So, I've been taking photos since back in the film days and have taken a course or two over the years. This year, I was privileged to win the C1M photo contest, the prize of which was a six week class "Beyond the Basics". Wow - did I learn a lot! In each of the six classes, I learned something new or solidified something I already knew. I think that if you're interested in improving your photography, it's really important to have the structure of a class and to work with other photographers. I knew about elements and principals of design before, but when I'd go to take pictures, I'd sometimes find myself rushing and not really stopping to think it all through. The course made me much more intentional, and I think my photos definitely benefited from that. I'd taken an adult ed course before, and a few Craftsy classes on my own, but Walter's course was much better for the time investment and having the teacher - and other students - right there. read more

I wanted something more than a rushed hundred-dollar headshot from a department store studio. After looking at the excellent work showcased on Walter's website, I just felt an overwhelming confidence that I was going to walk away from C1M with a great product. I don't like to be the center of attention, and I also don't always like how my pictures come out, so I was concerned that I'd be uncomfortable during my headshot session. Walter put those concerns to rest. The all around experience from start to finish was excellent. Walter has a knack for teaching the skills needed for taking amazing photographs. I came into his class as an amateur - snapping shots in automatic and having to delete 3/4 of the pictures because they were terrible. Now, after just taking the basics class, I take the time to understand the goal of my photo and adjust the shutter speed, ISO and aperture (in manual mode) for the environment and now my photos have depth, character and look almost professional. I think the thing I appreciated most about having my headshot taken by Walter was the initial consultation where we met and he took the time to talk to me about what I wanted my headshot to do for me. I purchased a digital camera 2 years ago and realized I needed to take a class to learn how to use it. I took a class in Manchester that did not ift the bill but this year i found C!M and took the basic class. I learned more in the first day than the entire week at the other class. I don't photograph well, typically. My experience in the past has been with photographers who just say "smile" and then take the picture. Walter interviewed me before he took my picture, figuring out what I wanted and what the picture was for, and what a difference.
