As a resident of the local area for over 5 years, I've been really pleased with this cafe in the past and wanted to give it my support, HOWEVER, the experience I have just had compelled me to write this review immediately.
I went to the cafe and ordered a hot drink. I had to wait close to 5 minutes to be served but that I had no problem with as the one young-ish girl behind the coutner at that stage was clearly very busy and had acknowledged me, telling me she'd serve me in just a moment.
When she did, her service was absolutely fine.
I sat down to have my drink and straight away realised it was way too sweet to even drink (which is a big call as I have a pretty major sweet tooth!). So I went over to the counter with my drink and said to the same girl, "Sorry, I was just wondering if I could have a bit more milk please - this is just a bit too sweet for me to drink".
She was very accomodating and filled a tiny jug with milk she warmed for me. It took about 20 seconds all up, if that.
The issue came however, with an older woman (dyed red hair and grey roots) who was at the coffee machine. She never looked at me but openly made comments and rolled her eyes to the younger girl, clearly intimating that I was being unreasonable and a nuisance. The comments I overheard included, "What does she want more milk for?", "Why are you heating it up for her?", "what's her problem?" etc.
At this point I actually said to the older woman, "Sorry - is there an issue? I was just asking for a top-up of milk because it was too sweet to drink". She rolled her eyes again, never looking directly at me, and never speaking to me. As there was no response i again said, "Sorry, is that rude of me? Is there a problem with asking that?". Again, no response.
I said, "I don't understand why you're being rude to me, that's not good customer service" And sat down to have my drink.
Turns out I was now too shocked and annoyed to drink it! I've never had such an experience before and really smply couldn't understand why there would be an issue with me asking for a little bit more milk to correct the drink they'd already served (and we're only talking about 30-50mL here!).
After a while, when I could see there were no customers waiting at the counter, I went back seeking acknowledgement of and an explanation for the rude treatment. I waited for about 5 minutes. In that time, the two younger girls both came to serve me and I told both of them that "I'd just like to speak to this lady, thanks".
The older woman, who definitely heard me say that twice, ignored me the whole time. When it got past the point of ridiculous, I said to her over the top of the coffee machine, "I can see you're busy, I'd just like to ask you a quick question". She mumbled and sighed something that indicated 'Ok' but, as she still hadn't given me the courtesy of eye contact, I said, "I'd really like it if you could look at me as we speak". She begrudgingly half-glanced in my direction and said in an exasperated tone, "Just go away and leave me alone, I'm busy".
I replied, "I'd just like an explanation as to why you reacted the way you did earlier". After more protests about how I should just leave she said, "I didn't say anything to you, I didn't even look at you before". I said, "I know, that was part of the rudeness I'm trying to understand".
There was more sighing and telling me to leave at which point I had to say, "Look, I've lived in this area for over 5 years -" at which point she butted in, still not looking at me, and said "I've never seen you here once".
I had to process all of this, and the inference that I was clearly going out of my way to come to a cafe I'd never even been to before with the sole purpose of being a nuisance to this poor, unsuspecting cafe worker(!).
Soon enough I said, "I just want to say I've never had this kind of service from here before and I'm really disappointed by it". She replied, "Good, you won't come back then, now go away".
The woman then disappeared to get her phone, although I'm almost certain she was pretending to answer a call... And said into the phone, for my benefit, "Oh, it must be a full moon with all the weirdos out".
How she arrived at that description of me, I'm not sure. I can assure you, readers, that I look pretty normal and somewhat conservative, as anyone on a casual bike ride would. I also made sure throughout the whole exchange that I didn't raise my voice once nor let any offensive kind of tone creep in. And I'd like to say that I have never had such an encounter with anyone so objectionable before - in a hospitality setting or otherwise. I'm one of the last people to complain, I'm usually pretty timid and part of my job involves conflict resolution(!).
I do not know this woman's role at the cafe but she certainly appeared to be the most senior staff member there today (a Saturday).
Sadly, I won't be able to bring myself to go back to this cafe and I recommend you don't either. read more
