful experience there! She had been in another day care center (well-known, really expensive chain) for a year, and when she moved to that other center's toddler class, I saw some red flags I think any parent should beware of at the larger academic-stressing centers: 1) My toddler came home with spotless clothes on every day, 2) Very little outdoor play time, 3) "Her" artwork looked a little too perfect, and 4) They were trying to teach one-year-olds the difference between a kite shape and a trapezoid (seriously - she couldn't even talk yet). We were relieved to be able to move her to Busy Bee! Busy Bee is a completely different experience! The staff really cares, and everything is play-based and fun! The outdoor play area is amazing, ever-changing, and definitely used for a long time each day. My daughter experiences art and other sensory experiences as she gets into water, paint, sand, shaving cream, clay, you name it. She loves her teachers, talks about her friends, and often isn't ready to leave at the end of the day. Busy Bee has a live-in cook who makes wonderful food from scratch (not delivered in food service cans like elsewhere), and they serve breakfast, lunch, and three snacks each day. Busy Bee focuses on the whole child and the family. Families are invited to participate however they are able. They will help transition your child into day care - we spent a week visiting before our paid period began. The kids at Busy Bee are nice and care about each other. The teachers always have something to tell me about my daughter's day. I often ask the staff advice about child development issues - they are experts. Strangely enough, my 2 1/2 year-old still managed to pick up her shapes and colors without the flashcard drills of her former daycare. But she has also developed social skills, empathy toward others, the confidence to want to try everything herself, and the trust to ask for help when it's needed. Plus, we only pay about 70% of what we paid at our last day care center. I can't say enough in the way of praise! read more

We have been so happy to have our daughter at Busy Bee. She has been there over a year now and will continue going in the afternoons when she starts Kindergarten in the fall. Busy Bee lets kids be kids, and teaches them through play based and real-life examples. This is not a homework or workbook type of environment, but rather a dig in and get your hands dirty kind of place. The staff are incredible. One of the things that really gave us great comfort was the fact that most staff members have been with Nancy for years! The staff work really hard at creating projects and events for the kids and always are cheerful and caring with the kids. The jump from a small in-home daycare to a large preschool center worried me...but our daughter has blossomed and grown at Busy Bee and every day that I pick her up I see that she has been well cared for and had fun and feels part of a family there. This place has been wonderful for him - when we pick him up at the end of the day he is in a wonderful mood, he laughs and babbles the whole way home. He's picked up so many words in the last month, it's incredible. The teachers are fantastic. The owner has been very nice. I enrolled my daughter at Busy Bee in November, 2008 for her final year of Preschool. She loves it! The yard is fantastic, filled with challenging and fun equipment that made her physically more fit than she would have been at any other school with a run of the mill play yard! The teachers are wonderful!!! I feel confident that my daughter is learning and growing in a safe and encouraging atmosphere because the teachers in her classroom downstairs are nurturing and thoughtful as well as silly and fun. Our daughter has been at Busy Bee about three years. The staff is great! They are all knowledgeable about child development and I always feel my child is safe and learning through their empowerment. The kids have a great play space where they learn social skills, how to respect each other, conflict resolution, and just have FUN! My first impression of Busy Bee was that it was unorganized and hectic, but once I spent the day there with my daughter, I saw that they are very organized, but flexible with each child's needs. Studies have shown that play helps a child's intellectual growth and Busy Bee being play based addresses that. Busy Bee isn't heavy handed when it comes to academics, but they do have a curriculum and when my child went into Kindergarten, she didn't have any problems. They offer so many great programs too, like gymnastics, dance and spanish. Parents volunteer and sometimes kids come back to share what they have learned with the little ones. Busy Bee is a family and I feel like they want what I want, which is to have a well balanced little person that can grow up knowing how to deal with life's challenges. They recently added a new cook to their staff, Patrick, who used to own a very well known restaurant in Sacramento. Patrick makes meals for the kids that are healthy and fresh. No processed foods in his menu! The food looks so yummy I want to eat there too! I am very happy having my child at Busy Bee and highly recommend them. If we are entrusting other people with our kids in the hopes that they are instilling good positive habits, then you need to check out Busy Bee. Drop in and experience it for yourself! Great daycare! Our boys go here three times a week. They have a small group for every 4-5 kids. This place is clean and the children are very well behave. The staff are friendly. We do calls check up, they always answer. Reading activity, meals (or pack your own), outdoor times. Our boys really enjoy sports they do help out with that. You know the staff one on one. Went to tour this facility last week since I'm looking for care for my 3 year old and wanted childcare closer to work. We walk into the front office and the receptionist gets the owner for us to meet. The owner comes in and tries to talk to my daughter after introducing herself... my daughter is shy with strangers - normal behavior for a child, right? Anyone who knows anything about children knows this. So, my daughter screeches "Ahh! " and hides behind me. The owner tells her that she (my daughter) is in her house (the owner) and that she is not allowed to behave that way in her house. My daughter, being only 3 yrs old, just continuous with her Ahh-ing and keeps hiding behind me. Then, the owner goes to the front door and opens it while talking to my child and tells her that she needs to stop doing that (ahh-ing and hiding behind me) or this is not the right place for her. I was so shocked! I have toured many daycare facilities and NEVER has anyone been that rude! The owner then asked my child if she wanted to stay in her house, I looked at my little girl and she looked sad and nodded yes. This happened so fast! The owner tried to dominate my child right in front of me! Did she think I would stand by that? She was not dealing with an insolent teenager that needed to be asked to leave, she was talking to a 3 year old little girl! I stood up and grabbed my child's hand and told her this was definitely not the place for us. My little girl then said "I want to go home"... sad experience at Busy Bee. At every childcare center we have toured, my daughter has done some permutation of this "I don't care to talk to you strange person" behavior, and never has anyone been rude to her. Once the tour in on the way, she mellows out and enjoys playing with the kids at each and every center she has been at. So, I guess if you want your child manipulated with mean ultimatums, then check this place out. If you want a nurturing, understanding environment for your child, then don't waste your time checking this place out. I have never written a review, but this experience was so awful I felt compelled to let parents know... If she treated my child like that in front of me, how does she treat the children there when the parents are not around???? read more

Our son's daycare closed and we have been using another daycare facility which we have not been too impressed with... no accident reports after a serious fall or other injury, lack of consistency of staff with no experience, turn-over, hiring of students who just graduated high school and paying a heavy penny so I called Busy Bee to find out where we were on the wait list and to ask some in questions. The owner was very rude and told me that we were not welcomed at her school. I tried explaining my rational that it's only because we had a bad experience at old day care but she had no compassion or empathy towards my concerns. All i wanted to find out was the schedule for the day, menu and what if a child doesn't eat certain item, could he get a second serving of fruit and to see if their teachers were certified in first aid/cpr and if they had experience. She doesn't want parents to ask questions.... and that bothered me. She was very unprofessional and rude. read more
