We chose to eat here because they didn't seem as busy as other restaurants, they had a lot of empty seating. We saw lots of employees working but no one greeted us. We finally asked someone if we could be seated. After we were seated, they brought us menus. The server was nice. I asked for a recommendation between the Caffe Nutella or the Caramel and he said Nutella. I went with his recommendation and it was good. My daughter wanted breakfast but they were no longer serving breakfast. It took several minutes for our drinks to come out, and it took about 20-30 minutes for our food to arrive. The server didn't check in on us at all and didn't bring us napkins until I asked. We ordered a cheeseburger, enchiladas suizas, lasagna, a smoothie, several aguas de Naranja, and a coffee. The enchiladas were super spicy! For someone who does not eat spicy, they were extremely spicy. We were having a wonderful conversation but kept getting interrupted by vendors, which, honestly, ruins the vibe. I understand vendors have to sell but we are trying to eat and talk. The bathrooms are nice and clean. The inside of the place is super cute. My recommendation is eat inside so you can eat in peace and enjoy the cute vibe. Our total was $910. read more

I've been to Cafe Michelena twice. The first time was an enjoyable experience with good service and food, back in 2023. This visit was the complete opposite. The staff is rude and dismissive, the food order was incorrect, the food arrived cold, and the dishes were flavorless or made incorrectly. The cafe has turned into a tourist trap due to its proximity to the plaza in the centro. It's not worth the money or time. I recommend La Guercita only two blocks away if you want good, tasty food and attentive service. Examples. My mocha had no chocolate flavor and my wife's dirty chai tea was not anything close. My father in law order juevos rancheros that came out completely cold and the sauce was wrong. And I was told that a chicken Milanese torta would take 45 minutes. Guess breaded chicken is a hard dish to cook. Pass on this place. There are many other better places in the centro to get breakfast or lunch. read more

Its an ok restaurant in the historic center of the city. I didn't try the Mexican offerings which looked good--better than what I ordered. I got the thyme roasted chicken and potatoes. Was a bit dry--both the chicken and potatoes. The beet-grapefruit salad was ok. The ham potato croquettes were ok. Gotta say the plating is on point--very artfully presented. They offer a few beers, wines, and a larger option of coffees and desserts. The service can be hit or miss. If you sit outside the male server provides great fast service. Inside however the last time I was there, it seems another server forgot I was there. Yes I was there twice. However if you prefer a quieter environment, dining inside is probably best. I get the impression that breakfast offerings are the better choice, however they are only available in the morning. For a last minute meal it's ok. There are many other restaurants in the city however--choose which ones you want to hit up. Some of the better restaurants are not in the historic center however. Have you ever sat at a small table in a quaint, bustling cafe in Mexico on a rainy day? Have you ever ordered a breakfast that never arrived? Have you ever had a robust piece of frijole art in a heavy glass frame come crashing down on your small table, land directly on an artisanal glass cup full of purple sand and shatter? Have you ever listened to what happens in a bustling cafe when glass shatters and everyone instantly becomes quiet and stares in your direction? Well Yelp fam, this is precisely a small sampling of the experiences Randall and I encountered at Cafe Michelena's haunted frijoleria and biblioteca. I mean, I hella have to hand it to this establishment. The foyer is lined floor to ceiling with expensive art books (none of which you're actually allowed to touch or even look at), and the menu is robust and various in its offerings (even if they never intend on actually giving you your food). Randall and I found this cozy confines of this cafe after a week of traveling through the Mexican country side. Needless to say, I was hungry for a fucking crepe. Upon entering Michelena, we were greeted by a young girl with pan stuck in the multi-colored braces adoring her shape dientes. They asked us to wait and we did. We tried to read the art books and we were admonished. We tried sitting at a vacant table and we were scolded. We tried ordering food and we were ignored. Randall ordered from the Caucasian section of the menu: Fruit juice and a goddamn blueberry muffin. It was embarrassing to say the least. I have to hand it to him though. He tried ordering in Spanish. It sounded like this: "Ho-la, me jamo Randall. Yo ke-ero una blueberry muffina y una hu-gu de neringha". Yeah. This is the man I love. I was honestly so embarrassed that I just pointed at something random. It never came. What did come, was a massive piece of framed art, off its small, precarious hook and onto our table. The glass shards landed in our laps. Randall screamed. We refused to move and forced them to pick the glass pieces off our laps with their bleeding fingers. 3.5 hours later, Randall's muffin was rock hard, my food was still missing and we decided to leave. Randall stood up and with a flourish of disdain usually reserved for soccer Mom's, walked over to a tray of day old pastries, selected the apple injected croissant, slammed it on our table and declared it compensation for our troubles. We split it. 45 minutes later I had a cup of corn and mayonnaise and 2 churros. Viva Mexico. read more

I now live in Morelia (Nov 2018 -) and I ate at this restaurant twice in first few weeks I was here. With one star marked above, you KNOW what's coming next. The food is HORRIBLE. I ate outside and had enchiladas on my very first night here--somewhat late, in the dark, and after a long bus ride from Mexico City. I was starving. Had I not been starving, I never would have finished the meal. Having a somewhat generous nature, I tried them again! I sat inside and ate something (I forget now what it was) but it was salty beyond belief. If you're older--like me--you might remember chipped beef, that we'd eat on toast. And you'll probably remember that it was pretty salty! Well, this meal was BEYOND chipped beef. It was on the border of being too salty to eat. Period. So I vowed never to eat there again. When you try two times, and the second meal is worse than the first, it's easy to spot a trend! My tip: Avoid, avoid, avoid, avoid. read more
