Café Bilderbuch is the apple of Schöneberg's eye when it comes to Gemütlichkeit (or coziness) but I'm afraid that the hype doesn't quite extend to its food. As the name of the restaurant suggests, the atmosphere is picturebook perfect: imagine that you've walked right into someone's antique living room/dining room/personal library hybrid (complete with comfy armchairs and bookcases) and you have Café Bilderbuch. But only come here for a meal on a slower day if you have time to kill because the service can be a little slower. One of the male servers is also a little brusque. The breakfast options are a little unimaginative, though they are very stereotypically German. Think bread, meat, cheese, and smoked salmon. I did like, however, how the menu was printed in a newspaper format and how each dish's name had a German fairy tale theme. I had Der Froschkönig, which consisted of smoked salmon, trout, eggs with caviar, olives, butter, bread, and a glass of orange juice for €8.90. It was nice that the orange juice was included, but I still felt like it wasn't very filling for what I paid -- it was basically a generous amount of smoked salmon, a single hardboiled egg, and a few pieces of fruit. But what's more disappointing is the fact that the restaurant is open until midnight, but the dinner menu is pretty much barren. There must've only been about five or six options when I went there for dinner last week. I had Omas Hühnersuppe -- it certainly hit the spot on such a cold winter's night but my grandma's chicken soup is packed to the brim with ingredients unlike Café Bilderbuch's version. It was, however, only €6.90 (which was actually cheaper than my breakfast!) but the dinner menu leaves a lot to be desired. While you might miss out on some of the live piano nights, I'd only recommend this place for brunch if you'd like to get a taste of a typical German breakfast and typical German customer service. read more

I sat down quite a few minutes after they were already open. There were maybe two other customers already there. It took over 10 minutes for someone to decide to get my order. The coffee was ok. Ok as in "to prepare it like this I would've just done it in my house". Not an offense but not really what we would expect from a place with those prices. With the exception of the particular waitress that serviced me, the rest of the staff stroke me as impatient and borderline rude. I had a terrible experience. read more

Ah, how I love this Schöneberg cafe. Cafe BilderBuch is cozy place. It almost feels like you're at someone's home because of its decor: Bookshelves, lamps, and a hodgepodge of couches and dining tables. It's usually quiet and peaceful around the morning and early afternoon hours. During the evening, it becomes busier as more patrons show up, but it's never boisterous. On occasion, someone will just walk up to the piano and started playing. I'm unsure if anyone can do that, but either way it's cool and adds to the ambiance. When I frequented this cafe, I usually ordered their fruit teas that come in their own tea pot. They not only smelled good, but they had a pleasant fruity flavor that was decent when drank without any sweeteners and milk. Whether you order tea or coffee, you receive a tasty cookie -- I have yet to find a coffee shop in The States that does that! Their teas may be good, but I don't like their food, specifically, their apple strudel. The one I received was surprisingly very sweet because of whatever kind of fruit sauce they drizzled on top. The service was consistently good. Our servers were always nice and had pleasant dispositions. Be sure to drop in if you're in the area. Drink some coffee and tea, and unwind for a bit. read more

If you want to just slouch around, take the weight off your feet after an afternoon of shopping, relax on comfortable sofas then this is the place. Make your way through to the backroom. It's has a large living room kinda feeling. You can meet your friends there and chat away all day. Or sit and read in an armchair. Work on your laptop. It's more about atmos. here. Bilderbuch offers drinks and food like any other cafe. Service is a bit slow echoing the relaxed atmosphere. It's a great meeting place. I like the lounge music. Sometimes they have a live pianst... I don't know why I wrote that as I'm sure a dead one wouldn't be good for anyone! Anyway it's nice to have breakfast to some live music. Food is average but having said that once or twice they have offer some great bakes. On those days I eat, otherwise I just take a drink and melt into the sofa whilst talking crap hours on end to friends. There is also an outside area front and back. read more

This is a sweet little cafe in Schöneberg that is more of a library than a coffeeshop. Enter the doors and you'll be met with a small area with tables and a bar. Follow the hallway back to the end, and it opens out into a large room with mismatched couches, tables and chairs, surrounded by books and lamps and groups quietly chatting amongst themselves. I came here in mid-December, seeking refuge from the rain. My companions joined me around a large table placed next to the piano - lucky for us, a group of carolers and their accompanist would later serenade the room. We all ordered food; I had a coffee and a vegetarian sandwich, while they (being Swedish) indulged in some fish and various other meats. The price tag for what we consumed wasn't so bad either. While it's a bit out of my normal way, it's still a worthwhile stop - or destination - for anyone in the area. Oh, and in addition to the books on the walls, there's free WiFi too. read more

SUPER cosy (the hidden room in the back). If you are brining a book or a friend or just wanna sit and think it's perfect. If you come for working (and need Internet) it's the worst place ever. Horrible wifi hotspot connection (less than 1mbps) that keeps on disconnection. Good was OK, but nothing special. Their heiße Schokolade is water based - big minus. I'll give it a three because of the interior and cosiness, but could of gotten a 4 if food was better and less pricey. read more

This happens to a lot of places. They become too popular and slide into bad habits. This place has lost its charm. The interior looks a little used. Most importantly, the food and coffee is not good and well above local prices. The service people are overworked. No card payments possible. The washrooms are nice but that can't turn around the fact that this place has been an institution in Schöneberg. But so many great new places have popped up in the neighborhood, its best times seem to be over. Btw, super slow WiFi with a clumsy registration process was normal around 2007 we have fiber cable and different speeds these days. read more

A perfect little place for a summers brunch or a quiet drink on a warm eve. Celebrating the Mrs 40th we headed to the beautiful city of Berlin and stayed very close by to Cafe BilderBuch. We first stumbled upon this place looking for a nice place for our first pint of German beer. It's got a really relaxed atmosphere. Even at the time of night we arrived there were people with their laptops, books and old men chatting and enjoying the night with a bottle of vino of beer. We sat on the street seating and watched the world go by on our first night. The next morning after looking at the breakfast buffet at the hotel we decided to skip it and come here as we'd noticed a great breakfast menu. Well, I'm not a fan of German coffee, but I'm a fan of everything else. I had a lovely omelette. Fresh egg, mushrooms and herbs. Served with a crisp salad and varied bread bin. We sat outside the back in a huge patio seating area and enjoyed our breakfast al-fresco. It was the perfect breakfast experience. The service was fantastic and the price really reasonable. Would highly recommend making a pit stop here. read more

I would give them less if I can. Horrible service very rude owner she screamed at us in German even though we told her politely that we couldn't understand. She also cursed at us thinking that we wouldn't understand her cuss words just for switching our places because there was bad signal and no plug for the charger where we were sitting. This place is great - lots of food choices ranging from delicious eggs, fish platters, fine cheeses and freshly squeezed OJ! All very fresh food and brunch goes till late so no need to wake up early to go! There's also a nice back patio garden area to eat on top of eating inside or outside on the sidewalk. I felt like I stepped into a retirement home but I'm saying this in the least offensive way possible. This cafe is nice and cozy and there is a HUGE back room. There are comfy sofas everywhere. This cafe would be perfect if you wanted to find a place on an afternoon to read a book but I find it a little too dark to really study in. I met a tandem partner here and I decided that I really had to have dinner. I ordered a Cauliflower, potato and scrambled egg plate. I have to say, it was enormous and extremely tasty. It had a Hollandaise sauce that was very yummy as well. The service wasn't great but the food and the ambience were fantastic. The price for the amount of the food and the tastiness was absolutely incredible! The interior was very comfortable and homey feeling. I didn't get a chance to try one of the cakes as I was completely stuffed from all the food. It was a tad bit too salty though. The service wasn't great but everything else made up for it! Aside from the nice decor, I felt this place was a bit overpriced and unaccommodating. My friend and I were exploring Shöneberg and had been told that this was a good cafe for a snack... We sat down and were both planning on just getting a pastry and a drink but that's not possible. All their sides have to be ordered as ACTUAL sides. You can't just get a croissant - you have to get the whole French Breakfast. The spreads are .90 each which I felt was a bit steep for packages or honey and Nutella. The green tea was... €3.30!!!! I was baffled... So expensive for a small cup of tea! It comes in a pot but I didn't think it was anywhere near worth that. My friend wanted just a couple brotchen and butter and jam and she was going to have to pay for a whole meal but nicely the waiter obliged and let her just order that. Her coffee was small and €2.50! Love it or leave it! Are you looking for fast and obliging service or for fine creative cuisine? Skip this café. Do you need an old chair to give some rest to your tired soul, a motley audience to satisfy your curiosity, an impressive piece of cheesecake to sweeten the novel you cannot tear yourself away from? Go for it! Furniture of indeterminate age presumably from one of the Berliner flea markets, books on the shelves, relaxed atmosphere, unhurried waiters, and generally tasty food that's what the BilderBuch is about. Occupy one of the cosily sagging down armchairs, order a cake or a breakfast (till 23.00) and relax there for ours chatting, reading, observing. My favourite breakfast Geschichten aus der Molkerei: lots of different cheeses, all of them simple but fresh and a big basket with various kinds of bread. For God's sake don't get frightened by their terribly looking website. The location looks much more appealing in the reality. Don't miss the backroom; it is nicer than the front one. read more

My recent experience with Cafe Bilderbuch was unfortunately not so good. I came to the waitress and tried to ask her sth but she ignored me completely and looked only at a screen. I was standing next to her and there were only very few customers at that time. To the third time I called her, she replied inattentively while her eyes are still on the screen. Breakfast at the Bilderbuch Café is truly an awesome decision every time. The setting is unique - the place is a converted first floor appartment with open floor plan and nothing but old furniture you would find in your grandparents appartment. The breakfast is awesome and plenty for many to share. Prices are reasonable. Parking can be a little bit of a hassle. Do go. You won't regret it. read more

This is my favourite place in berlin for a sunday afternoon. As soon as you get in you will feel like being home. You can enjoy your brunch surrounded by an amazing atmosphere. Both upstair and downstair there is a piano, and if you are like you can have live music in the background agile you are enjoy you brunch. Such a cute cafe/bookstore/brunch place!! You must check out the back of the cafe where the layout of the room is like a library. It's super homey and it's great sitting there to read or eat brunch with friend. The wifi isn't that great in the back (much better in the front)... so if you want to work, would recommend working the front of the cafe or finding somewhere else. We got Hansel and Gretel and the portion was so big!! Definitely split it with someone or two, and you will all be pleasantly full. read more

Had the vegetable potato pancakes and it was pretty bad. Very bland, the only flavour on the plate was the canned applesauce and salad dressing. The place has more of a restaurant feel tuna a cafe where I could sit and work at for a few hours. So the poor food and more formal ambience put together make this place a no go for me. My friend and I came here for brunch last Saturday morning. We wanted to get a table on the ground floor, but the rooms were too full, so we went upstairs to the buffet room. The buffet area was not as pretty and bright, but it was quieter and more relaxing. The buffet featured a reasonable variety of meats, cheeses, vegetables, both smoked salmon and smoked trout, caviar on boiled eggs, and even soy yogurt.
