Food was really really good. From the homemade fish finger sandwiches, to the pulled pork and caesar salads to the freshly squeezed lemonade....everything was delicious. Wifi was fast and efficient, the selection of breakfast pastries and toasts good and efficiently priced. I look forward to coming back here again and getting more of a feel for the place. The staff are lovely, and there's a small, yet still fairly extensive choice of cafe style breakfasts and baked goods. The last time I came was just before Christmas, and despite being a small space, still feels covid safe with massively doctoring the atmosphere, which definitely needs some kudos, as it can be a hard balance to get!

I had spotted the pavement blackboard that advertised a posh 2-course lunchtime special outside this strikingly beautiful old building, and in I went. It was delicious - rare beef and black pud on fresh peppery salad leaves, then summer pudding. Mmmmm. Next work trip, I returned for an evening meal. My partner was mightily impressed with the historical (1300s?) surroundings, a tastefully preserved medieval guild hall, with twisty staircases and huge fireplaces. The clientele were well-heeled locals, as this place is not cheap, and is clearly a special occasion eating destination. The wines were good, but the beers were even better, with local ales such as Shropshire Lad available. The food was tasty and presented in the fashionable "Masterchef " style. The friendly Danish waiter showed us the upper floor which has been converted into hotel rooms - again, stylish but pricey. Definitely worth a visit, a stunning building, a luxurious dining experience, and If your wallet can cope, a classy bed and breakfast.

The maître d' (or at least we assume that's what he was) seemed to always say the wrong thing (he totally confused us about when they were going to serve our wine; how hard can it be, and asked how our food was when we were still waiting to be served!). He just made us feel uncomfortable, which the chairs also did, because they are too low and because of the antique table it was impossible to pull them in far enough to get comfy. It was overpriced; if charging £64 for a Chateaubriand you would expect it to be carved at the table, otherwise it just looks like a very expensive roast! To top it all off, the table next to us complained (very politely) and we had to listen to the maître d' say they wouldn't get anything off their bill because "management were too busy doing what management do" and that it was the rest of the teams' fault (we actually felt the other waiters were doing the best they could)!!! All that said, it is a shame as the food was actually nice (although overpriced). Everything was done well and the cheese board contained a few pleasant surprises. Just a shame they fell so far short of what they are trying to be...

So unfortunately that's where the 5th star dropped for me. Food wise; I ordered the bacon and syrup pancakes which was lovely, American style pancakes they were very filling! Would order again! He has made improvements to the decor, but the food is sill basically the same: good, home-cooked, no-frills and very reasonably-priced. I had stilton/broccoli quiche, with baked potato and side salad. Very tasty and extremely good value. The cakes and lemon meringue look very tasty too! It's friendly, very local. Recommended...as is the Market Hall itself. They have a piano near the buffet...come and play for free!
