One of several places in the city where you can duck into a lower-level restaurant and be transported back in time with traditional Danish food (mainly smørrebrod and an extensive list of snaps) and traditional Danish decor. It's dark, with lots of wood paneling and old photographs, and very cozy. Here you will find mainly men taking a work lunch, older Danes catching up over herring and snaps, and the occasional eccentric old woman who eats alone with a fabulous purse.
Pricey, but I suppose it's to be expected with a location right on Gammel Torv. And I think they do a very fine job with their smørrebrod. The pieces I have ordered have always been more of a 'plate' than a single piece, with extra garnish and flavors on the side. Try the traditional marinated sild with onion and capers for something tart. The smoked salmon with scrambled egg is simple but perfectly done - with a creamy, soft mound of yellow eggs atop a generous serving of salmon.
The waiter has been attentive every time but it does get crowded at lunch so go here for more of a leisurely lunch, perhaps with people-watching and eavesdropping. read more
