Tax prep for deceased…read morerelative turned into a several-month long battle, with the IRS returning the paperwork to us, stating there were multiple issues, errors, and ommisions. The preparer stated she had never done a return for the Dearly Departed, so she MAY have to look up some things. We paid a bill of $274.00 for these services. After receiving the return back, we called JH to have someone who DID KNOW how to do this meet us the following day, in order to get this corrected, and close out the deceased affairs. The preparer stated she would "Call the Boss" and call us back. Three & 1/2 days later- no call back. Already nervous at the sheer number of IRS mark-ups, I called a REAL Tax Preparer, and was informed what SHOULD have been done the first time. We completed the numerous missed and incorrect steps, and sent it back ourselves. I then filed a complaint with JH Corporate. After sending a copy of the IRS mark-ups, the Franchise Owner's rep called me back, and stated they did nothing wrong, that every deceased filer's return gets sent back for the missing forms. (Not even close to being true) So after paying for what was supposed to be professional Prep, we ended up doing it ourselves, paying a REAL Tax Preparer to navagate thru the errors and incompetence, and being told everything was OUR fault. I asked why no one ever called us back, in order to get this mess fixed in the first place? The smug reply was: "WEll, I guess I'll have to talk to her about that" If you value your time, sanity, and your hard-earned money, DO NOT go near these folks. If there's any issues, it will be YOUR FAULT! (Even when its not)

Update: i have received three letters regarding errors or misunderstandings in our taxes. It is now august and we continue to sort this out. I wish we could give negative stars!!!! Even the response from the owner continues to outline unprofessionalism and a lack of accountability. How does one argue about letters from the IRS regarding errors in the filing of the tax preparation and continue to point fingers at the client? Always taking it personal and ignoring any business acumen.

The employee comes up with an excuse that it will take longer and I need to reschedule for another day. Keep in mind there was less preparation this current tax period than the one before. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! H&R Block makes their money by raking up extra time on your tax preparation! CLIENTS BEWARE!!!! Corporate will also be advised of this mistreatment of their customers!
