After a major foot operation, my dad could not walk without assistance. My mother couldn't lift him and without any in-home care, he needed to have a place to provide daily physical therapy, medical assistance and meals. Heritage Harbour Health & Rehabilitation Center is located near the Annapolis Mall and Riva Road, off in a secluded wooded area. It is very convenient. The rooms are shared with two people and a small curtain between the beds. The TVs are small and somewhat old. The TV channel is the Baltimore channel line-up which was difficult for my dad since he is an avid Washington sports fan. There is WIFI but it's not that reliable. The PT facility looked great. That's what it's all about. The therapists were very friendly and committed to getting everyone healthy. After my farther was sent home, they continued to visit his home and help with daily PT. Before we knew it, they arrived to pick up the wheel chair, walkers and everything else. Now my dad is walking about as good as new. Overall, my father never said anything bad about the place but was obviously happy to get home.

The facility is old and it shows but because my mother was completely unable to care for herself I was most concerned with her treatment from the staff. What I found (at least on her wing of the building) was a staff who kept her clean and comfortable and treated her with respect. There were a few things that needed my attention and I knew I needed to be there everyday for at least a while to keep an eye out. As I sat vigil in my dying mother's room I got compassionate concern, hugs, and even prayers from the women and men who tended to her. Her pain meds were always delivered on time. Before we put her here I saw the other reviews and was very scared for her but there was one positive review that I focused on that eased my mind. I hope if you are also worried this will help ease your mind. Thank you nurse Mary Lou and your team.

Some staff are wonderful and caring, but relative was not treated correctly, and despite everything said to them-they finally sent to hospital, finally! STAFF ARE TOO LOUD AND NO PATIENT CONTROL No noise control and no monitoring of patient whereabouts. Setting in urine and feces too long is not healthy, food iffy, some staff argue about hospital doctor orders for medication and had an attitude, "I'm going to check" was the response AFTER the argument, then the correct procedure was followed. No attention to reviewing patient medical and medication records, and first few days lack of attention and care except to put everyone in adult diapers and eventually change them. There are some good workers there, but... beware, someone must be there every day. THIS FACILITY MUST CONTROL LOUD NOISE, PATIENT NOISE FROM SHOUTING, TV, PHONES, AND STAFF who are too loud also. PATIENT RECOVERY DEPENDS UPON A QUIET and RESTFUL FACILITY-NOT DISTURBING NOISE. CAN'T SAY THIS ENOUGH.

Since then we have enjoyed not being owned by a house and not having to cook meals (which, by the way, are quite good and, at times, outstanding) while living a resort-lifestyle on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and making many new, close friends (both residents and staff). Many wait until a health-related item requires a move to a place where additional assistance is available. The problem with that is that they miss out on many of the benefits of a resort-lifestyle. While not planned for or anticipated when we moved, when the early stages of Alzheimer's started four years ago, we were so glad that we were living at BayWoods. I am now my wife's primary caregiver and living at BayWoods has eliminated many of the problems we would have had in a single-family home. Even with the advantages that are part of a community such as BayWoods, it is not possible for one person to fully meet the needs of a late-stage Alzheimer's patient and having the services of the BayWoods caregivers available gives me the time to take care of myself. VERY ANGRY about the way this place treated my Mom. Awful food. Indifferent (borderline dangerous)…read moremedical care. She was there for a week of post-surgical care after a knee replacement. She had been there two years before when she had the other knee replaced, and had a great experience. But the management there has changed. Here's the list of awfulness: 1. Food: (Mashed potatoes AND scalloped potatoes in one meal? A "reuben" sandwich made from 1 slice of meat on stale, hard bread? C'mon.) 2. Noise: They put her right next to the laundry room. They did laundry at 4 a.m., and the washing machines banged against the wall, keeping her awake. She requested they do laundry at a different time, and they did that for one day, then went back to doing it at 4 a.m. 3. They refused to stick to the plan of medications her orthopedic surgeon had prescribed. They changed medications and dosages, sometimes without even discussing it with her. When asked about it, they became defensive and said "we know better than the surgeons." 4. Apathy: it would often take hours to get anyone to respond to her simple requests. She was there six days, and asked multiple times for hangers so she could hang her clothes in the closet instead of having to bend over each time she needed an article of clothing from her suitcase. They never gave her the hangers. 5. Worst of all, after 6 days of this misery, she had had enough and wanted to be discharged. They told her she couldn't be discharged because she was anemic and needed a blood transfusion, and then sent her to the emergency room in an ambulance. Once at the ER, the doctors there told her she was NO WHERE NEAR anemic enough to need a blood transfusion, and told her she was fine. The ER docs said she should probably go back to Baywoods to finish out her week stay. They called Baywoods and Baywoods REFUSED to take her back, claiming she had left without being discharged. But THEY were the ones who told her she had to go to the hospital, because she was in grave danger from the anemia!!!! The ER docs said they see this at poorly-run facilities: if a patient questions the care they are being given, the staff tries to dump them on the emergency room just to get rid of them. There are other terrible things that happened to her during her stay there, but for the sake of my mother's dignity and privacy I am not going to describe them. DO NOT put your loved ones in the power of these awful people.

I didn't pay too much attention to her because I thought she just didn't like it there and wanted to be home but then I started seeing things a little too late. The first week she was fine but by the second week my mom and I saw a drastic decline in her health. The employees there weren't going into the bathroom with her like they should've to watch out for symptoms of C-Diff. She of course caught it but no one realized it until it was severe due to the fact no one was going to the bathroom with her. On another note with the bathroom she had to wait a long time to even get someone in the room to help her out of bed to the bathroom. By the 3rd week I saw she was dehydrated however they denied it and refused to call 911 to have her go to the ER. They wanted to take care of her themselves. The next day they called me saying they were calling. Really?! Even I could see she needed to go! Looking back I wish I had called myself. Also while she was being treated for C-Diff her occupational therapist came in the room while I was there and asked her if she wanted to go, or I should say tried to push her into going, to exercise. I could see she was weak and wouldn't be able to do anything. I would not recommend this place for your loved one. Do your research, listen to your loved one when they say something isn't right and trust your gut instinct. I have lots of regrets and hopefully this comment will help someone else out.

When we first arrived I found the place dark and depressing and smelling of urine, I immediately felt we made a mistake but my father said he would only be there 2 weeks he would deal with it. Having hip surgery a patient is suppose to be on a very mild dose of blood thinners for 7 days to prevent blood clots. Neither he nor our family realized that once he got to the rehab they misread the dosage and was overdosing him and they did not stop after the allotted 7 days. After a week of doing therapy he was becoming weak and had multiple bruising. When I questioned the doctor she stated that older people bruise easier and the therapist are constantly lifting him up holding his arms, forearms shoulders etc and that is causing the bruising, he is weak because he is going to therapy twice a day. It sounded plausible and you want to believe a doctor knows what they are doing. After 12 days my father was slurring his words was no longer getting out of bed and looked like one big bruise. He also kept rubbing his chest. When we called a family meeting and sat down with the doctor she was very agitated almost like we were bothering her with our concerns. she stated that the staff told her he wasn't sleeping at night and when you are older and don't get enough sleep slurring disorientation and other symptoms arise. He had been diagnosed the prior year with the beginning of COPD and she stated that his breathing was labored because he had COPD when I stated he has had it for over a year and why is he just know having trouble breathing and rubbing his chest she refused to address me and looked at my mother and told her she would order an inhaler for him. She also stated that she had already explained to us why he was bruising. We informed the doctor and staff that we would be removing him. This meeting was on a Wednesday or Thursday and we were told that he couldn't be discharged until they had set it up with Medicare to have a hospital bed and other items set up in our home to accommodate his disabilities. In addition my brother sat with the therapist to learn the different exercises he should be doing even though he was no longer receiving therapy at the center. The home coordinator told us it would be several business days and she was anticipating that he wouldn't be released until the middle of the following week. My mom who was 73 decided to stay nights because we were very concern about his rapid decline. Most of the staff made her stay very uncomfortable, they were not happy at all that someone was watching over them. Monday morning my mother called my brother and I and stated that the doctor came in and released him to go home and he needed to be out by 11:00 am since someone else would be moving into the room. I would like to point out that my father never received the inhaler. We got my father out of there and at home - No Medicare bed or anything was ever ordered when I called Medicare they had no idea what I was talking about. My father slept one night in his bed, the next day we took him to the hospital because he looked like he had suffered a heart attack he was grey, was having difficulty breathing and couldn't move. At the hospital it was determined that he had 2 fractured ribs, pneumonia, severely dehydrated and his blood work came back with extremely high doses of Coumadin (blood thinner) in his system. My father did not survive his ordeal. Do not send your loved one or even someone you dislike to this place. They are incompetent and are in it for the money and not the well being of the patient.
