Thankfully on the way up to town there is a handy hole in the wall at Calder services, an Esso garage situated halfway up the hill to Motherwell. As well as selling petrol and diesel (obviously) they have a handy shop which closes at 11pm, but you can still purchase through a little window after the opening hours. Pretty handy if you need a packet of chewing gum or a mars bar at 2am! The cashline here is convenient, but as with a lot of service station cashpoints it charges you £1.85 to lift your own money, which i always find a total outrage!

Located on a mini roundabout it is easy to divert into it on the way down to Peacock Cross, and equally easy to get into on the way up Wellhall Road. Comprising Air and Water, Car Vac, two Jet Washes and Automatic Car Wash, Shell is the perfect stopping place for a variety of motoring needs. Inside the shop is well laid out with nicely lit displays and a good variety of items for sale at reasonable prices. Staff are very helpful and friendly, though at times there is only one member of staff on which slows things down.

It sits at the Lanark side of the roundabout in Newmains and is open 24hr it is on average the cheapest or second cheapest for petrol or diesel, and it has a good forecourt shop for those household goods that you have forgotten to get before the shops shut (a lifesaver at times) and unlike the other petrol stations in Newmains free air and water, it also has a cash machine and well kept toilet facilities, and the staff on the whole are friendly and helpful and they are also quick to start the pump when you pull in unlike a lot of garages.

They do have a collectors card where you can save up points and redeem it against items or money of vouchers. Does take a while to collect enough for anything decent though. Best thing about garage is cafe. Good selection of sandwiches and snacks as well as plenty of hot and cold drinks available. Prices in the shop are good and lots of choice.

A 2L bottle of Irn-Bru costs £2.69 and a 600ml bottle £1.09. The same can be said for their sweets, snacks and crisps. Most are quite overpriced except for the odd offer (most recently 2 KitKat Duo's for £1). They stock a limited range of magazines, car care products, gifts (boxes of chocolates), but a large range of chocolate bars, snacks (including facilities to make pot noodles, hot chocolate) and a large range of flowers. Which although is the usual mixed bouquets aren't half-dead like most petrol stations and prices for these start from £3.99 for a carnation mixed bouquet. They stock a wide range of tabloids and some broadsheets as well as motoring magazines. A cash point is also available on site which is supplied by Abbey (free to use cash machine).

Have been coming here for years and have always had a great service. Price is really good as well (£5 for a wash) and they take their time when cleaning the cars. I'd noticed Foam and Away while I was wandering about, and just had to bring the car here, based purely on the name of course. A basic wash cost £3 and left the car shiny and clean. Nothing much else to say, but the name still makes me smile.

The car was nice and shiney after the wash and wax, real easy and quick for the price, only £5.50. I would go here again if I don't have time to do it myself again, the car wash is always fun as you sit inside watching the windows get all foamy, I am ver very easily pleased.
