Be still my heart! We didn't have tons of time in Amsterdam, but I'm glad we tracked down this cafe. I was surprised it wasn't busier, given the unique history of it. This was absolutely THE spot to try a sample of local favorite bar foods. We snacked on Dutch cheese, marinated olives, bitterballen, and meatballs, all with mustards and jams/sauces - every single bite was exquisite. They had a good sampling of local beers, and we tried a few different ones. The service was excellent inside, the bartender was friendly (and funny!) and served us attentively. Great location on the Spui (pronounced Spow) next to the Negen Stratjes. Very crowded after work as the work week winds down, no matter the weather, as there are heat lamps to keep you warm. The final stop of our food tour, Café Hoppe is a traditional "brown café" which means that it is dark wood, smoke-stained and just plain cozy. It's also one of the oldest drinking establishments in the city! We had a genever and a plate of dutch cheese with some pickles. It was actually perfect. Café Hoppe is another one of Amsterdam's oldest bars, founded in 1670. This charming and historical pub is known for their excellent selection of Belgian beers and Bitterballen. Located on the Spui, next to Van Stapele Koekmakerij, this bar is popular amongst tourists and locals. During our visit we managed to snag a table inside (the weather was nice so the locals were taking advantage of the sunshine outside). We ordered a round or two of beers and the Bitterballen (Dutch specialty bar snack) which paired nicely with our beer. I noticed Van Stapele Koekmakerij had just removed a tray of cookies, fresh from the oven so I ran across the street and purchased several cookies to enjoy at the bar. When we stopped by here to get a beer and some snacks I had no idea that this was one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam. It just looked like a cool place to hang out so we did. Sat inside facing the the open windows to the street to watch the afternoon cityscape pass by, as well as the World Cup playing on the TVs (real reason I wanted to stop in). The waiters were very friendly and the beer was delicious. The one thing I really wanted to try was bitterballen. I really had no idea what they were but I was told I needed go try them. They were quite tasty, ordered some bitterballen and some meatballs to snack on whilst drinking some dark beer and watching soccer. What a tasty combination. I later found out that bitterballen are dutch style meatballs. They are made of beef and/or veal with gravy as croquettes. I also found out that almost all the bitteballen in the various pubs, bars and restaurants are made off site almost all from one factory that makes, freezes and distributes them so it really does not matter where you eat these things. Definitely check this place out when you are walking/biking around Amsterdam. read more

If the Dutch Masters were alive today, this would most definitely be their hangout. Cafe Hoppe is loaded with old world charm and is one of the best brown bars in the city. The decor, selection of beers, and service make this one an iconic stop in the city. Yes, when people think of warm, inviting Amsterdam pub, this is what they are envisioning, for it is popular with locals and tourist in the know alike. . Oh, and now that I think of it, let me just say a word or two about this establishment's signature snack: Bitterballen...Yummo!!! These little deep-fried balls of deliciousness are the perfect complement to good Dutch beer. The so creamy that you would swear that they are loaded with cheese, but I am told that it is more akin to beef and gravy which is fine by me for as far as I am concerned beef and gravy is a cousin to cheese on the tastiness scale. Seriously, these babies were one of the best things that I have ever eaten in a bar. In fact, I really do think that they may nudge out my beloved American Buffalo Wings for ultimate bar snack. My local office coworkers took us there. It seems they need to drink several round of beer before dinner. When we got there, there are a lot of drinking outside of the bar. Don't they feel cold to drink outside in the winter? My coworker told me about the bar history. It looks very classic and traditional bar. Mr. Heineken likes it so much. So he bought this bar. I came here on a recommendation by a friend here on Yelp and I was not let down. From the outside it looks like any other cafe in the area or throughout Amsterdam but inside is a more warm atmosphere. It has low lighting but not too dark to trip and far on something. The old wood decor, the waiter/bartenders with white dress shirt uniforms and the way the bar is setup gives an old world charm, a smaller European version of Cheers in Boston. I can definitely see this being a local pub. There were several unique brews on tap I never heard of and don't recall the name. The inside has stools at the bar, couple tables by the window and more table seating in the back. But before even entering, there is one aisle of seats where you can sit outside to drink your beer, no tables. Then there is another section of seating with tables enclosed by glass or plastic housing where you can still have that outside feel but stay warm when it gets too cold outside. My order was a drink and the suggested Bitterballen (Portie Bitterballe) on the side, these little fried balls can be compared to Falafels but varies in recipe, taste and texture. These 8 little balls cost (ONLY) 5.50 Euros accompanied with slices of pickle and mustard, they are amazing. I am sure they are deep fried right there as you order them because each bite was crisp, steaming when bit into and the roof of the mouth scorching, yes burned the roof of my mouth, awesome! That hot burn is something you know is FRESH straight out of the fryer, not heated up. The inside was gooey but not like sauce gooey, like mash potatoes but tasted different, a flavor I never experienced before. The flavor was good and very strong, like it was loaded with spice, butter and bacon... really unique flavor and very filling. After I finish my snack and drink, my appetite was full. Time to continue my trek. -Next door is also a Cafe Hoppe but was under construction. -No Television -Stairs leading upstairs I believe to the restroom or the second level (I don't recall) read more

Café Hoppe is actually two places: an amazing brown café and a very attractive modern establishment. I only patronized the brown café side of it, so that's the part that I'm reviewing. It's a tiny dim café with high ceilings and somewhat of a chill to the air. in the old days, they only had those single pane windows! It's traditional to come in wearing your coat, stand at the bar and enjoy your post-work restoration while standing. Since we were hoofing it through bone chilling Amsterdam, I opted for a seat! Once seated, I ordered snert (split pea soup), bitterballen, and Berenburg for us in my clumsy Dutch. All were SO good. The bartender also had the well-honed skill of filling the glass of Berenburg until it was more than full, with only the surface tension keeping it from spilling. Well, I'm not too proud to slurp the glass while it's still on the table, in order to pick it up! According to the guide book, this place serves the most beer in the Netherlands relative to its square footage. I can believe it! A proud tradition continues. Go there and take part! read more

Hoppe is the best pub in Amsterdam. Discussion over. It is gorgeous inside. Guidebook says it dates back to the 17th century. There's still sand on the floor to relive the old method of keeping tobacco spit from staining the floors. But go there for the libations. The beer is fantastic and the selection is broad. Or sample the Dutch jenever (gin). Either way, you'll be in good hands with the staff. They know their stuff and are there to please. read more

Naturally after reading all the reviews about this place being iconic, I was certain I wanted to visit. I started off extremely excited for the experience. However, from the moment I sat down at the bar, I felt awkward and as if my business was a nuisance. The older bartender looked at me strangely and questioned me impatiently when I asked for suggestions on beer. When I ordered food he seemed to be brushing me off as he noted my order and put it in. Another bartender came up to me and chatted with me, as well asked asked how I was enjoying the food/drinks. He definitely made up in where his coworker was lacking. I thought I was being judgmental and perhaps I was reading his social cues wrong - that's when I heard other customers approach him and complain about his service. As he got extremely defensive and "yeah yeah yeah-ed" and "I don't care-d" them, I knew it wasn't just me. The customers left and he spoke to other customers at the bar about them. I wasn't sure what he had said, but he mimicked the American accent and was acting quite like a child. I thought his performance was extremely inappropriate and unprofessional. The food was wonderful and his coworker was great and gave me excellent suggestions for my travels... but would I recommend? Not unless you want to pay to be somewhere where you'll feel unwelcome. This is a very popular bar in the Spui area. Count on it being standing room only with people eagerly chatting with beer in hand or on the table. Their is also waiter service outside so you don't have to brave the crowd to get a drink. Like the other reviews state, from the outside this place looks like any other cafe or pub in Amsterdam, so when you walk inside you are definitely pleasantly surprised. Historical cafe/pub in prime square of Amsterdam. I had the split pea soup, a hearty choice for 6 euros. It was chock full of ham and slices of sausage, and so thick that it was more like a stew than a soup. They serve it with dark moist bread spread with mustard and what looks like a thin slice of bacon or cured meat. While I loved the soup, and it kept me full for hours, I admit I was a bit fearful of the raw looking bacon/cold cut mystery bread-topper. A Dutch treat that I have no regrets missing out on... I liked the historical character, but smoke from the outside part of the cafe kept drifting in, so not the most pleasant dining experience. Great for people watching, and probably more of a pub that a food destination. read more
