Why do people keep saying Melbourne is the food capital when I've been let down over and over again. Gradi was no exception. booking was for 6pm. Our order wasn't taken until 6.30. Food came out cold. The seafood linguine with crab meat and zucchini in a lobster bisque was quite bland. My dinner companion disliked their margherita which is meant to be the world's best. Took forever to grab the waiter's attention for the bill. You can't pay at the table expect to queue up to pay. 36 bucks for mediocre pasta. Over priced, poor service and not worth the wait. People around me appeared to be mostly drinking cocktails or having the antipasti. Pros Interesting cocktails Great ambience - definitely a date venue. Being a pizza Lover and reading that Grati won the best margherita pizza in the world I just had to try this place. I went over tonight and ordered the margherita pizza for take out. The menu said the price was $24 but I was chartged $26? Fee for take out??? Wow was I disappointed with the pizza because not only was the pizza not the worlds best but it was one of the worst I've eaten. The crust had the normal black char marks from a wood fired pizza but it was burnt and tasted burnt. The sauce reminded me of the line from the end of the movie Godfellas where he says the marinara sauce tastes like watered down ketchup. What's in a name? Brunswick's famous pizzeria (400 Gradi) has set up shop at Crown Casino, proving that the Gradi name can easily draw a big crowd, drawn to the award-winner Napoli-style pizza. I normally avoid Crown like the plague, but when dinner on Southbank was suggested I decided to give this one a go as I am yet to make it to the Brunswick site. The menu is huge. A wide selection of anti-pasto, pizza, pasta, Italian mains, cheese plates and desserts will see most people satisfied - including the gluten intolerant (no small feat for an Italian restaurant!). The pizzas are big and served as individual plates. If you're going to share, it's likely you'll need to do some awkward slice shuffling between your plates rather than going family-style. The Napoli style pizzas provide a super thin base and big woodfire-tinged crust. They are impossible to eat with your hands as they are very ingredient and cheese-heavy in the middle - the crust is the only stable/crisp part of the pizza and I wasn't really into them. My crust-loving other half devoured most of mine. They pick a few high quality, simple ingredients and aren't skimpy on them. I enjoyed my eggplant lasagne pizza and my friend's seafood one had a huge amount of big prawns and mussels piled high on hers. In this restaurant you can find original Italian food made with top quality ingredients. But as a bread and born Italian I think they are trying to be a bit too fancy in their style. Italian food comes in generous serves and not stylish decorations. To me the food here looks a bit like it has too much French style influence. Besides that, it is bloody expensive!!! (OK we are river side facing the CBD, but still...). Overall good, but there are other places in town serving comparable quality in more generous serves and cheaper. read more

We came for a late dinner on a Sunday night around 8pm. While it was packed, they were able to seat us immediately. The experience went downhill from there. The waitress seemed scatterbrained. She forgot to place the order for one of the salads, so it didn't arrive until after our main entrees. Our water was never refilled, she never came to check on us, and it was difficult to get her attention. It also took a very long time for her to bring us anything we requested (the bill, extra plates, more soda). I won't be back. While it has good food, the noisy atmosphere and service don't make it worth the price. Skip it or check out a different location. read more

Just like their sister restaurant 400 Gradi in Brunswick, the food is authentically Italian and sensationally delicious!! It's no wonder why their Margherita pizza won at the world pizza championships a few years ago, simple flavours done well. Gnocchi is soft and tasty. Dark choc pudding was melting with a white choc centre but tasted a bit too floury and needed more sweetness. Will try their tiramisu next time! read more

Gradi is the "commercial" version of Brunswick's 400 Gradi restaurant. Located in Crown Casino, this large restaurant is the predictable combination of an excellent pizzeria and a high-volume, cookie-cutter restaurant operation. The menu is robust, offering a selection of high quality antipasti and great pizza options. Plenty of wine and spirit options -- expected in such location and clientele. The food: the taste is there and the ingredients are excellent. However, by having such a large operation, there are inconsistencies in the way food is served. The pizza might arrive in just a few minutes, but it might be a bit cold. YMMV. The service: you can tell they really tried to keep it authentic by employing a largely (if not entirely) Italian crew, a nice touch. The sheer scale of the restaurant (and long operating hours) may lead to slightly careless, impersonal service from a tired waiter. Otherwise they seemed to be knowledgeable and attentive. Good option if you're visiting Melbourne and want to try a mass-scale version of Johnny Di Francesco's famous Margherita. Just remember: the real deal is in Brunswick. read more

Very disappointed. The service was all together good - our waitress was kind and attentive, and the food we ordered came out within 20 minutes. However, the quality of the food was deeply substandard. Our garlic focaccia was under seasoned and boring, the potatoes we ordered as a side were bland. Both of the pizzas were under seasoned, with VERY soggy bottoms. The four cheese pizza was especially underwhelming. The only saving grace was the gnocchi; amazing texture but again it was under seasoned. To top it off, we had to cue up pay a INCREDIBLY overpriced bill. We were also in a hurry so this wasn't a leisurely venture. The interior was aptly placed which is understandable considering this restaurant is in the crown casino complex. The location is most definitely convenient. For an Italian pizza restaurant though it's not amazing, probably just the best available in the building. The menu was on theme but we ordered simply, just a prosciutto pizza and napolitana pasta. Due to illness, I had just a couple bites of the pasta and what I tried was decent. My partner enjoyed his pizza although he did say he's definitely had better elsewhere. The staff were fairly attentive, except when you want to pay. We always get this, no idea why, I guess Australian restaurants just don't like to shove the cheque at you. The waiter tried to settle me with a majorly wonky fork that could've been at home in a Salvador Dali painting but after pointing out their blunder, a new fork was brought out. Too bad I didn't end up using it much anyway baha. The one thing I disliked about this restaurant was the noise level. There were afew major party sized diners and boy, were they rowdy. I could tell the diners next to us disliked it too. I suppose the other diners don't matter if the restaurant can get their fair share out of the bigger party eh. Normally wouldn't been such a bother if I didn't feel so ill at the time. Either way doesn't encourage you to return if the restaurant can't control that type of behaviour. My platonic friend and I put in two cards on a $180 bill. Much to my disgust and embarrassment the waiter said " we dont split the bill". What !!! Three stars for the desserts, food is very average. I've been here several times since a friend recommended it and all three times the food has been very average except perhaps for the pizza. Last time I tried the calzone and it pays to carefully study the menu before ordering. The thing was fried whereas normally I have enjoyed it baked in a pizza oven.
