On a lovely day trip from NYC to Nyack I had a very unfortunate experience at the Maria Luisa boutique. As a retired person I enjoy visiting different towns and shops in these beautiful towns and will take photos and post on my Facebook page to inspire friends and family to visit these beautiful places and shops. As I browsed this store which at the time had 3 or 4 customers including myself and my friend, I took 4 photos - one of my friend and 3 photos of cute dish towels and coffee mugs with funny sayings on them, I didn't touch these items or rearrange them in any way. When we initially entered the store the sales women were very welcoming and friendly but all of a sudden the mood of one salesperson shifted dramatically. I was walking in a very narrow area and the employee who is an older woman with large framed eyeglasses came way too close to me (neither of us wearing face masks) and said in a stern, unfriendly tone of voice "can I help you?" I immediately felt uncomfortable because of her tone and too close physical proximity to me . I smiled and said no. Then, again in a stern tone of voice she said "any questions about anything?" Again I said no . Then, again with the same stern voice and close physical Proximity she said with the same tone " Any questions about anything you are taking photos of?" In an irritated tone of voice she said next time ask to take photos and looking down at the phone in my Hand she ordered me to "and turn off your camera" I was speechless and never experienced any treatment like this before in any store or establishment . If she said in a neutral tone or dare I say friendly tone of voice - we have a no photo without permission policy or I'm sorry but please no photos - I would have apologized - I saw no signs posted in the store warning of this policy that was obviously very important to this person . On my way home, I found myself feeling very unsettled . This really ended my visit to the shops in Nyack on a very sour note! I decided that I would contact the manager or owner of Maria Luisa boutique to share my unpleasant encounter with their sales person. As I found their information on the internet I came to discover it was the store owner herself -Maria Luisa who treated me so poorly!! Needless to say , I will never return to this boutique! I have loved this store in all its varied locations. It's just great and really well curated.... nice clothes and jewelry and household things and books. I have been in quite a few funky little stores in many much more exciting places than Nyack, and this one holds up well against any of them. read more

This is a place to get lost in the magical power of color, texture, style and by Maria Whittingham's vision. It's a plethora of ethnic and comfort fashion. Fantastical and fashionable garments. Jewelry, furniture, candles, journals and more. Everything in this store appeals to me. You can get a gift for almost anyone at this fun boutique. The staff is upbeat and always helpful. Obviously a successful store, it has been in Nyack for 30 years. Maria, the owner, is altruistic and does so many good things for the community of Nyack and for the planet too. I have been a customer of Maria Luisa's for at least 25 years. Why do I go back again and again? Because Maria's boutique offers unique and stylish clothing, shoes, and accessories and because the staff here makes you feel welcomed and special. I get honest feedback on my choices and often get suggestions on items I wouldn't have considered. In addition, the store is a pretty store! There's lot to see, especially the fair trade items that Maria is proud to offer. It should be noted that Maria gives back to the community through fundraisers and community projects. Terrific store in beautiful Nyack! Many handcrafted items and everything is great quality. There's something for every woman here really, clothes, shoes, handbags, jewelry, and downstairs there is a great selection of furnishings. I bought one of my favorite lamps here. You will not find a friendlier shopkeeper of women's clothing and accessories in Nyack...or in all of Rockland County for that matter. The proprietress, Maria Whittingham, is in her own shop most days, and nights, and weekends. This woman doesn't sleep. She figured out Facebook selling long ago. I literally go nowhere else to shop for gifts for the women in my life: friends and my significant other. If you are a guy, get over to Maria Luisa's ASAP for Valentine's Day...and every other day. Maria Luisa is that rare local business offering quality with conscience. The shop carries items hand selected by the owner for uniqueness, quality and ethical sourcing. It is so rare that a shop like this can survive in competition with chain stores. At Maria Luisa, I can find stylish clothes, shoes, accessories, and other interesting items that I can't find elsewhere. And most importantly to me, the items are made without child labor, or environmental destruction, and sometimes are made by collectives of people in small villages worldwide, who give back to their communities. Nyack is a very SOHO place with a lot of great restaurants, antiques and trendy shops, great for gifting and special dates. My favorite is Maria Luisa, it carries a special line of clothing and great shoes. I always go back when i need that special outfit. Everyone is always warm and very helpful.
