Heartfelt Vintage - Kate and Cake!

I've been to Heartfelt twice now for tea / coffee / cakes and I'm hopelessly enchanted. The owner,…read moreMandy, is genuine and friendly (as is her adorable puppy that floats around the shop like a little ball of well-behaved fluff). The setting is second-to-none, there are a few antique-y tables surrounded by vintage-everything draped vintage-everywhere. When other customers come in, they're often greeted by name and it gives you the feel that Heartfelt has a very happy and loyal fan-base in it's little nook on Alma Vale Road. I'll warn you now, though - you'll go in for a coffee and a cake, or a nice lunch and you'll end up wanting to buy one of everything before you leave. This single shop could provide my entire wardrobe (although it's slightly pricey, it's also completely unique - not a bad combination IMO). Heartfelt isn't in an obvious location so it's easy to miss, but it's well worth seeking out. It's less than a 5-minute walk from the major coffee shops on Whiteladies Road and it's endlessly better than those impersonal giants...

Hot chocolate is what this place does best I think, I had a regular hot choc with all the toppings, cream, flaked chocolate and marshmallows and it was very enjoyable, I also had a slice of polenta cake which was very nice. I'm giving it 3 stars just because it didn't feel particularly friendly or welcoming, the staff were all nice enough and no one did anything wrong but they were just not what I have come to expect from a good cafe.

From the outside it looks like your average little café, and has a glass front which lets light into the place and creates a relaxing atmosphere. The seats by the window are definitely the best - especially if you enjoy people watching whilst enjoying a coffee! The best thing about Café Meme is their hot chocolates - which I would definitely recommend! They make their hot chocolates using real melted chocolate, and they taste delicious. Try the white hot chocolate - it sounds unusual but is amazing! They serve a variety of light lunches such as paninis, soups, salads etc - so it's perfect if you just fancy popping out with a friend to grab a small bite to eat. One thing to note is that this café is fairly small, and doesn't have the capacity to seat many people - I have visited a few times before and it is often the case that you have to wait for a table. However, if you visit at slightly off peak times such as before lunch or in the afternoon then you are more likely to find a seat! Another bonus is their loyalty card scheme! If you visit often enough you can collect stamps which contribute towards a freebie at the café!

It's a relief, then, to find the Penny Farthing which resolutely is not one of these bars. It's not massively attractive from the outside, the sign in particular looking tired. Things get a bit better on entry. The long bar sweeps through the room elegantly, bringing up the character of the place. Although it could easily be dark and dingy, given the shape the room, they've lit it up well and succeeded in making it feel cosy. A good place to sit out a cold evening. They've made an effort with the selection of beers on offer. Prices hover around three pounds for a pint, which is a bit steep but fair considering what they're offering and the surroundings. Probably in virtue of not being like the rest of the drinking establishments along the road, this place doesn't get too many students (make what you want of that comment - personally I like a place with a studenty feel, but others disagree strongly). The Penny Farthing is a likeable pub and a welcome contrast to its neighbours.

But don't expect any natural light inside. This is a traditional pub, with local regulars and lovely bar staff. They do a Sunday roast, but I really would advise against it, there are much better options nearby. But defiantly come here with a group of mates, sit around one of the high old oak tables, grab a pint (well one for each of you) and soak up the atmosphere. The Farthing is the only pub left in a sea of Tea Rooms and Falafel shops (or hippy nonsense as my unenlightened friends would say). Literally it's hilarious; it looks so out of place sat there by the road amongst the plethora of glass fronted, double glazed, chain restaurants and hair dressers. Let's just hope it stays there!

Far from it in fact. It's refreshingly brilliant! From the outside, Chai Shai is beautiful; dark and deep blue painted walls with a wooden sign really set it apart from its neighbors. They also have the nicest logo and typography I've seen in a long time. I really love their branding. The restaurant looks tiny from the curb, and it is, but it looks really welcoming. They have 3 wooden plant pots just under the window with some herbs and spices in them. Inside has two tables and a well stocked open glass fridge with all of their pakoras and samosas. The smell is so good as you enter I couldn't wait to tuck in! I was there for lunch and had the lunch box meal. It came with a really nice spiced rice, a chick pea curry, samosa and a pakora. The rice was perfect. It had just enough flavour without over powering the chick peak curry - which was also beautiful! I'd normally always go for a meat dish, but it wasn't an option. But I wasn't fussed while I was tucking in. It was spicy enough to take a break every now and again, but so tasty I couldn't stop eating. The samosa and pakoras were both fantastic and you can tell these guys have A LOT of practice in making them. I spoke to the owners for a while and their passion for Bristol and for giving something back to the community was inspiring. They were a lovely couple to chat to. They've only be open for 12 weeks and with their love for cooking amazing food and their love for Bristol, they're sure to do well. Definitely one of my favourite eating experiences in Bristol for a while. I can't wait to go back!
