The coffee here is finally a fresh, properly extracted roast unlike most German bakeries that use the automated machines. The cakes are light airy and fresh. Inside, the decorations are beautiful. Cafe Maldaner is a beautiful cafe that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time! The selection of treats is enticing from your first step into the cafe, but as you walk through the restaurant you're warmly welcomed into (allegedly) the only traditional Viennese cafe in Germany. We ordered the Maldaner breakfast, which includes a standard selection of meats, cheeses, bread and vegetables but is elevated by made to order eggs and fresh orange juice. The staff is friendly and attentive and even waited to bring our espresso until we returned from the restroom to make sure it was hot when it was served! I really enjoyed this bakery with a sit down tea room in back. It'll transport you back in time, when shops took pride in its atmosphere, from decor to service. Cakes are made perfectly, especially the ones with whipped cream (light & airy). I particularly enjoyed the hazelnut cream cake (highly recommend). Don't expect their cakes to be as sweet as in Paris, Vienna, or in the states. They definitely lean towards less sugar, similar to what you find in Japan. Instead of icky sweet, enjoy it as a lighter version to compliment your coffee, tea, or in my case...hot chocolate. I'm told it's one of the oldest bakeries. Definitely worth a stop, even if taken to go. After 4 weeks in this town, I've been to this bakery the most often. It's got a charm that newer bakeries lack. ps, Star cinnamon cookies sold in bags on glass case are definitely worth getting! I've had my eye on this place forever, and it definitely lived up to all I wanted it to be, with its turn of the century atmosphere and elegance. This is one of the nicest Konditerei in the entire Frankfurt area. They have an amazing selection of cakes and pastries. I've had most of the cakes and they are always fresh, never dry or stale as can be the case with some places with a large selection. The service has always been good as well- they are efficient and patient behind the counter helping you pick your cakes. We usually sit outside when possible; the outdoor seating area is nice, and inside they have nice old-school cafe decor. I think the cafe has existed in this location since before WWII. I like the decor, dessert presentation and some of the service here. It's Germany and in a very particular part of the country, so service is superficial and crappy. The food was okay, to say the least, and pricey for what it actually was. The experience was a bit underwhelming and uninteresting. If you like pretentiousness and want a bougie show, make your way out here when you're in Wiesbaden :) also, don't forget to visit the Steiff store here. It will be a cherry on top. Lol. read more

Had the worst experience at any cafe/restaurant ever in Germany here. The waitress was rude and impatient toward us (all Asians) but less so toward others (mostly Europeans). Café Maldaner is a Wiesbaden institution and we would not miss it for the world whenever visiting the capital of Hesse. It is like stepping back in time, to the days of gracious living in the coffee houses of Old Europe and the Belle Epoque. There is even a piano and a full-sized marionette dressed in a silk costume to set the stage. Sit outside in the summer and watch the world pass by on the traffic-free pedestrian Markstraße which leads down to the Market place and Schloßplatz. Take a look at the window displays before entering the revolving doors were there is a choice of three rooms on two floors, each with their own charm. It is certainly best to book a table, especially at the weekend. Pass the huge assortment of cakes and chocolates in the presentation counter on your left and with luck you will find a table with brocade sofa to sit at. Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. is wonderful and whatever you chose, it will be a delightful start to the day. Good value for money too. Our choice of scrambled egg and bacon with salad and bread roll was delicious, as was the other Maldaner Frühstück -- all three tiers of it! Three assorted bread rolls, cheese, ham, jam, honey, a boiled egg and butter with garnish was tremendous value for money too. We had several coffees, melanges, teas, a glass of Sekt (sparkling German wine similar to champagne) and three full breakfasts all for €50 including a service/tip. Unfortunately they have replaced their traditional Maldaner coffee and chocolate range with a milk-bar or Starbucks style machine, which is just not the same at all. The little jugs of milk used to have a "Hütchen" of whipped cream on top, but that has sadly been replaced by simple milk, another victim of globalisation fever. The traditional boullion with egg has also disappeared from the menu. Indeed running our eye down the menu, we decided breakfast and afternoon tea were the meals best partaken at Café Maldaner, with lunch a poor second. However all is not change for the worse. Part of the modernisation drive has replaced the extremely grumpy, slow and ill-tempered old waiters with friendly, professional youngsters who are efficient and quick to serve. They even smile! Quite a revolution! Accessibility is the only reservation we have. The toilets are upstairs and revolving doors are not wheelchair or zimmer-frame friendly. The charms of Maldaner are mostly lost on children, which is just as well because there is no space for pushchairs. Tea time or rather coffee time or Kaffeezeit has always been a special treat... The cakes are truly splendid and very seductive. The prices are commensurate with the ambience and the quality offered. And there are those who are easily lured into eating cake with their breakfast... But that is another story. read more

OH.MY.GOD! I am in love with this place. They have the most beautiful, lovely cakes around! I dragged my friend to this place because I wanted dessert and coffee. It's a very elegant place for a "cake shop" with white linen tablecloths, waiters in bow-ties and fancy tableware to boot. The clientele is definitely older but my friend and I didin't feel out of place. Most of the desserts were around 5 - 6 euros and the coffee was around 4 euros. This place is great to catch up with friends or go on a date if you live in Wiesbaden. Also, they didn't rush us since we actually lingered which I loved. Furthermore, it was around Christmas time last year and they had stollen bread. Although, stollen bread is famous in Dresden, they had quite a few which I snapped up to take home to my family! We had great, attentive service and the woman behind the counter patiently helped me choose the type of stollen bread and look over chocolates as well. I'll definitely come back and eat my way through their menu! read more

I LOVE this place. It's one of those places I have to go to every time I go to Wiesbaden. More because it's a tradition than anything else, although the decor and pastries are definitely worth it. It oozes classic and antique without being run down and worn out; which is so hard to find. Many times you see something from afar and it looks incredible, just to find that, when you get to the close up, it's worn down and faded. This is not the case with Cafe Maldaner. They definitely pay attention to the details both in that case and in the case of their beautiful pastries. Although I also feel that it's quite pricey, it's an experience in relaxing and enjoying a good cup of coffee with some beautiful desserts; which makes it a worthwhile treat every once in a while. They also serve soups and some sandwiches. I haven't had any, so I can't really vouch for their quality. read more

I went here with a group of girlfriends for a birthday. We all ordered the tiered breakfasts, they include incredibly delicious scrambled eggs, with a selection of meat and cheese. The service was not great, they forgot many items we asked for and barely paid attention to us. We also ordered the crepes to share, which was very good. I thought it was a bit overpriced and not very exciting. The restaurant itself is beautiful on the inside, but lacks real substance, I wouldn't come back. read more

Wow, what a great experience here. A bit of a language barrier issue initially, but once again, my strategy of smiling and being friendly always helps out. The ambiance in this place is amazing. When you walk in, you're in their bakery and cafe, then the back opens up to this amazing dining area with old school architecture and a grand staircase (that heads up the the bathrooms, by the way). Our waiter was amazing, and incredibly attentive. They do have a version of their menu in english. Three of us got the breakfast for two, and added a third. It comes with scrambled eggs, and this awesome three level tower they put down on your table with a variety of breads, salmon, cheeses, meats, butter, jams. It was fantastic. A fourth member of our party got the salmon toast I believe it was and she stopped talking during breakfast to enjoy it. It's liek a timemachine into another world :-) The waitresses and waiters are still dressed in black and white and it feels as if you are sitting on the couch of your granny. The stuff is friendly and even jokes around. Normally, we have breakfast there, which is good. But is there anything you can do wrong about scrambled eggs, rolls, sausage and butter? The coffee is okay ( not our favorite - very milky and foamy but that's because it is a Wiener Melange) but the soft drink are a bit pricey. Can't say anything about the lunch menu because we never tried it. We once tried the "house cake" but it wasn't our thing. We were a bit disappointed in this bakery after reading all the good reviews. To start with the good- the space is lovely, the cases are beautifully decorated and full of colorful sweets, the outside space is inviting and perfect for people watching. The place was very crowded on a Sunday afternoon, so we took ours with us. The service, while quick, was not friendly or helpful at all. Language barrier didn't seem to be the issue- moreso just being annoyed? So that was one star down. Prices were high, even for Wiesbaden standards, but it really raised our hopes for dessert that night. Which made us even more disappointed when we ate them. The apple pie was very good, but the rest was only so-so. Their house cake- the mocha chocolate- was fine, but nothing amazing. The wine cake was not good at all- we threw it away. And the petit fours were all mousse inside, no cake, and covered with an odd waxy fondant...Won't return. read more

Amazing place and great food *BUT*, two times I've been there I've had the honor to have the same waitress, she's an older lady with short brown hair and she's completely unpleasant. Both times I've had her she's gave us the wrong order, either she gave us the wrong thing or completely just didn't bring something and have had to re order the missing item and wait for it again. AND WITH THAT the item comes cold and when confronted with this she becomes argumentative and condescending. Both times that has happened. My girlfriend after this last trip has completely refused to comeback and if I I ever go back I will be very vocal about not having her as my waitress. Unfortunately she does not have a name tag so I can not name her directly. But my experience with other waitresses has been great and I'm giving it a poor star count on the hopes management will read this. But like I said before when the food is fantastic, hands down the best eggs I've ever had at a cafe or restaurant and the cake is absolutely angelic, so food is a solid 5 stars. read more
