Historical venue honoring the Caddo Indians at the Caddo mounds. A reconstructed museum (torn down by a tornado) holds a museum depicting the life of Caddo there at the mounds. Clean restrooms, and nice gift shop. Besides the museum there's a 9 minute film about the Caddo Indians. A gravel foot path walking along the mounds. Plus there are 3 miles of trails. Be sure to stop by the garden. The grounds keeper greeted us today. He was friendly, and shared what knowledge he had, admitting he was covering for the regular person. Still, he knew a lot of details!

For anyone interested in Native American, Spanish or Texas history (or teaching younger generations about these histories), Caddo Mounds should not be missedI It's a little off the beaten path and it doesn't take long to visit so you might ask yourself, is it worth the trouble? To which I would resoundingly say "yes" - but be prepared to accept it for what it is: an authentic historical site dating back to 800 AD, presented with little fanfare and none of the glitz or glam of a big national or state park. This is not that; it is a site recognized by the US government for its national historic significance, loving maintained and restored after a deadly tornado by dedicated staff and numerous volunteers. The mounds are adjacent to another significant historial site, the Camino Real or "royal road" which dates back to the 1600s and was an important link for Spanish colonization of North American that stretched from Mexico City to northwestern Louisiana. Also, just a few miles away, is Mission Tejas State Park, site of one of the earliest Spanish missions (1716) in Texas. At the park, you can picnic and actually hike a part of the Camino Real, I'm told. My advice for anyone travelling long distances or with enough time is to pack a lunch and visit the mounds first and follow up with a picnic and hike at the park. A new visitor center is in the works at the mounds, the old one have been completely destroyed by the previously mentioned tornado, but in the meantime at the temporary visitor center, be sure to watch the short film about the culture of the original mound people and their descendants, the Caddo Indians, who were forcibly relocated to reservations in Oklahoma in in the late 1800s. The wide pathway around all three mounds can be easily walked, but a golf cart makes it even easier to get around. Viewing the mounds is completely self-directed, but signage at each mounds and the "borrow pit" explain the purpose and differences of each. Only after visiting did I realize what a special spot Caddo Mounds is and how much rich Native American history these three mounds embody. Having been born and raised just a short drive away, it only took me 62 years to get here! Shame on me!

The temporary visitor center has lots of great displays and the guide did a great job explaining things, once he finally paid attention to us! We walked in and started looking around (we had another couple wait in the car with their dogs) so we just wanted to ask a couple quick questions. But he took at least a full 5 minutes, maybe more, explaining purchase orders to the lady that was working there too. I couldn't decide if this was an urgent conversation (I don't think it was) but it definitely felt like he would rather talk to her than make us feel welcome. No one else was there at the moment so I'm pretty sure he could have greeted us and then gotten back to his lengthy explanation of po's! Once he was finally able to give us some attention, we were able to gather the information and get our questions answered. I look forward to coming back again when we have more time to spend.

The temporary visitor center will be used until the rebuilding of the original torn up by a hurricane in 2019 is complete.
