Some of the best food in Belfast! Perfectly done French Onion Soup, gorgeous buttered baby carrots, and exceptional Hollandaise were delightful. Our server, and restaurant supervisor, Andrei was attentive, engaging and efficient. We treated ourselves to mini profiteroles and orange creme brulee as well. Their upstairs seating overlooks the city hall square and makes you feel as though you are in a secret tranquil spot above the city.

We both had the slow roast beef with red wine jus. It broke apart on the fork touching it. Flavours were amazing and beautifully presented. For dessert I had a lemon and blackberry panna cotta with homemade shortbread. My mum had the apple crumble with clotted ice cream. We had a taste of each other's, but they were both delicious. I was almost tempted to ask for another dessert just to be greedy lol Overall. The service was good. Excellent food, great atmosphere and nice surroundings. Will definitely be back here before next week is out. Prices are also very reasonable for the type of food. Another excellent lunch here today. The food is so nice we've booked a table again for Wednesday. Can't wait to go back.

With Latitude Restaurant, the team of Akhil (front of house) and Amit (Head Chef), really have brought East and West together perfectly well and have fulfilled both the above definitions. Latitude (formerly Lolita), is in the leafy suburbs of Stranmillis residing at 66 Stranmillis Road, Belfast. It opened earlier this year in February. My wife and I decided to give it a try and chose Latitude as it really offered a true fusion between East and West cuisine. With the two little ones dropped off with grandparents it was our wee date night. We arrived around 6.30 pm last Friday evening (17th June) and ascended our stairway to heaven. The first thing that struck us was that there was lots of natural light and the signage was very elegant. When we entered the dining area it was a compact sized and nicely decorated dining area, holding 50 people comfortably, without being too obtrusive. Our waitress had the biggest smile I've seen for a while and was extremely welcoming. She seated us and took our drinks order. We started with sparkling water whilst we perused the wine and main menu. The wine menu was very extensive and offered wines of all calibre. We opted for the 2013 Rooks Lane Shiraz from Australia. This was presented to us by Akhil himself. A note on the menu, it's great to see the whole menu on one page albeit a rather large one!! We opted for a starter each and a main course each. For starters I chose Prawn Gratinee and my wife had the calamari. This came out after about ten minutes and was piping hot. The 4 King Prawns were served in a Spanish mini paella dish with warmed bread, wedge of lemon and on a square plate. My wife chose the calamari, which were breaded and served on a metal ladle holder with a green salad, wedge of lemon and garlic mayo all on a slate. My prawns were in garlic, chilli, wine and tomato sauce and all the flavours were discernible. The calamari was soft and perfectly cooked-not rubbery and the taste of garlic lemon really came through. Now I do prefer my food on white round plates but alas the slate and black square plate did not detract from the delicious starters. After about ten minutes of just chilling and relaxing, enjoying the wine (my wife was drinking as I was driving!!) our main courses arrived. My wife went for the Mushroom linguine and I the Grilled Chicken Supreme - with a twist...... The mushroom tagliatelle came out on a huge bowl and looked and smelt divine. I ordered the chicken but changed a few things. I substituted the bacon mash for garlic potatoes and the tarragon sauce for pepper sauce. Suffice to say my two substitutions were definite game changers. The garlic potatoes were certainly garlicky but had an Eastern touch mainly that they were cooked with a touch of spice- turmeric and cumin. This is a true fusion twist which worked so well on traditional garlic potatoes. The mushroom linguine was creamy and plenty of umami taste and the truffle oil was subtly present. We had little room left for the mouth watering desserts (indeed had to take the remnants of the linguine home). We did squeeze a regular coffee and a Bailey's coffee to finish the evening off. In summary the restaurant is very relaxed and the staff are attentive, I still cannot believe we spent nearly 3 hours there! We had all of this for just over £65. This is definitely a great place where East meets West. Latitude also have a private function room with a capacity of 50-60 people where you can have for free, but have food packages per person to suit your needs."

The food is absolutely divine and they even have a pianist playing beautiful music throughout the evening. We went here on a date and couldn't have picked a more intimate venue. The menu isn't overly long which I like as I always see about a million things I want, but here, it's nice and simple. I went for the Greshingham Duck which was absolutely perfectly cooked and my partner had the steak which was also cooked just the way he wanted it! Highly recommend Drennans for a nice romantic dinner, If the prices put you off for the evening menu, come between 5 and 7 and you can get the early evening menu priced an £12.95 for two courses and £10 for three, a real bargain considering a main will set you back about £17 after 7. And the menu is just as good!

We pushed the boat out at Christmas and did BYO in style with several bottles of Moet. Champagne in a restaurant at supermarket prices (OK plus corkage) - how fab is that?! It's a long narrow space which makes it feel intimate without the feeing that you're sitting on top of the table next to you. I went with a few raucous friends and at first was disappointed to be seated at a little booth right at the door. But it was also right at the (unlicensed) bar and therefore the cute waiters so all good as it turns out. The food is up-market bistro-ish. Things like smoked chicken salad, duck confit, scallops and black pudding. It's not the cheapest place to eat but remember that you are really saving on the booze. The hake main course for example is £17 but comes with potatoes so you don't really need a side order. Unless you are a glutton like me. There is a set menu before 7pm at £13 for 2 courses and £17 for 3 courses which I think is great value and which I am planning to try after a hard afternoon shopping. The best bit of my evening was the resident singer and piano player. Easy on the eye with the kind of deep raspy voice which alludes to some hard living. Fab.

The pre-theatre menu is good value at 2 courses for £15, but I think they would be better off throwing a glass of wine into it too just to make it VERY good value. The starter was amazing I had charred, chick pea vegetables with spiced Feta. It was delicious. We were a little let down as they didn't have any of the pinot grigio left that we ordered and our second choice was a rather sharp wine that I wasn't fond off. The main was tasty, but as we ordered off the pre-theatre selection which is a little limited (Especially if you want a vegetarian main) I ended up with fish goujons. It was nice but a little more 'posh fish and chip shop' than 'contemporary restaurant' which is what I was looking for. As I say, I am a fan of the place as I have eaten there before a few times and always had a good experience. So definitely 4 stars, I'm chalking last night down to me being in a fussy mood, and disappointed about the wine!

Once I was a regular here, having reviewed Shed in 2015 awarding a four star rating and five stars…read morein 2016. Unfortunately, I'm no longer a fan and now avoid Shed completely. They have, according to staff, stopped offering a dedicated vegetarian menu and now offer only one veg option integrated into the main menu, usually a boring risotto. More importantly I have found a particular waiter, possibly supervisor/ manager, extremely rude and obnoxious on my last three visits, spanning over the period of a year and which can be summarised as follows: Visit 1) Asked waiter (seemed new as we had not seen him in Shed previously) if we could see the dedicated vegetarian menu. He looked at us bemused and in a patronising tone enquired if we were sure we really wanted vegetarian food. I was quite taken aback by this as obviously we would only ask for such a menu if we wanted a vegetarian meal. He then told us Shed didn't have one, to which I responded that we had eaten there numerous times previously, always ordering off the vegetarian menu, plus it was still listed on their website. He stormed away from our table and came back with vegetarian menus but proceeded to tell us that half the items were unavailable, Shed will stop offering a dedicated vegetarian menu in future and reiterated again that we might like to order "something better" from the main menu. I could hardly believe his condescending manner and the rude way he spoke to us. We ordered from the vegetarian menu, ate and left. Although food was good, the poor attitude of this man created a bad ambience and we did not enjoy our evening. In hindsight, due to his rudeness, we should just have left immediately without ordering - but I think we were quite stunned by his manner, hence didn't react as we should have. Visit 2) Having enjoyed Shed in the past I was hopeful the above experience was a one-off blip. Thus a few months later I called in again. Unfortunately the same lousy maître d' greeted us at the door. I use the term 'greeted' loosely, because a lump of driftwood could display better customer service skills than this man. To clarify he is unwelcoming, unsmiling and unhelpful. Determined not to waste our evening again, before being seated we asked if the vegetarian menu was still available. He told us it wasn't, but that there was one vegetarian main - risotto. We declined, thanked him, and left. Not that he deserved thanks, as his attitude problem was still blatantly evident. Visit 3) A couple of month ago, more out of mischief than anything, I thought I'd pop in whilst passing, to ask if they offer vegan options. We were sure the maître d' would provide much amusement for us via his response. Alas, he was confused and initially didn't seem to know what we were talking about. He examined the menu closely before pointing out an onion soup starter and a risotto main. I had to clarify vegan meant no butter and creams etc. He couldn't confirm the ingredients of any dishes, didn't bother to check with the chef, and just said they could "probably" be adapted - but he wasn't sure. Not convinced, we declined such adaptation, thanked him and left. The irony being, as I type this review (05/04/2018), Shed still actually have a full dedicated vegetarian menu listed on their website! So either this man is clueless regarding the menus his restaurant offer, hasn't bothered to update the website, dislikes vegetarians, or is just an obnoxious moron with a terrible attitude. If you want a real-life demonstration of how to destroy a perfectly good restaurant through crap customer service then I highly recommend you book a table in Shed...

This time, once again, our visit was for breakfast before going off to experience the European festival at Slieve Gullion forest park dominated by Polish & Hungarian folk who have made our area their home, their places of work and their and their kids futures and they are very welcome (I wonder if we'll have European festivals up to 2021?!). We both opted for cappuccino with quality sausage, fluffy scrambled egg breakfasts and plump fresh soda bread. Everything about this place is quality but there's one irritation albeit minor but high in the frustration scale; the knives won't easily cut through the soda bread so next time I will ask for steak knives, which does sound a tad silly but it will make life easier. Talk about first world problems. Oh and when we got to the European event we found we could have enjoyed Polish and Hungarian fare, still more first world problems.
