Letchworth was founded by Ebenezer Howard in 1906, and being a Quaker he forbade alcohol and pubs etc within the city limits. That is not common for Brits - who love their beers and gin and tonics!! So the growth of pubs and licensed premises in the last decade or two has been "refreshing"!! Both Mrs G and I loved this place! On day 1 Mrs G went for a burger which she liked very much indeed, while I opted for the full English breakfast which was excellent! We both had juices (no booze!!) while on day 2 we both took the buttermilk pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. Rare in England and delicious. Service was outstanding, warm and friendly. The whole ambience was wonderful - families, friends, mums and babies groups. Bright, airy, spacious and in the warm weather a beautiful indoor/outdoor experience. It is roasted locally, in an Italian style, but will top your everyday espresso in Italy. It's dark/full roasted, but with enough aromatics to make it a great all-rounder. My friends had croissant with jam and the like, and it looked pretty and tantalizing, though I can't be tempted by anything but a world-class espresso or macchiato. But since my son was born, we have been coming here a lot, the coffee is tasty, the staff is lovely and the food is ok too. The outside seating is maybe not so great as it is outside of Iceland and poundland, plus it gets too smokey for me. Childwise it is great, lots of highchairs, big changing/disabled toilet plus those mini muffins and babycinos! It is also breastfeeding friendly, they got some sofas and armchairs where you can relax a bit more. We love this Costa my son more or less learnt to walk in here. The staff are amazing and very friendly, if it wasn't for the outside it would get 5 star!

What has happened to Costa Coffee in Hitchin ? We used to go there regularly , but after today's…read morevisit we won't be going there again in a hurry . The seating area just inside the entrance has been totally destroyed , with the comfy furniture has been ripped out and horrible cheap cafe furniture installed . The whole warm friendly atmosphere has gone , and it is now rather scruffy and unwelcoming . Shame on you !
