It was a pleasure to eat here. Even though we had a large group, and arrived a bit late, the staff was very accommodating. Our glasses were never empty for very long, as our waitress was exceptionally perceptive and attentive. The food was delicious. The clam chowder, although on the thin side, was very rich and creamy. Went here for brunch on a Saturday morning with my fiance. It was pretty empty, a few parties on the patio, maybe one other inside. She had the berries and cream French toast which was fantastic, although the whipped cream was super sugary and had an off texture. I had the eggs Benedict Arnold, crab cakes were good, alot of crab - very little bread filler. Poached eggs were both over done, seemed like they were cooked in water that wasn't hot enough. I was super disappointed with this place. We had come by one time and were turned away because we didn't have a reservation. The problem was, the place was empty. Outside eating area was totally deserted. The bar (our preferred place to sit) was half occupied. The host cited a staff shortage which as a teacher I totally feel. So we made a reservation for a later date and came back. Mistake. We were immediately shown to a cavernous dining room (we weren't allowed to sit at the bar...same reason as before) and it was so weird. The lighting was super bright, and for all the attention given to the ambiance of the front dining room and bar area which are lovely, was a stark contrast. I get the ceilings are super high in old buildings but something softer hanging over the tables could have resolved the whole warehouse feel of the recessed lighting. Not cute, plus that lighting shows how little attention is paid to cleaning the tables and surrounding walls. The service was slow (again, understaffed), but our server was super nice. I got their sparkling rosé by the glass and it was very, very good. So that was encouraging. I then had the crab cakes, which had a sophistication of flavor that was unexpected. However, I ordered the crab claws and...what a mess. The server (not our original person) brought them and just set them down in front of me with no little forks or anything. So my partner paid $45 for crab claws I could only eat half of. I was mad. If you are going to serve fresh crab in any iteration, please please please invest in some proper seafood tools. Even a little scoop, if that is all I had, would have allowed me to eat all of the meat. I just felt they didn't make an effort to follow through with their facade of sophistication. We are visiting Austin for a conference and found Cafe Blue through Yelp. We were looking for a dinner spot near the bat bridge and Cafe Blue was a great fit. We were running about 30 minutes late for our reservation and called to say so, the host was great and said that this was no problem. In truth it was dead, so I'm sure we could have showed up anytime. Two members of my party got the simply grilled fish option- one Mahi Mahi and one Salmon and the third person had a salad and a side of the onion mashed potatoes. The potato side dish was by far the most flavorful. The grilled options were served with rice pilaf and sautéed spinach. I had the grilled salmon, and while all of the elements of the dinner were tasty and I devoured them quickly they weren't flavor standouts. I would eat this again for sure, but I won't crave it, and it won't be something I can't get anywhere else. Many other reviewers here mentioned the bread- and they aren't lying, that bread was great! read more

I have serious concerns that the beverages from the bar that we ordered were not the brands we specified. And I'm not guessing on the flavor. Here's why: I get migraines from alcohol with very few exceptions. I was excited to see one of the wines that does *not* give me a migraine was on the menu - and I ordered it. (For the record, it's not just brand, it's also the type of wine. I have done enough experimenting with this. I have tried other types of wine from a brand that is safe, and I still got a headache). Anyway, the next day I had a really bad migraine. When I brought this up to my husband, he also said the beer he ordered did not taste like the brand he ordered that night, which he frequently orders. We didn't say anything at the time, because he will never complain, and because with my condition, I didn't know until the next day. The food was good and the service was fine. I appreciated the hostess seating us in a booth in the back. I hope management will reach out to me so I can give specific details on the night we were there and what was ordered. Overall, Austin really needs a good seafood restaurant like this. Definitely go there for the food! I loved the mussels app and was pleased to see the oyster selection from the northeast. read more

I am very selective about my clam chowder. This cafe delivers. Apparently the chef is from Boston and doesn't play around with an inferior tasting chowder. Another noteworthy dish is the Thai mussels. Once the mussels were gone, the broth was getting dipped in all over the place. That's the sign of a decent mussels plate. Got to have the dipping broth. Had the Po Boy halfie, which is half fried shrimp half oysters - and this one plate could easily feed two. The portion was huge. This is a cool little place that wasn't very crowded despite the quality of the food. The mixed drink "painkiller" is a must get. Huge drink selection. The food menu was way too big. Went last night for hubby's birthday. Disappointed as it was noisy and not quaint/romantic. It lacked ambiance. While our server was kind he had too many tables to wait on. I believe they only had 3-4 waiters thus slow service. We ordered a bottle of wine and after 15 minutes it came out but was the wrong bottle then had to wait another 15 minutes. The assistant manager brought out the next bottle and we thought that maybe he would be helping out but no. We watched another waiter accidentally drop a cup filled with ice and a drink on a guest. Many of the customers seemed frustrated by the lack of prompt service. My daughter (29) got up to go to the restroom and when returning slipped in the bar area on some water that was on the floor. The food was tasty. I had the steak oscar style which was yummy until I had a bite that included something hard which should not have been in my food, yikes!!! The manager was gracious and did not charge us for the meal but I am still unsure what it was. We called ahead to ask if they could help us celebrate my husbands birthday and were told it was on the reservation. They simply brought out a dessert without a candle. We had a very unfortunate experience last night. We tried making reservations online but we're unable to so we just walked to the venue which was a few steps from our hotel. When we arrived the hostess told us there was a 35 minute wait and we could not sit and wait at the bar although we could see multiple open seats at the bar. We stepped outside for less than 3 min to discuss, returned and then were told the wait was now 1.5 hrs as open door reservations had just come in. We explained that we had tried to make online reservations but we're unable and the hostess confirmed that their reservation system had been down. Instead of seating us or offering us any alternative like take out, we were simply turned away. Extremely rude and inconsiderate. While the food may or may not be good, the service was outrageous. Searched for a restaurant with outdoor seating for our one dinner in Austin. We made an online reservation and requested outdoor seating at Cafe Blue because of the outdoor seating and the reviews. When we arrived, there was a large gathering in the bar and all outdoor seats were open. The hostess said our reservation was for the indoor dining room. When questioned, the manager came over and said the outdoor seating was reserved for the large group. My husband told him our reservation requested outdoor and we should have been contacted if it wasn't available. The manager said he never reads the reservation comments. We hoped to participate in happy hour deals this was a major factor in selecting the restaurant. The hostess said that she would see if we could still receive the deals. When we arrived we were denied any of the deals because the "cash register would not accept a late deal". We stayed ordered our food and our dinner salad came incomplete. We then received the missing items to add to our salad. My family and I went to Cafe Blue last night for my birthday and we had a wonderful time. Our waiter J.D. was the absolute best. He really made my birthday evening great. He was very sociable with my family. When I come back I will call ahead to make sure J.D. is working so I can be seated in his area.
