My husband ordered a burger and had them add as egg on top. The cook initially got his order wrong so his food came out later than mine, but his burger was fine and it came with a mountain of fries. However, from what I saw, this was completely unwarranted. This cafe was average in every way. I can't think of a single thing they excelled at, though at the same time I can't think of anything that was clearly subpar. I tend to give 3 stars in this situation, but I just can't do it here because of the feeling I got eating here. Think of your oldest living relative, someone who doesn't go out much and who never travels far. This is the kind of place they would like. People's tastes have changed over the decades, but this restaurant hasn't changed with them. They had a menu posted outside, and at least two inside, and all were different, so examine them all carefully before placing your order. I ended up with the fish sandwich because I didn't see you could get a half portion of the fish and chips because I assumed all menus would be the same. My wife ordered lasagna. After ordering we had to go up and request water separately, which was unusual. My sandwich came, it was fish on store-bought bread with lettuce, tomato and mayo/tartar sauce; it also came with fries. Mine was very bland and just not that good. It was also messier than you'd expect. My wife didn't enjoy her lasagna either; it looked like a hot mess; she picked away at it, scraped off a bunch of cheese (she said it had no meat or tomato sauce, something I thought all lasagna had), picked at her salad a bit then just gave up on her meal altogether. Simply, this place just isn't that good, let alone great. You'd be better off picking another restaurant at random, or as my wife said after leaving, at one of the fast food places in town. Maybe they were good once, but they sure have fallen.

I can only assume that this place has gone downhill since receiving the awards. We walked in, waited in a short line. The cashier refused to say any pleasantries (including "Hello") and would only look at us. It was uncomfortable to say the least. It was especially noticeable when I saw her conversing with many other patrons during our visit. I ordered the lasagna and salad ($17). Honestly, it tasted exactly like Stouffer's lasagna. There was way too much cheese and hardly any meat in the lasagna. There was so much cheese that I scraped off a large amount, leaving about 1/2 cup on my plate. It was greasy and gross. There was no real flavor in the food. Also strange is how they give you a table number and then proceed to go ask everyone in the dining room if this is the food that you ordered. There seems to be no correlation between the table number and the food that goes out. I also observed with several tables how the customer ordered a hot drink (such as a flat white) and never got it until way after the food was delivered and only after they inquired about the drink a second or third time. I saw a sign posted in the dining room reading "unattended children will be taken as slaves." While I have seen many signs regarding unattended children I have never seen one including slave language. I found the sign to be unnecessary (and alarming), as I was the youngest patron in the dining room by several decades. In all, I would stay away.

Relative clean. Set out like a diner. The service: average. The girls behind the counter was rather loud but I guess this is the typical west coast hospitality! The food: has a very busy looking menu. The main selling point is their pizza but you can also get pretty much everything else you find in a typical cafeteria. Has a kids menu also. I've tried two different pizza here in the past. Apart from being salty there is not a lot of flavor. Most of the ingredients are ready made. Drinks: a decent drinks selection, mostly domestic brews. Others: free wifi Overall not terribly impressed, almost tempted to go for the chain pizza store next time.

Go past the other, better known cafe in town and head just past it, up the old oak stair case to where Freddy's is located. You'll be greeted warmly at the top of the stairs and told to sit anywhere. They are used to those trying to grab food before catching the train so if you are in a hurry- they have already prepared items in the case on the counter, or they will suggest what on their regular menu can be gotten quickly. I had plenty of time but ordered one of the "fast dishes" and a cup of tea. In my instance, it was a bowl of seafood chowder and a slice of garlic bread. Quite tasty, warm and fresh, perfect to tide me over until dinner time. Other items on the menu include sandwiches, freshly prepared coffees and pastries, specials and soups of the day and more. It was a great suggestion to eat here and the prices are reasonable too. And the ambiance, while no frills, offers plenty of space to enjoy your food. You may want to grab a table at the windows and people watch as I did . . .very interesting the people who come through this little town! Has a mixture of two and four sweaters as well as a couch for you too relax. The food- has an extensive menu. The good I got was pretty average. Ordered the open Chicken and bacon sammy special. The bread was tough. The chicken was actually tender but not too much flavor. The whole sandwich was a saturated by the time it got to me. Nothing remarkable about the chips. The drinks- standard stuff. Have to say their flatwhite was very well made. Could do with some healthier shakes or fresh juice on the menu. The service- generally friendly, but seem overwhelm at times. Really wanting to give them a higher score, but they are the food does not quite match up with the food. No free internet, but a handy place to catch up with people if you don't want to go to the chain store coffee shop downstairs.

But spending a night in Hokitika and finding a local favorite led me to this place. We came on Christmas Eve about an hour before closing and we just made it in time to get the sandwiches we wanted because shortly after they were sold out of most items. I usually go with what catches my eye first because it's directly connected to my stomach. So the coaster sandwich it was. Fried eggs (runny yolk), prosciutto, aged cheddar, west coast butter, aioli, black pepper, greens. Just as as I was typing that my stomach and eyes were both crying because I couldn't have one and grumbling because it was hungry. We took that sandwich towards the beach and sat in front of the driftwood signs and it was a great place to have our lunch. By far, this was one of those biggest surprises that I had in New Zealand because I never expected to enjoy a sandwich as much as I did, but everything that they had here with the fresh local ingredients and fantastic meats and cheeses, created a fanboy for these sandwiches.
