I've tried three of their throwing classes and thought it was really affordable with their BIPOC fellowship prices. Though the studio is old, each class provides EVERYTHING you need to practice on the wheel - clay, tools, aprons, etc. You have to pay extra per piece you want to fire and we didn't get free reign with glazes and trimming (the instructors do it for you). But I didn't mind for the price, and it makes it easier for those who take the class to spend it entirely on honing in the art of throwing. Overall a great start for beginners who have always wanted to try ceramics! They really create a safe space for you to mess up and learn. Taught by experienced instructors, Byrdie's has reasonable membership prices as well! read more

You are reading this here first: Byrdies makes the best sandwich I've ever had. What's more? It's also the cheapest sandwich in New Orleans! The value is incredible (ie, I don't mean shitty American "cheese" and limp iceberg lettuce-cheap. I deserve better than that. *You* deserve better than that). Those tomatoes on there are probably heirloom and for greens, we're talking arugula. The specialty veg sandwich has an avocado spread that's out of this world divine delicious and the other day, I was introduced to the joys of buttermilk cheese sprinkled on top. They make their own *bread* for god's sake... If you don't like red onions or red pepper, Chris will gladly substitute you with something else. And whatever the ingredient, there's just the right amount of everything perfectly combined to make a sandwich into an edible piece of art. OK, so the price for this incredible sandwich that I still can't stop thinking about and have had to have twice in less than a week when I normally don't eat lunch out? FIVE FUCKING DOLLARS! Make that four with the Yelp Check-In offer. I shit you not. And yes, I'm cursing up a motherfuckingstorm because I feel like I've discovered something not many people know about (with the exception of Yelptern, Emily A, who introduced me to the joys of Byrdie's sandwiches just recently). And just so you know I mean business. I consider this place to be really off the grid when it comes to food. For the love of a good sandwich, stop in immediately and do yourself a favor with one of these incredible concoctions. See a fantastic art installation that a righteous feline might be guarding along the way... One other thing: I haven't tried it yet, but you should probably also know there's a homemade lavender bread with homemade strawberry jam, along with other pastries made in-house. She bakes her own onion herb bread daily. I repeat, SHE BAKES HER OWN BREAD DAILY!!!! So. Um, now that I got that out.... Byrdie's is a low-traffic, limited-seating coffee shop around the corner from my house with the same 4 or 5 people coming in EVERY DAY (Hint: I'm one of them). She stocks pastries from Shake Suggary that change up every week and serves drinks in mugs and pots that were made & fired in the attached pottery studio. ADORABLE. The drip coffee is a little weak but that's fine because the espresso is DIVINE and made with an AeroPress. Also, she's got that loose leaf tea. And she's hilarious and on Twitter as @nolabyrdie. If I could harvest every awkward scenario, inappropriate comment, or genius idea manifested in Byrdie's I could be rich. But I'll just keep it to myself. They serve coffee and pastries too, but don't expect them to make you a carmel-frappa-mocha-swirla-shake-and-bake-a-chino. The prices are low so you can write that screenplay you've been working on without having to borrow more money from your parents. They are open a lot more than Yelp says -- often in the late morning & noon because it's open whenever someone is working in the studio. I got a pair of beautiful matching cup and bowl set. Everything is unique, handmade, and affordable (average 15-35 per item), with a wide selection of ceramic mugs, bowls, and even some planters. So cool that they are a nonprofit studio so they can make pottery classes accessible! read more

This place is the anti-Orange Couch. Byrdie's is kind of like a secret coffee shop. Walking inside, some people probably walk right back out the door. You enter into a large gallery area and there is no sign of coffee anywhere to be found. You have to have faith! Keep walking! Then the coffee bar appears on your right. They serve only the most basic of coffee house drinks: drip, iced coffee, espresso, latte, cappuccino, and some tea. The look is very bohemian, very DIY. But not in a crusty Zot'z way (thank god). I'm sipping on a large drip right now for two bucks. They use locally roasted beans from Orleans Coffee Exchange and it shows. Delicious! There is a surprising amount of seating too and this review is a testament to the functioning wifi. The password is painted on the wall above the condiment bar too. The only problem is the hours! Opens at 10 AM? What the hell! I need caffeine several hours before that. They're located very close to the soon-to-open NOLA Food Co-Op, so I have a sneaking suspicion that will drive more business to Byrdie's and in turn extend their hours. read more

This is a cute multi-purpose space that's been divided into several things: gallery, pottery making, and cafe. They always have good and interesting art hanging around at reasonable prices. I've never taken a pottery class here, so I can't comment on the quality of the classes. A look around the studio does show that you will have all the tools you need to make what ever pottery you want. And some of the displayed student art is beautiful. I LOVE the sandwiches here. They make their own bread daily. Today, I had the delicious grilled cheese with pesto and tomato. I had it with an Italian soda. They use the Soda Stream machine. I've never had club soda from one of those machines before, and I find it to be less fizzy than fro a soda fountain. I love their iced coffees and hot brewed coffees. I am not as much of a fan of the coffees that require steamed milk because they heat it up in a microwave instead. The temperature just isn't right. Protip: Come here to study. its got the right amount of noise, cheap and good food, and lots of coffee to keep you going. read more

Byrdie's is a great quiet coffee/tea shop. It's also an Art Gallery, which in conjunction with the St. Claude Arts District it has a new exposition every month. On top of all this there is a ceramics studio in the back that is open to ceramics artist for a monthly fee. The coffee and tea are cheap and most are fair trade and organic. There are also fresh daily baked vegan pastries from a local Bywater resident for $2!. The only fault is that the shop can be sometimes deserted, but look no further than the friendly owner Heather to chat you up! It's also a great place to get coffee and concentrate amongst the St. Claude rustle. read more

With mismatched furniture, a record player gently wafting WWOZ into the room, and friendly baristas, Byrdie's is a good place to come for a quiet moment. While visiting NOLA I found myself walking around and in need of tea. I went here based off yelp reviews and enjoyed a very cheap and authentic cup of loose leaf chai. The owner told me about upcoming exhibits and was super friendly. This place is not to feel your need for a starbucks, dunkin donuts, panera, etc... type of coffee. This is a sweet little local coffee shop owned by a very sweet little lady who keeps it simple and obviously loves what she is doing. There's a very "neighborhood" feel, and it seemed to me that most people were regulars who may hang out there every day. I stopped in with my family after an event at the Shadowbox Theatre, and we were immediately made to feel at home. The coffees we got were great and just what we needed. I pet the kitteh while Ky checked out the awesome photographic art in the adjacent/entry area. WOW! Byrdies is my favorite place in New Orleans to get work done and spend the day. I have never experienced such a homey, conducive work environment. I've taken pottery classes for the last few months at Byrdie's, and I've learned so much. Heather is incredibly friendly and rushes to the aid of any potter in distress. She instructs in a super accessible way, demonstrates everything, and is so encouraging. After never having taken a pottery class, I enrolled in the beginner class, and continued to the intermediate- showing Heather's ability to turn non-potters into successful cylinder and bowl makers. For less than $200, you get 18 hours of class, all the clay you need (not rationed), and access to a wheel and tools. Love it here! Oh, and she has vegan treats. read more

My wife and I walked almost two miles to come here based on yelp reviews. We were a little sketched out by the neighborhood, but we continued on our path. We both had red pepper paninis and some iced coffee. The service was friendly and reasonably fast given that the paninis are made to order. The food was very good! Just as we were finishing up, they pulled some brown sugar and cinnamon bread out of the oven. $2 might seem pricy for a slice of bread, but it was worth every penny! Warm, sweet, and perfectly moist, it was a nice and unexpected treat. If I lived here this place would replace my Subway addiction. The food is fresh and clean and reasonably priced.
