Wasn't too sure what to expect from a hotel restaurant, usually poor food with a massive markup…read more.. The food here was okay if a little confused/fussy! There are a few bonbydazzler's on the menu; melon with griddled pineapple, coconut and basil anyone? What were they thinking there- like the worst ready, steady, cook! mystery bag ever, poor Ainsley would be spinning in his chef's retirement home. We were sent out an amuse bouché of fried risotto balls which had so little flavour they just offered an unpleasant texture. Not very amusing at all, served with a cliche of balsamic vinegar. Then we were delivered olives and bread with olive oil and balsamic, meh... I started with the Ham Hock, piccalilli and sourdough. It tasted pretty good but was presented like a raw burger with a squashed slug across the plate. Far too much meat, the balance was well off, although it seemed to be the only starter to come without a coating of balsamic. The cheddar and onion tart was apparently nice but would improve with some onion chutney not drenched in the damn balsamic! Main course was apparently coq au vin. Not as I have ever had it before though. Only one bit of the chicken was cooked in wine the other a cheffy bone in supreme of chicken that was pan fried. There were a few chunks of gammon, some enoki mushrooms some undercooked shallots, leathery leeks and passable mash. This dish was largely free of balsamic but had its trendy cousin pea shoots liberally sprinkled over. This bastardised coq au vin wasn't really to my liking- had it all been cooked together in the traditional style it would have been great, unfortunately the chef wasted his time and effort cooking everything separately. Other meals largely met with similar criticisms, the salmon came with turned vegetables which looked totally naff! I opted for the local cheese board which was okay. I can't say how local the cheeses were as there was no information so I'll just take their word for it. After all Birmingham is well known for its dairy produce... It was served with celery, chutney and walnut bread, call me old fashioned but I'll take a Carr's water biscuit every time thank you! It was balsamic free however- I can only assume they had used it all in the previous courses. Other desserts were similarly hit or miss, the fruit selection even had star fruit on it which I assumed had become extinct as I haven't seen any since the 90's. The other main gripe was it took two and a half hours from sitting down to finishing dessert which was ridiculous. I understand that we were a table of eight but it was hardly busy, if the kitchen stopped buggering around with everything it would have taken half the time! The waitresses were very pleasant, if a little disorganised. The meal would have been much improved if they simplified the meals and stopped trying to impress with outdated fads and additions. I would happily pay a premium for a quality meal but this really wasn't! On a random point the light fittings were the worst I have ever seen; a chandelier surrounded by a semi transparent tube of plastic with the colouring of the bottom of a CD. If they employed an interior designer I hope their ideas book was sealed and buried, the designer sent to Broadmoor hospital for the criminally insane.

Scampi very good, and superb "signature" chips. You get a little motorway noise, but nothing to worry about. Ceiling fans in bedrooms are a bonus in summer. Not needed early Movember, though! :-)

Room was big enough, if not massive, for two people but the beds were excellent and the bathroom well appointed and spotlessly clean. Had breakfast only once in two days which was a mistake. Should have done it both days. Very good. While the rest of the neighbourhood heaves at night, the bar here was quiet, mostly because they only allowed residents into the hotel at night. We were grateful for the comfort. Very happy to recommend and will stay here again.

Jurys Inn is a wonderful Central Budget Hotel…read more I managed to get a good deal on a couple of nights over this easter and it was great having a hotel with such a central position in the city. Just by the canal and an abundance of restaurant. All main attractions in the city less than ten mins walk away. It actually took ages to find a decent place at the right price based on previous reviews. Everyone commented on the noise from party goers everywhere - and in particular with Jurys Inn - the noise from the maids lift. But we plumped for Jurys Inn because they had the B&B deals and the company has a good rep. We simply requested a room away from the lift. As it was on the 11th floor we had two peaceful nights sleep in the most AMAZING bed ever. It was so huge I didn't even notice the Mrs was in the bed next to me when I woke up. The rooms are spacious and so so clean. There's no faffing in the room and no mini fridge (ie temptation) which is perfect for us. The whole hotel was clean and bright and pretty. Good security at night and efficient service throughout. Negatives -Awkward moment when checking in - the guy behind the counter was a tad baffled about two women sharing a double room, bless. -Annoying heating/air conditioning in room. It's just stupid, but if you admit defeat and call reception they can adjust it from there. -Breakfast. Poor lay out, naff choice for veggies. -Paid Wifi Despite the not so goods - for the price you can't get better for Bham City Centre. I would recommend it for couples on a city break of those who are looking for a decent place to rest and refuel.

Awful bed (for me, I like them softer), but loads of room and very very clean…read more This place is genuinely an apartment and not an efficiency. There is a separate kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom and hallway closet. The kitchen hosts a full ability to cook with microwave, cooker, oven, refrigerator and freezer. A small washer dryer combo is in the kitchen as well. Dishes, cups, utensils for 4 folks are provided. I stayed here so I could shop at the open market and visit tourist spots during the day and easily visit family in the evening in Solihull. The central bus station is down the street, so it's convenient to grab the coach at Heathrow to here and if booked well enough ahead, it only costs about $10 for a 2 hour bus ride. Two train lines are within walking distance, easily within 3 minutes. Major shopping stores are Selfridges (visible from your room), Marks and Spencers, and Debenhams. If you do a lot of sewing, a visit to the Silk City store is a must. A lot of the street noise is dampened when you close your windows and doors in the evening. The rest can be eliminated with decent ear plugs. There are warehouses nearby where work begins at 5 am. Wi-fi was included but it wasn't always working.

What a brilliant night!…read more Instead of going away for my hen do I decided to put together a weekend of mini events. I was looking for a night out that didn't cost too much, included food and got us dancing. I decided to come here on the Saturday night as there was a Take That tribute and disco. It only cost us £26.95 each with a 3-course meal included. My sister had popped there in the afternoon to decorate the table and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. All 16 of us turned up, dressed in flashes of pink - my chosen theme - excited and ready for the night ahead. We grabbed a drink from the bar and then we were seated, in an already buzzing room. We ordered from a set menu, with a choice of 4 starters and 4 mains, and the food came out to us straight away. I chose pate as my starter and tender beef with a Yorkshire pudding and veg for my main. They were both really good portions and tasted lovely. The desserts were laid out on a table and you could just help yourself to as many as you wanted - this made my mom's night! They topped up the desserts several times with new sweet treats enticing us in for more every time. We had just enough time to pop to the bar and let the smokers have a quick break before 'Take That' came on. Though they weren't aiming to be a look-a-like group they certainly sounded as good. We were all up dancing and giggling and when the boys had finished we carried on busting our moves until late. The whole night was fantastic! The food, the music and the staff. I'm already booked in to go again to see a different act for a friend's birthday. I can't wait!!!

This is the 3rd Tribute night I have stopped over for, in the last 7 yrs. Shall be going again one one day. Must say; the Tribute artists were so adaptable and entertaining with their singing,impressions and dancing. Saw this act 7 yrs ago - but this was even more special as their routine lasted longer - one hour. Well done both. Attendance was popular with the Hen Party's.

The entrance way is bright and welcoming and the guys on reception were SO helpful kindly offering to show me up to the restaurant where I was meeting a friend for coffee. The restaurant itself is super high end looking and contemporary in design with an outside terrace that will be opening soon....literally perfect for a sunny day in Brum. I am yet to see the food menu here but know there will be a Pan Asian restaurant opening on the top floor. If it is even half as impressive as the hotel teamed with views of the city....it could be a contender for one of the most interesting and impressive settings for an evening meal in the city. One to watch! Looking forward to getting back for more of the food and drinks soon.

Check in was simple and the lobby and bar/breakfast area is very plush. The rooms on the other hand were not quite as plush, I personally don't think the room itself was any better than say premier Inn, but it did the job and we had nice views of edgbaston. However, unlike the budget chains the showers are modern and big, and the air conditioning was silent - both mega pluses! Unfortunately our room and bathroom wasn't the cleanest, but we were staying just for the night and I was too lazy to complain. Let's be honest, my room was located next to a pokestop... I can forgive the slightly dusty floor for this, I needed the balls Breakfast was good and it is served from 9-11am with a good selection of pastries and a chef is at the egg station to cook you omelets, or eggs to order which was a nice touch. I think for £65 it's really good value for Birmingham, especially on a Friday or Saturday night (expedia always have 10‰ codes on too, so you can get a room for under £60). It's a bit out of the way, but an uber shouldn't be to much to get back to the centre of town if you can't be bothered to walk down broad street.

All the wines were fine. Total cost £38. There was no table check, and ask if there was one normally, and was told it should be after 5 minutes. Angela apologised for this not happening. I found all of the staff very good and charming. I might think twice about eating there again given the price, but if I was visiting the International Centre (as I was this time), I'd stay here rather than The International Hotel. I was, however, able to charge it to my room in the other hotel, which I though was handy.

It does take a while to phone up and either speak to someone / or they call back, to make a booking. I found it easier to email my booking request!! But the spa is great. The Ambience is perfect! Staff are lovely!! One thing with fire & ice, each time we visit, there has been at least one thing not working like today it was the hydropool so it means you don't get the full experience for what you pay for. But I still like the spa! I recommend it. Plus the girls in the cafe are great, we couldn't eat all our cakes so the girl boxed them up for me to take home!!!

Thinking it was definitely time for some relaxation I headed to The Belfry for a solitary spa day…read more I had been given a gift voucher for which included treatments and afternoon tea. I called the week before and booked my slots. When I arrived there was some confusion as I was not listed on their systems. After waiting for half an hour in the café it turned out that I had been booked in on the wrong day. This was not a great start to my relaxation. However, the manager who dealt with me was very accommodating and took a 'customer is always right attitude' which went a long way to ease my growing annoyance. Once the issue was resolved I have to admit that I loved this place. It was quiet and charming. The facilities are incredible. The pool was a lovely temperature and the sun loungers were comfortable. There is a glass roofed area where you can lounge in the sun or if it is a very nice day there are loungers situated outside. After a short swim I went up for my first treatment, a facial. It wasn't the best that I have ever had but it was still nice. After this I went for afternoon tea which was incredible. My only suggestion would be to have a few more savoury items to go with the sweet. Next was the Fire and Ice Sensorium. I spent a full hours and a half in this area as it was just so good. Approximately 10 different stations offering different hot and cold sensory experiences including sauna's, showers, ice chips, sun lounge and massage pool. After another hour or two I went for my second treatment, a back massage. Again, not the best I have ever received but still enjoyable. All in all, I came out of this day feeling rejuvenated and had the best night of sleep I have experienced for a while. I would love to give this spa five stars, however the initial mixup (and waiting around) in addition to the so-so treatments have had to knock it down to four.

I asked for a G&T and was offered a suggestion of Portobello Road gin. Always nice when the staff don't just instantly give you Gordons! They had a small but good selection of spirits. Prices were what you would expect for the area and for good quality drinks- about £6.50 for a double g&t though I expect bombay sapphire would be cheaper. The food looked good but I didn't eat so couldn't comment. There's lots of outdoor seating so it would be a lovely place to go in the summer.
