Café Continental... really not great to be honest.
Myself and my girlfriend went there on a pleasant Sunday afternoon for a snack but left feeling more than disgruntled. Not in my usual nature to write a review but I do feel compelled in this case.
Whilst placing our order at the counter without a lot of time to consider the options, we were told via a mumble from a staff member that most of the things my girlfriend was asking for (one being a portion of chips which were advertised) weren't available because "the fryer has been turned off" amongst other reasons. With customers waiting and a member of staff making her feel uncomfortable for being unsure, my girlfriend decided to go for the same choice as me. The member of staff mumbled something and gave us some empty bowls? We ordered some drinks and headed for a table passing a waitress with an order in her hands that we'd just been told wasn't available, chips. Anyways, we took our drinks and grabbed a seat at a table that had clearly not even had a quick wipe for a few hours and waited.
Around 10 mins later, the same mumbling waiter brought the food over to us, wearing blue latex gloves with a giant rip in (which to me defeats the point and looks disgusting as hell). We then had to ask for cutlery to which he brought back some knives and forks, that we then felt compelled to wipe over with our serviettes given the unknown stains and marks that were still left on them.
First bite of our jacket potatoes... Roasting hot potato, freezing cold beans and cheese was hardly there. We had the portion sizes that would make anyone think that cheese and beans was being rationed and all of this was served in a grubby bowl.
We decided to give it a go but by the time I was halfway through my my meal, I was defeated by the hardness of the potato and pushed it to one side, my girlfriend following soon after. The icing on the cake was when I decided to add some sugar to my coffee and the contents of both packets of sugar, although unopened, were stuck together.
We called it a day and left, passing a waitress that barely batted an eyelid and the rest of the staff who had served us said nothing at all as we left.
Worthing is a lovely place to enjoy a quieter day and we really were let down by the lack of thought and time taken to serve us and prepare our meals. I wasn't expecting a 5 star restaurant but at the same time, for me to leave with the idea that next time I would rather have paid half to have better tasting and warmer food in McDonalds is saying something. On the way out we passed a salad bar which must have explained what those empty bowls were for.
Overall, bad service, overpriced and poor quality of food, dreary decor and the place itself had a depressing atmosphere in it that reminded me of the kind of enthusiasm you would expect from a motorway services. It felt like nobody really gave a damn and we definitely will not be returning.
