We found a hair (see photos attached) in the Spicy Beef Salad! You tell me where you think it's come from! My croque monsiuer with its perfect cape of bechamel and drawer of grainy mustard could easily have been sourced from the backstreets of Paris. The toasted banana bread was a gooey, chewy, fluffy mouthful of childhood goodness. My only suggestion for improving this comfort zone is to invest in some proper cutlery and crockery. Cutting into toasted fare with picnic wear and drinking coffee out of paper cups does detract a tad from the romance of what it otherwise a very sweet new affair.

I've only tried the red velvet and double chocolate so far, but CPK offers a selection of flavours (including Reese's peanut butter), as well as custom cake pops if you fancy angry birds, ninjas or have your own design in mind. If you're after a gluten-free option, don't fret- they cater fot that too! While they only have one store in Auckland, they deliver nationwide, so no one has to miss out. Sharing the store with a cupcake shop, it was a baker's heaven. Not being from the North Shore I didn't particularly know the area very well, however putting the address into a GPS does the trick and gets you there perfectly (even though it may seem like you're getting lost in a residential area). The cake pops were very well presented and had quite a range to choose from. I had a chocolate raspberry cake pop and it was delicious! I was worried it would be quite hard, but it was lovely and moist with no signs of being over cooked. The cake pops are roughly $4 each. They also cater and would make a perfect birthday cake alternative for children. There is also a gluten free option. A win win situation. They also sell ribs , chicken and a variety of extras, but their pizza menu is where pizza to go really stands out. You can get a 5 dollar pepperoni pizza, or go all the way to an 8.90 "Gourmet" Pizza, which are actually suprisingly good for the price. They also chuck on heaps of toppings, not being stingy at all. Best of all, if you ring ahead just before they close they are happy to hold your pizza for you after hours. And they have spacies while you wait.

How they stay in business is a mystery without desirable stuff to buy. They're old and no longer seem to give a damn. I find it remarkable that they stay in business. Not worth the trip.

Martha's Backyard which of course is a play on words, (think Martha's Vineyard) has many American culinary favorites from candies, seasonings, sauces, cereals, beverages and snacks. I walked out with Cholula, Louisiana Hot Sauce, Lawry's Seasoned Salt, a pack of Lawry's Taco seasoning, mini Butterfingers and 2 boxes of Cap'N Crunch cereal for under $40.00.
