I've seen other Fortis locations…read morelisted, but they have different addresses, so to be clear, this review is for the Fortis Institute located at 450 N Sam Houston Pkwy E, Ste 200, Houston, TX 77060. I attended this school for the Medical Assistant program to work toward becoming a CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant). At the beginning, my experience was okay and I didn't have many issues with my classes or instructors. However, as I got further into the program, my experience started to change. There were three staff members in particular that I had issues with. 1. Ms. Marin: I later found out that she would talk about me and my friends, and there were times when she would call us out in front of the entire class in a way that made us feel singled out or less than everyone else. I don't think students should be made to feel embarrassed in front of their classmates, especially by an instructor. 2. Ms. Nun: Whenever I had class with her, I felt like we barely learned anything. I specifically remember my friends and I asking if we could go through the skills list and practice different things to see what we still remembered and what we needed more help with. We were trying to make sure we were actually prepared, but our request was basically ignored and we barely practiced anything. 3. Ms. Moxcley: Toward the end of the program, we were told that we would receive assistance with finding employment. I remember reaching out to her multiple times about finding a job, but I would either receive no response or very little communication. Because I wasn't getting anywhere, I recently contacted Ms. Goss for help finding an MA position. I explained that I'm specifically interested in working as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN clinic. She told me she would call me. When she called, I happened to be busy and missed it, but I returned her call shortly afterward. She didn't answer, so I sent her a message letting her know I had called back and was available. This happened Tuesday. By Friday, I still had not received a response to any of the messages I sent afterward. I finally sent another message, and she responded saying she would call me "momentarily." I waited about two hours and still did not receive a call. That is what finally pushed me to leave this review. One of the things students are told is that Fortis will help them with employment after completing the program. In my experience, once you're finished with the school, getting that help has been extremely frustrating. Messages go unanswered, communication is inconsistent, and the employment assistance I was told I would receive has not been what I expected. I also don't understand the point of asking students what area they want to specialize in as an MA if the positions they are being directed toward aren't related to what they said they were interested in. I understand that nobody can guarantee you a specific job, but there is a difference between not being able to guarantee employment and simply not communicating with a former student who is actively asking for assistance. I completed my program and I'm genuinely trying to start my career and put my education to use. I'm not asking anyone to hand me a job. I'm asking for the career assistance and communication that we were told would be available to us. Unfortunately, my experience trying to receive that assistance has been extremely disappointing.

My wife got hoodwinked by SetFocus who claimed that their $20,000 13 week course was the equivalent…read moreof 2 years of training. At the time they claimed their job placement rate was 90%. After spending 13 weeks taking online classes 8 hours a day, and studying at night an additional 3 hours a night, my wife passed all the exams and was hired by a local company shortly after she completely her coursework. They fired her after 8 weeks saying that she wasn't fast enough, wasn't what they were looking for - prior to this my wife was considered one of the top programmers in St. Louis. (This was in 2008 when companies were either outsourcing to India, or downsizing). When we complained to SetFocus, they had their lawyers send us a 10 page threat so we backed off and ate the loss. We're not wealthy people - it was a significant financial loss. My wife was so demoralized she never returned to the IT field after that, and took a few low level administrative positions until she was old enough for social security.

They never said exactly what jobs were available nor do I think they even read my resume. The skills assessment test had nothing to do with technical skills. Do you need to know programming C#, Java, php, windows, linux, project management? NO! It was a bs test with GMAT type analytical questions. Thank goodness I was able to find other postings online for this place which warned me what this place was all about. Shame on you for preying on poor unemployed folks looking for a job. I wouldn't given this place a bad review, and I might have considered going here if they tell you up front they're a training school. Instead, they tell you you're interviewing for a job and making you jump through hoops, and then they tell you later your skills need to be updated and their training can get you there. This is entirely shady and how can I trust someplace if all they're doing is a BAIT AND SWITCH scam. Hopefully this review will help someone else looking for a job in case they want more info on this place.

There is no way to build things fully in that space. The things we did learn we only went over once so we barely remembered at graduation. We didn't cover all the things they advertise. We never did a month of plumbing, hvac, electrical. we touched on electrical lightly, we did carpentr and no hvac or plumbing. They had the whole group doing projects together so none of us ever got to complet anything ourselvea. I want to report the school for letting us sit in class Monday thru Friday for 7 months and leave without skills. we cannot read blueprints or know the actual names for tools nor can we make any estimates or anyhting because we werent taught. There is no curriculum in place, it's just what the teacher decides to touch on. This is not fair to the people who had to move things around in their lives to be able to attend school to change their lives. This is wrong and we feel cheated!!! I would never recommend this place to anybody for any subject

It was initially intended just for local 68 members, but in recent years has become available to the public. The entire school is completely ran and operated by guys who have/had years of experience in the field. All the instructors are awesome, and because of their experience, they're chock full of information; you could ask these guys anything and they'll have an answer for you. The classroom experience is a lot different than most schools, since the teachers work/worked in the field it's like talking to "one of the guys", which to me makes it easier to retain information. So far, I've completed about half the courses and have received my Blue Refrigeration license, next is my high pressure black stream license. It's a real "one of a kind" school.
