Do not use American Family Insurance. They are incompetent. I sent messages for 2 years to switch…read moremy account from AZ to WA. They did not. Than when i got a new car. I tried to get it switched to my new car. No one could ever help me. Even though their sole job is to get people insurance no one knew how to do it. After several phone calls, when it was finally done. They closed my account. Never sent me a bill. Which made it so I could access nothing online. I sent a payment through my bank as I had their information on file. I sent 250.00, I only owed 139.28. They said they never got it. Told me to wait longer to see if it goes through. She refused to look for my payment. It was already sent three weeks at this point. So they sent me to collections. When i called again. They stated they sent the payment back to me a month ago, which i never received. I asked them to void it and keep it. They of course cant do that. So I asked for an extension as the due date is in 3 days. Plus i wanted to see if I would even get my money back since they supposedly already sent it once. They said no they closed my account so they cant give me an extension or payment plan. These people are the most incompetent people I have ever dealt with in my life. Save your money and your time.

I recently called to cancel my auto insurance with American Family Insurance. I found another…read moreinsurance that offered around 5 times more coverage at half the price. I called the office to cancel my plan, but nobody answered. I left a message with my phone number and did not receive a response. A week later, after not being responded to, I called again. There was no answer, so I left a similar message, along with my phone number. Again, no response. I called a third time and was able to reach the receptionist. I explained that I would need to cancel my policy as I already purchased another. I was then connected to the agent. I understand that businesses hate to lose customers, but there are some things that should not be said to the customer. As I talked to the agent, he asked which insurance agency I was switching to. I told him again that I was not trying to get a lower rate with his agency; I simply needed to cancel. He asked again, so I told him. He said that the quoted price that American Family offered was for auto, personal, and property. This came as a surprise as I neither requested nor wanted this coverage. He continued talking about what American Family had to offer, and was not interested in listening. This went on for a few more minutes, as we compared the coverage options that they offered to what I already had. Everything he offered was of lower quality than what I currently have. After all of this, he explained that he thought it would be nice if he included this coverage, as a family member just switched their coverage plan to this. I'm not sure how that works, but it is similar to me going to McDonalds and ordering a small drink, and receiving a Big Mac meal and 3 ice cream cones, and then expecting me to take it. This is a horrible business model, but the agent thought that this would be fine. He asked me what auto insurance I was switching to, and I told him. He then said, "I don't want to bash them, but they have the lowest rating of customer service, and they've had that for a long time. Good luck though, just try to exercise extreme caution." I didn't mean to hurt his feelings, but I guess it was too much to ask for professionalism. As for customer service, My former policy was under another name. I called numerous times to get the information changed, but it was too complicated to ever get fixed. As for the messages I left, the agent explained to me that they couldn't understand the number I left in the messages. I would buy that if that is the first communication we had, but it was not. They called me on that number 2 weeks prior, and they had it in their system. He said that he called a family member to get my number, but that was not the case. After this debacle, I asked what I had to do to cancel the policies that I no longer needed. He said I could email him, and I said that would be fantastic. There was a pause on the phone, and he said, rather sarcastically, "soooo, do you want the email or not?" I responded in the affirmative, and he proceeded to tell me. I thanked him and was then promptly cut off by him hanging up the phone. The rates were always higher with this agency and customer service was abysmal. I am very fortunate I never had a claim, as I fear it would've been a nightmare to deal with these people. As for my new insurance, I couldn't be happier. The process was quick, easy, affordable, and helpful. If you or a friend or family member are thinking about switching to American Family, I would, as the agent so eloquently put it, exercise extreme caution and stay away.
