Glad I didn't pay too much attention to the very old reviews of Ca de Vin on Yelp. We had a reservation, changed it then cancelled it because we didn't think I would be able to walk that far for dinner. Then on our last day we were sitting trying to figure out lunch and looked up and there was Ca de Vin....a sign. We walked down the little lane and there it was. It was slammed. We were second in line and finally saw another table free up. We were seated and the friendliest server arrived. We ordered a lemon, lime, bitter and looked over the menu. It was almost 2:00OM and knew we had dinner at 6:00 so we ordered appetizers. Fried Zucchini Fritters with zucchini, fresh herbs, feta, mozzarella and tzatziki & Spetsifai - Spicy Greek Sausage with a Napoli sauce, capsicum, feta and served with pita. Both were very good. However, the fritters could have been about a third of the size of one so there was more crunch. They got a bit soggy over time. The Greek sausage had a great taste but some of the larger end pieces could have been sliced a bit thinner so they would have a little char like some of the thinner slices. Don't get me wrong, the tastes were great just not at the top of the rating chart. Would definitely order each of these again. There were lots of pizzas being served and they looked wonderful. Will try one next time. Will definitely return. Service was great and they were so very busy. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommend. Make a reservation. read more

I had a beautiful experience at CaDeVin. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and staff are super friendly. The food was excellent; I particularly enjoyed the grilled kebabs and Roman margherita pizza. If you want something cute full of atmosphere, I recommend CaDeVin to anyone seeking a great meal with great service. I look forward to returning, as I visit this little hideaway frequently. You come here more for the ambience of the place (squashed in a cute little laneway next to the GPO building) more than for the food itself. We went as part of a work lunch, and they were easily able to accommodate all eight of us. The setting is nice -- somewhat dark, but in a rustic, cosy way, with very much of a pleasant indoor-outdoor feel. My coworkers got various pizzas and pastas. Unfortunately, nothing on the menu appeared to be vegan. I asked if they could make the vegetarian gnocchi vegan, and they said no. So I went with the raddichio salad with no cheese instead. Everyone enjoyed their meals well enough without being wowed by them. My raddichio salad was nice (with lots of sliced melon and oranges) and tasted light and healthy, but didn't seem worth the $14. I was hungry again two hours later. I think this is the kind of place to bring out-of-towners because it's cute, it's located right at the Bourke Street mall among all the great shopping, it has the Melbourne laneway charm (in a more upscale way than some laneways), and it has a relatively crowd-pleasing menu (provided you don't have any vegans in your crowd). It loses stars for me because the service wasn't great (both times I've been), it's a tad overpriced, and it doesn't have many vegan options at all. read more

I had walked pst this place a million times before I actually went there to eat because it's in the throughway behind the GPO. I am a big fan of the fact that you can see the kitchen and food prep area. Clean. I tried the margarita pizza and a seafood dish served in a pan with tomato and garlic sauce. Really, really good! We had dinner there for my daughter's birthday. We loved the pizza, it was very thin base and crusty, toppings were very tasty, our daughter loved this place because of their pizza. The steak was also very good and cooked to our request. The pasta was just average, it's a bit bland on the seasoning and was not warm when served to our table. I had mate over in Melbourne and we wanted to try something different, somewhere that we had never been before and italian sounded pretty good for dinner prior to drinks. Ca De Vin is nicely tucked in the GPO on Bourke Street next to Myer. The restaurant is in a laneway with tables just off the footpath and surrounded by brick walls. The staff were nice and the food was great as well. We had the Bruschetta with tomato, garlic and fresh basil as entree and 2 pizzas to share for the main - a Margherita and the Gamberi (Prawns, Spanish chorizo, provolone cheese, spinach garlic, chilli and citrus breadcrumbs). Hidden in an alley between H&M and Myers, this restaurant was fantastic, and was recommended to us by an employee of David Jones. We ate here for lunch on the second to last day of our Australia trip, after spending a week in Sydney, two days in Cairns, and two days at Fitzroy Island, and two days in Melbourne prior to finding this restaurant. THIS WAS OUR FAVORITE PLACE WE ATE IN AUSTRALIA. And we ate at many Italian restaurants during our trip. The best part is that this restaurant is also very affordable, and it's hidden alley location makes it seem a little adventurous. You definitely want to give this restaurant a try! I had the fish special of the day with fennel, it was tasty and thoroughly enjoyed however certainly not enough to totally satisfy so some sides or starters are needed. Was in the city and stopped in to refuel .Very quick and friendly service. It is located in a laneway so seating arrangements are quite snug. Started with olives,chorizo and bread, all was served warm and a decent size portion. Also had the Italian cured meat board for 2. Very happy with service, flavours and portion size. Perfect stop to rest and eat after shopping in the Bourke St area. Good choice of cafe food and good coffee. The pizza had a very thin crust similar to ones you find in Italy. I was impressed by the use of white tablecloths and napkins and quality cutlery for a restaurant of such modest cost. There is a funky atmosphere in this restaurant. It's location is conveniently and the food & drinks good too. I had the duck, which I thought was a very generous serving and my partner had the fettuccine with veal ragu. The duck was a little over which made it dry by the skin was crispy and flavoursome. After a flat out, big afternoon of shopping, a friend and I stopped to recharge with a coffee. Stumbled across Ca de Vin down the shaded alleyway and so happy to find out that they did make coffee. Got a decent flat white here- which came with a neat hazelnut shortbread biscotti on the side. Friend ordered the Flat bread with garlic & oregano- that appealed to her from the menu as well as a coffee. Bread was very crispy and crunchy with decent flavour. Need to come back here for a dinner- as they probably do this best in companionship with their wines. In a very cool area and can imagine it being bustling for nighttime. Had heaters around and European feels. Good to know they do make coffees if you need an emergency one like we did. read more

Pizza's are massive but so very good. Penne Pollo is delicious. Great atmosphere in a superb location.

At first, I was a little sceptical when we first entered, but that disappeared pretty quickly. The service is great and fast, never letting you sit and wait for anything. Sure, it wasn't a very busy night, but in my experience, that makes the waiters a bit comfy as well. I was hungry and ordered a Carne Pizza, expecting something much smaller than I got. It was very big, and very tasty! The restaurant as well is very cozy, squeezed in between H&M and Myers making it very intimate. That, however, makes it pretty bad if you're a larger group of people, so I'd recommend this for a night when it's just the two of you. read more

Just came here for dessert and coffee later in the evening. Heat lamps and candles add to cozy atmosphere. Tirimisu and creme brûlée were delicious. Rather small sought get a bit crowded during the day but for a nice evening it was perfect. read more

Really lovely location in an old alleyway at the edge of the GPO building. Very picturesque. Food is lovely, very generous serving sizes (we didn't finish our mains). This is without a doubt the best pizza I have ever had. Such a nice spot with quick and friendly service. Ever since I had my first Margherita here I crave it all the time! While it can be a bit noisy inside due to the space they've got, the outside area is lovely - they have heating on in winter! Can't recommend this place more, absolutely adore it. read more

It was hard to get the waitress attention to order, we never got asked how the service was and when we went to pay they wouldn't split the bill. I searched on the net and read the reviews before deciding to try Ca de Vin, we were a party of 6, the service at first was good until they got the starters mixed up with some other table. It appears that some of the staff know what they are doing and others just seam to bring it down, the same can be said for the food some dishes are good some very poor, the pizza that I have was poor and overpriced, mainly rocket leaves. Atmosphere and food were good. We had Pizza Jamon. Price with 24 AUD too expensive eventhough Pizza was good and big. Didn't like the service though and how management deals with complaints. We ordered for drink one red wine and Aperol Spritz. As it is an italian drink, an italian restaurant has to know what it is. I found Aperol on the drinking menu as an Aperativo which is as far as I know no "shot"! The price was with 9 bucks comparable to Italy or Europe in general. When I got the cheque, Aperol spritz costed 16 AUD! When I asked why, I was told that Aperol would be just the shot and I had to add the price of sparkling wine to the sum. The waiter left to ask the Manager who showed up. He was from Italy and admitted that Aperol is never a shot and u would never drink it without the sparkling wine. He further said, that Aperativo is no shot and that the menu is quite confusing?! Excuse me, pls! When u are the manager and know that it is confusing, why don't u change it or mention it when someone orders Aperol? Instead of correcting the bill, he apologized 3 times, but insisted on the amount. I really dislike the way how he dealt with this issue! Would be easy to take away 7 Bucks from the bill to hav a satisfied customer. Don't get me wrong: I don't care about 7 Bucks, but this it not ok for a good restaurant! Wonder down the lane way north of the GPO CA de Vin. Is a Mediterranean gem. Which leads you to some sweet sweet grilled meat.
