A little expensive, but we had a great time feeding butterflies and checking out the fish! We will definitely be back!

This is a very small attraction, not quite what I expected after visiting several different butterfly conservatories. The price is the same as the very large places we've been, that might be why my expectations were high! The aquarium is an odd accompaniment to the butterflies and it definitely shows. It's very small with very little variety. The kiddos all loved that you could appear to be in a fish tank but there wasn't much to capture adults attention. The touch tank was all netted off so that left nothing much to do! The butterflies were nice but there didn't seem to really be that many in the house and only a few varieties. Standing in line to get in was one thing but then having to stand in line to leave felt a little claustrophobic!! The staff was not friendly, welcoming or available to interact with, most seemed a bit bored. The fake flowers and nectar seems like a great idea but unfortunately not many folks were having any luck! All in all, it's a nice little attraction to spend an hour or so! read more

Literally, nothing to see there. Smallest aquarium in the world. Don't waist your time and money.

Just under $30 for myself, my 4-year old, and one feeder. The buttterfly house was definitely super cool. The aquarium was underwhelming but still had some pretty cool marine species for a small place. Overall, I think the butterfly house was worth it in itself. My child thought it was the most amazing thing ever and had the biggest smile. read more

This place was much more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. My college-bound daughter and I really enjoyed it and were very surprised how how many butterflies and how many species they had. I'd been to one other such facility long ago and this place was 10 times better in terms of quantity diversity et al. I give only 4 stars because it nonetheless felt over-priced. Also, they prevent you from leaving until an attendant comes to usher you to a middle chamber and check for escapee butterfflies - we had to wait a long time. They should allow customers to depart with less waiting. As for other's complaints here about the "no bags" entrance requirement.. regardless how preposterous you find that, put yourself in their shoes. Me, I'm giving Butterfly House the benefit of the doubt that they have found that as a necessity to protect their butterflies and business. read more

Although some reviews state that this is over priced, we must remember that the cost goes towards helping keep the place running. As far as not being allowed purses or backpacks, it makes sense to keep things out of the butterfly enclosure that could allow a butterfly to escape. Our kids enjoyed visiting and the next time we come out to South Dakota we will have to visit again. read more

This was way too overpriced for experience that took maybe an hour at the very most and was very underwhelming. The playground area over by this is free and my 2 and 3 year old had way more fun playing than in the aquarium/butterfly house. We also paid extra for butterfly feeders which did not attract the butterflies at all...hate to say it but save your money. read more

This little aquarium and butterfly house was one of my daughters favorites from our travels to SD. It's a little pricy but seems they really care for the animals and treat them with respect and care. Loved all the turtles, quail and of course the butterflies! Worth a stop. read more

They won't let you wear your hat in because some "adults" were trying to use their caps as butterfly nets. They should've just beat their ass and fined them. Researching things to do in Sioux Falls, the Butterfly House and Aquarium came up on several different lists. One afternoon we finally went. I was a bit frustrated when we were unable to take out backpack in with things we didn't want to leave in the car while women with large purses were able to carry those in. No lockers were offered, and an unsupervised wall was available with knobs to hang things on was available. Why would you want to have that risk of someone's stuff possibly getting stolen? When you first enter, you go through the aquarium portion of the facility. Instructions are not clear on that, but it was easy enough to figure out. The exhibits where someone could touch starfish was really cool, but there was no station to wash hands prior and after. You had to leave the area to go into the restroom for hand washing. Has anyone here played Animal Crossing New Horizons? Well walking through the rest of the aquarium space, all I could think of was the museum! (see link below for a TikTok I made that summarizes!) The next area was my favorite - the butterfly house. There were so many types and colors. It was truly like the Animal Crossing Museum butterfly area. For a small price, you can get a flet flower and one of the workers will spray it with a little bit of pollen to attract butterflies. I spent a good hour just looking at them all. As you'd expect, there are butterflies, as well as fish-like creatures in the aquarium. As you might not expect, it's smaller than you might think, but it's quite good. As you might not expect, some turtles might be blocking your way on the walking path or wandering around, doing things that turtles do. (What do they do, anyway?) You've been warned. They may be up to no good. Or maybe just chilling out, wondering what in the heck all these stupid reviewers are doing. Or possibly doing nothing in the face of futility. Back to the aquarium part, you can touch some of the sea cucumbers or starfish. I wasn't feeling that urge and passed. Back to the butterflies, the butterflies fly around or sit still and that's about it. They're fun to watch. I suppose that you're supposed to learn stuff while you're here, but I didn't really bother to do that. I'm too serious for trivia and I just wanna take stupid pictures and write even worse captions or reviews and enjoy life. I'd make a horrible 10 year old, so thank goodness I'm not that. Found this place on yelp while looking for something to do in the area. We were not happy about the $22 price tag (that's for seniors) but ok, I like butterflies. Well guess what? I cant bring my purse in!? What? Why not? I promise I wont steal anything! Im 65 years old, I have no desire to shoplift. One of the butterflies might get in it. What? Seriously? If its closed will the butterfly unzip it and crawl inside while going unnoticed by me as the bag is hanging on my shoulder? If that's the case, these are some damn smart butterflies and you should charge more. Also you should treat them better if they are that crazy to get away! My husband says, so she cant bring her purse in? Worker says not the bag portion. You can bring in what's in it. Again, SERIOUSLY? Im not comfortable leaving my purse in the car, especially with several people knowing its there. Its not that I have millions in it. I don't want my car broken into resulting in who knows what repairs. Not to mention loss of my drivers license, credit cards, etc. Car window replacement $500, car door repair $1000, time to replace drivers license, credit cards, identity theft issues $20,000. The Butterfly House and Aquarium is a lot of fun! I think it is especially a fun place to bring children to, but it's fun for adults as well. (We did NOT bring any children with us!) The "cove" is a very fun room, where you can touch different aquatic animals (gently), and we saw big stingrays. There are also various, smaller aquariums to look at that include fish from different types of areas. (One was a caribbean coral reef exhibit, for example.) These were very interesting! I could sit and watch shrimp all day, and I spend quite a bit of time watching the star fish and other creatures that you can pet. After that is the butterfly room! But it is that and so much more. They have a huge variety of butterflies in this room. There are also turtles, and some kind of small birds, a grouse maybe? They are so cute, but I wasn't able to get a photo of them. There is just so much to see in here, that I could have spent hours in there. I highly recommend taking a trip to see all the fun at the Butterfly House and Aquarium! read more

HORRIBLE experience and WILL NOT be back!!! Was singled out and not allowed to go into the facility with my 2 young children because my purse was too big. However, 2 ladies in line near me had the same size size purse and were allowed to go in and a lady behind me had a small backpack that was bigger than my purse that was also allowed to go in...Not sure why all guests are not treated the same and why I was singled out, discriminated against, and not allowed to enter the facility. Both the man who worked at the admission counter and the Supervisor on duty were extremely rude to both me and my kids. Don't go here!!! They are awful!!! read more

Loved the butterflies. We did not bring in purses but had to leave our hat. They could use some serious donations to install locked lockers so people don't complain about purses or worry about theft- please donate to help. A bit pricy but understandable. Loved every part, especially the butterfly section, on hands sea star section. Would have liked a better on hands play area for kids to learn more at the end - maybe a paper, glue, cut, color or something intriguing to little hands about butterflies. Kids did enjoy it. This is an enjoyable place to visit. It is a little bit small, but still clean and there is plenty to see. My family and I really enjoyed the aquarium part especially. The negatives I would say are the fact that it is on the small side (probably about 30 minutes worth of time there), so I think the tickets are probably a few dollars more expensive than they should be. The other thing was that the staff at the front seemed to be really stressed out, sort of barking orders at everyone to take off their coats and zip up their bags. It also would be a place that isn't super accessible for those with handicaps. There are no strollers allowed, and while their signs stated that they would make exceptions for those with handicaps, it seems like it would be difficult to maneuver a wheelchair through the facility to be able to enjoy it fully. My friend moved to Sioux Falls, so I took a road trip to visit her, and she brought me to all the touristy places. I enjoyed this place. I think it cost $8.50 when I went, which is a bit expensive but whatever. I mean you can spend that much on a lunch out or you can go look at pretty butterflies. Once we got past the overly-excited woman talking to us like we were five years old and telling us how to behave, it was a pleasant place to spend some time. Also, the look of shock on the lady's face when my friend said that Sioux Falls was kinda small was priceless. There's a window with a bunch of chrysalises, and when we were looking at it a butterfly popped out of one, which was kinda cool. I had certainly never seen that before. It's a small room that has plants and flowers and a little pond, and a lot of butterflies. It was fun trying to get them to land on us and trying to snap pictures. Butterflies are not particularly cooperative with photos, so I had to take a lot of pictures to get some good shots. There were definitely some dead butterflies in there as well and some with really damaged wings probably from the wire on the ceiling. It was fun and pretty for the most part, and it was a fun outing on a Sunday afternoon. read more

It was a well ran and clean aquarium and butterfly house but very small. The aquarium is one room and about a dozen tanks. They did not abide by federal law for people with disabilities. So if you have a disability do not expect them to allow you the access required by law. I would not go back. read more

Stopped in here with the kiddos a couple of years back and it was phenomenal. Imagine walking some short paths in an indoor garden and to be able to feast your eyes on butterflies, butterflies, and more butterflies of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Our children were amazed, and we were, too. The various types of butterflies would fly and some would come to rest on you. It was truly thrilling to see so many butterflies of so many types. In addition to the butterfly house, there's also a marine cove (a very small aquarium-like attraction) where you can encounter some stingrays and sharks and unique fish. There's also a gift store. The Sertoma Butterfly house is kind of a neat oddity for a place like Sioux Falls. It's a pleasant little enclosed area with vegetation and a whole bunch of butterflies. Seriously, a ton. Chances are at least one will land on you at some point, so if that's a problem for you, you will probably want to skip it. Otherwise, the butterflies are quite beautiful and the whole experience is pretty unique. The people employed there all seemed knowledgeable and friendly. You are probably wondering why I gave it a 2-star rating at this point. Well, it does have some pretty severe limitations. It really isn't that large of a space. It takes you about five minutes to walk through the place, and that includes stopping to take pictures and look at landed butterflies. Unless you bring a book to just hang out for a while, you probably don't need to spend more than fifteen or twenty minutes total. And now we come the the main reason for the low review: the cost. I have no clue how much it costs to keep something like this up, so the $6.00 per adult fee may be completely necessary. However, it is in no way worth that much to me, for such a limited amount of enjoyment available. I can only recommend it if you can somehow get a substantially reduced entry fee . Otherwise, I would say that it just isn't worth the money. read more

This is a great place to bring kids to show them so many butterfly's from around the world to get up close and personal. They fly all around you and ma even land on you. For photographers they open early one Saturday a month so ONLY photographers can go in early to take some amazing photos! read more

Pretty cool place for Sioux Falls!! We stopped in as we had some time to kill on a Saturday afternoon. Place is pretty small and not much in terms of display. The marine cove has about 5 displays - including one where you can walk up and touch stingrays and baby sharks. And one of the bigger displays has a bubble that kinda puts you in the middle of the fish tank. The butterfly/quail display is awesome! Many different kinds of butterflies in here! read more

This place is amazing. It's by far the coolest thing to do in Sioux Falls for animal lovers. The aquarium has clown fish, a stone fish, seahorses, eels, a tidal touch tank with starfish, a shark touch tank, stingray touch tank, and a butterfly walk through enclosure. For the size of Sioux Falls, this place is awesome! Way better than the zoo, especially if you like marine animals. Check it out! read more

My sister, her children, and I stopped by to break up a long drive on I29. They have a cute little aquarium and you can touch sting-rays and sharks! This is the main attraction of the aquarium, otherwise the aquarium portion is fairly unimpressive. The butterfly house is pretty nice though! It was great going in there during the winter, a nice little mini-vacation from the bitter cold. They have a wide variety of butterflies - some are HUGE! They also have adorable little button quail that run around. The gift shop was also pretty darn cheap for a gift shop - usually places like this are super pricey. It made us want to buy all the things! My only complaint was that they had a yoga class in the butterfly house so we were pretty limited on where we could walk....I felt like the yoga class should be at a time when the public isn't walking through. tl;dr Great place for kids. Sertoma butterfly house is something everyone should do in Sioux Falls at least once. I've been there many times and enjoy each visit. My 2 year old loves seeing the aquarium part with all the fish and absolutely loves the butterflies. There is also a neat book room and learning room with jelly fish and other activities for a little older kids. We got to see them feed the sharks one day which was really fun! I've taken parents, friends, and other relatives from out of town and they always have a great time. There are memberships which I'm pretty sure my parents got as they love taking the grandkids year round! read more

The Sertoma Butterfly House is about so much more than butterflies. It's a place that enlightens and excites you. Add the new Purdy Cove and aquarium display, it becomes a place that will enchant you. If you take the time to really look at all there is to see, and the time to ask a few questions, there is also education. Not one of my questions went unanswered. If the volunteer did not know she found out to satisfy my curiosity. The day I vistited there were over 800 exotic butterflies from all over the world. When I learned about their life cycle and how short it was, I was awed. It is amazing how much the acomplish in so little time. I never thought about anything other than their beauty until that visit. But now I know how truely we need them in the world. I am now inspired to connect more fully to the nature we are all a part of. It's Sioux Falls' greatest gem! CW read more

My family went to the Butterfly House right around the time it just opened, back then it was just butterflies. We went back this summer and the Purdy Marine Cove was done. It really added to the whole experience, there were a bunch of large aquariums with vibrantly colored tropical fish, sea horses, anemones, starfish, eel, and my son's favorite, the shark! With the dazzling butterlies to go along with it, it was a really amazing experience. My daughter and I even got a butterfly to land on us, which was super cool. Even though admission seemed a little high to us at first (like at $8.50 for an adult) and there were a couple of rules that were tempting to break (like not catching the butterlies) by the time we were ready to leave, it really felt like we got our money's worth. We're definately going to make this one of our yearly vacation destinations. read more
