In a town with more than its fair share of eateries, Cafe Bar Monti - the latest establishment to grace these particular premises - has a lot to live up to.
A recent visit there found the decor little changed from its previous ownership, and the menu is still cakes, baguettes, paninis and jacket potatoes heavy.
Upon ordering jacket spuds for my wife and myself, the owner told me that they would be ready in 6 - 8 minutes, a sure sign that there would be a microwave involved somewhere down the line. And so it was - but it was still tasty, although the green salad was mostly pickled cabbage (?!) and the advertised creamy coleslaw accompaniment had to be asked for when it didn't arrive on schedule and wasn't all that creamy.
3 out of 5 then: tasty food in nice, bright surroundings, and if I'd had one of the lovely looking cakes, I might have marked it higher.
A decent, safe choice. read more
