I was here for an hour on a peaceful Sunday morning, just about the only patron. So it was quiet and reflective. I particularly enjoyed the "Jacqueline Kennedy" by Andy Warhol (1965) screenprint. This museum might look…read moresmall, but it is jam-packed with Art that challenges, that makes you ask questions, that inspires. Bonus: the price of admission is FREE so you can visit as often as you want. My favorite exhibit hosted by The Rourke in recent years was TransNodak, which was "a photo series about twelve local trans people living in/from North Dakota." The gallery talk with the artist was both moving and educational. My favorite piece from the permanent collection is a sculpture called "Cream Puff with Frogs." It is exactly what it sounds like, and I never pass by it without pausing to smile. Weather-permitting, don't miss the sculptures on the patio to the West and the pollinator gardens to the East! Across the street, between M&H and Ace Hardware, is a small area called the Sticks Garden, which features pillar sculptures by local artists as well as beautiful flowers in the summer. They have meditation cushions available for everyone. Which is great and everyone is helpful when it comes to finding the right way to sit. I visited the Hjemkomst Center recently to browse and see what they had to offer, including the…read moregift shop. After looking around, I sat down quietly with my laptop to get some work done in a calm space. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. A male employee working near the gift shop made comments and remarks about me being there, as if I didn't belong or wasn't supposed to look around. His behavior made me feel unwelcome in a place that should be open and inviting to everyone. I also emailed leadership afterward to share what happened, but I never received a response. That lack of acknowledgment made the situation feel even worse, as it suggested that concerns from visitors may not be taken seriously. The center itself has a lot to offer, but staff should treat all visitors with respect. My experience made it seem like certain people aren't equally welcomed, and I truly hope this is addressed so others don't feel the same way.

Their vibe is so incredibly unique from other places, if you walked in there you'd immediately get it. It's not your typical rough and tumble, almost intimidating tattoo place but it's a lot more low key, and I guess spiritual? is how I'd say. Another cool thing, it's female owned and all of the tattoo artists and the piercer are women. Girl power!! Steph is my lady, and she is SO TALENTED. Just saying that she is an unbelievably skilled artist is only putting it lightly and not giving her the justice she deserves. She is truly in the right industry. She's also just so nice and down to earth so you feel very comfortable from the get go. Steph's section of the shop has a ton of her watercolor paintings hung up, and I usually just stare in awe at those most of my appointments because they're awesome. Most of the artists have their own art hung up all around the shop which is super cool in my opinion. Just take a look at some of the work Steph's done on me, and you should see just what I'm saying. When she worked on the gems on my arm, she used this special technology to make the gems black and white outlines, and she said she looks at them a specific way, in which she's been trained, in order to bring them to life. It was just so fascinating to me and I know I can trust her with anything. She's done half of my tattoos and I'll keep going to her as long as I am able or anytime I'm in town. She's great at designing ink as well. I had an idea for a tattoo I really wanted but wasn't quite sure how to make it all come together. I told her what I was thinking and she helped turn it into an amazing tat that I get tons of compliments on. I really can't say enough good things about Steph and all the rest of the gals at Bee's Nest. If the other women aren't tattooing they'll come say hi during my appointments a lot and chat and they are all just so sweet and welcoming. I love this place!
