Once you're finally in Nachtasyl, you settle in with your Czech beer and far from the trappings of haute civilization .... you plot the revolution. The smoke is thick, the beer goes down easily and the whole world seems ripe for changing. Then when you leave it's only a short walk to the shopping street Mariahilferstrasse and you are back in the consumerism of the 21st century and the revolution seems far away again. But your clothes still smell from the smoke of Nachtasyl and the revolution remains very much alive as you navigate the streets of Vienna. By the way, there is a Tagasyl (Day asylum) as well - directly next door but on the street level. It's also an atmospheric Czech hangout. Daytime just isn't night-time.

The place itself is quite small with only 7 or 8 tables to choose from and a fair amount of space at the bar to stand but don't be fooled. There is an amazing selection of beers here. Sprawling over 5 pages and including many of my personal favourite beers there is so much to choose from. I didn't count but I imagine there must be over 150 different beers here. Wow! Table reservation is available and it seems to be a good idea if you are going with a group of friends as standing at the bar leaves not too much room to chat and converse. There is a separate smoking section which is very rare in Vienna and a plus for the non smokers out there. The service is a little slow because of the sheer volume of people and the smallness of the place. There were only two servers there when I was there and probably 50 or so people. But I must admit that they are very, very good. They are attentive and organised, knowledgable and focused on the job. Taking orders 4 or 5 tables in advance and then delivering is really a great skill and a pleasure to behold! There is a smallish snacks menu available and from what I saw was really pretty decent. It helps to soak up some of the beer with something to eat. And now to the main event, the beers: There a few beers on tap as well as a few Austrian pils and Weissbiers to choose from but the focus certainly is on Belgium beers. For such a small place the beer menu has a great representation of Belgium beer types. Lambics, Blondes, Dubbels, Tripels, Trappists, Dark Ales, IPAs and more are all to be found here.
