A decent place for "Mexican" food. For European standards on Mexican this place is not bad, though can't compare to anything that North Americans would expect. I had a chimichanga which was good. The menu states that all of their food use Mexican spices but it you want it hot you should ask. I of course asked to make it as hot as it comes. They did not disappoint, it was decently spicy. Before dinner we has sangria (red flag...this is Spanish not Mexican!) and it was not so great. It tasted more like fruit juice than an actual alcoholic drink. One nice thing they do it let you pay your bill individually if you are in a group. We were and we each went to the register and told the person what we ordered and paid individually. I feel like I enjoyed Cafe Mexicana when I was a teenager, but I feel like the place has gone downhill over the years. The service wasn't great and the wait for the food took very long and it wasn't that great. Waited 40 minutes to be seated even though we had a booking for 8. The service was so bad, literally shocking. I had to call the server to order a drink and I had to call to order and thats the only service we got. We had mole and the chicken was 100% reheated and not fresh. TWICE I tried to tell my waiter and TWICE he walked away as I was mid sentence!! We were shocked. I told the guy at the till just how unsatisfactory our experience and food was and he offered zero compensation for our meal. If I were to be generous I would say that perhaps this restaurant is geared to a different palate but it certainly did not taste anything like authentic Mexican food. Everyone knows a restaurant that is a lot nicer in their memory than in reality. It might be the site of a first date, or somewhere your parents would bring you as a kid. Mexicana is one of those places. Cork isn't exactly blessed with Mexican food, so Mexicana suffers from having no real competitors in the city. The menu hasn't changed in years, but there's some good stuff to be had. Especially the cashew nut salsa chicken, or the bunuelo & ice-cream. I've been coming here ever since I moved to Cork, and for a long time, it was the only Mexican food in town. It still pretty much is, if you're looking for a sit-down restaurant. Both food and service have steadily improved, and it's a place I'm happy to recommend. The food comes quite quickly, and the staff are helpful and friendly. The food isn't quite like the Mexican you'd get in the States, but it is very flavourful and filling. And the margaritas now pack a kick! Will definitely be back. read more

I have a had a good experience here and a bad one. The first time it was wonderful. Cute little restaurant with lots of authentic looking decor. There is a moderately sized downstairs and more room upstairs. The first time the food was fantastic, I didn't realize we had a mexican food place in cork! The second time i went the food was not as impressive as my friends tacos had clearly been microwaved and the shell had become soggy and gotten stuck to the plate. But they did immediately get another meal for her and comped her dessert which was nice of them. I would go here again because it is the only mexican food place in cork. *Update* I went again to see if i had a better experience here and the first thing I noticed when i got in here again was the ding of a microwave...not just once about 3-4 times. My husband and I went to this restaurant on a little "date" one day. We went for lunch, and I must say, after enjoying Mexican food in the states - this was nothing to write home about. I make better refried beans and salsa at home. I was really disappointed. The waitress was more interested in her cell phone, and talking to the fellow in the back. She didn't give us menus until we had been sitting there for about 10 minutes (I even waved at her when we went in, and pointed at a table, asking if it was ok that we sat there). She didn't come take our order until I asked her over from another table who arrived after us. At this point, we had been there for more than 30 minutes. This was my first time in this little place (and by little I mean LITTLE) and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Although its small Cafe Mexicana has a warm, homely and all together Mexican feel. The menu is a mix of Mexican classics such as burritos, nachos and chimichangas and would not be for plain eaters. I myself had the combination platter to start which consisted of a beef queso, mexican style chicken wings and ribs and corn chips and guacamole. This was perfect for two people and was a nice way to start off the meal. For my main I had a beef burrito which was by itself a bit ordinary but when mixed with the sour cream and jalapeno pesto provided was out of this world. That is not the only thing that is out of this world the guacamole is TO DIE for and I highly recommend a side order of it with the corn chips. I also tasted some of their chicken fajitas but be warned they are so deliciously homemade that you will never eat packet spice mixes again. Most of the dishes come with rice which is tasty and adds to the filling nature of the food. Not being a dessert person I had a mojito after the meal and I must say it was made from scratch and one of the best mojitos I have ever had. I tasted the vanilla ice cream and found it to be a bit artificial tasting which is an absolute no for me so if I had went with the ice cream I would have been disappointed. Overall it was a very filling and satisfying meal which was very tasty. I knocked a star as it is quiet pricey for what you are essentially getting and it wouldn't be a place I could afford to eat in all the time. It being so small also makes it difficult to move around other diners, servers etc. and it would most certainly not be wheelchair friendly. Having had american Mexican food and this I would say that there is no comparison however this is a nice little place that I can go to for my Mexican fix should I need it! read more

I'm from The States, in Colorado to be exact. So I have had some real authentic Mexican food as well as plenty of decent "Tex-Mex". This place is not even close to what you can get in The States. So, if you are expecting that, don't bother. The food is simply OK by Europe standard though. The service was a bit slow. I am not a great fan of spicy food so I can only think that the inviting decor of Cafe Mexicana tempted me. I went for the safe option and purchased the chicken taco which was delicious as was a Margarita I had after the meal. Overall it was a decent dining experience, the restaurant had a fun vibe to it and the service was very quick but not too quick that you couldn't linger after you'd eaten. read more

Cork and latin spirit go together well - there's quite a few texy-mexy restaurants in Cork, but Mexicano is porbably the original and definitely the best. Have always had a good time, and great food there. Thoroughly recommended. read more

Honestly there's NOTHING wrong with this place other than the fact they serve French fries

I've been here MANY times and have ALWAYS enjoyed it!! Apart from the last time... I found some plastic in my food!! I was apologized to by a waiter and as I rather lost my appetite, I didn't feel like the rest. I was promised a meal on another visit due to the inconvenience. It's been weeks and remembering I still had this offer, I decided to call to book some time this weekend. I was yelled at, accused of putting plastic in the food myself for a free meal, I was sweared at a ridiculous amount of times, told that the waiter who made this promise should be fired and that I was a liar... Words cannot describe how disappointed and mostly shocked(!!!!!) I am!!! Never again. This place does not deserve my loyalty after this unreal rude name calling service!!! read more

I am from the southern USA, and so might be biased... The first time I went there in 2011, it was phenomenal. Very impressed with the food, particularly its spiciness. The server told us the chef was from Houston. I was excited to return there in 2013, but about choked when my salsa tasted like bottled ketchup (and not even American ketchup, but the way too sweet Irish version of ketchup)! Nothing tasted fresh, nothing tasted good, and the service had also declined miserably.
