I've heard about this place but never had the opportunity to visit until Monday night. It was the perfect place to duck in for some warmth after visiting the Christmas market at Bellevueplatz nearby. It wasn't very crowded, so we had our pick of seats, and I settled into a comfy bench by the window. I liked the decor--kind of sparse, yet cozy and homey at the same time. At first, I was going to order a hot milk with caramel sauce, but then I decided to switch at the last minute to a cup of Maracaibo Clasificado 65% Grand Cru hot chocolate. Dark, rich, and decadent, it came in a ginormous mug and was a sweet way to warm up. 3 visits, 3 stars. Cakefriends was also situated in a convenient location relative to the Hotel Helmhaus. I visited 3 times (twice for a morning coffee and once for dinner and a glass of wine).Tucked just far enough up Torgasse, it's a quaint little spot for light bites, sweets, coffee or a drink off the main drag madness. While its quiet, this also means it misses the sunlight for most of the day, overshadowed by buildings. My first two visits: just fine! Had a cappuccino both mornings while starting my day perched at a nice table by the window. No complaints. Service was perfunctory, but fine. I returned for a light and easy dinner on my last night and enjoyed a glass of wine, small quiche and salad...all just fine, though easy to tell the quiche had been sitting somewhere for awhile, awaiting it's rightful owner. Service was slow and solemn. Strange, this place seems...unhappy. I'm not quite sure why. Not just European removed unfriendly, but...sad. I can't quite place a finger on it! The real reason for 3 stars. THE CAKE. I mean, it's called Cakefriends! The cake should be amazing, no? Unfortunately the "chocolate cake" I received was dry, lacking flavor and overall, very lackluster. The little mousse it was served with was by far the standout, I'd have rather had a bowl of that. I only ate half the cake. This really says something, because I LOVE cake. I'd certainly return for coffee (or maybe even the milkshakes they advertise), but I'd steer clear of the cake! I have met friends here a few times for lunch, but it's never going to be a place I suggest. Though it is convenient to Bellevueplatz, there are any number of other tasty places you could go for a nice lunch or cup of coffee. I went last Thursday with a group of five for a late lunch. Two of our group got there a few minutes before the rest, but they were asked about five times by the waitstaff if they wanted to order food, so they didn't wait for us before ordering. When the rest arrived, we ordered and food was brought quickly. I received the house soup and a veggie quiche - I didn't look to see what the soup was before I ordered, but it was quite good - perhaps a pea soup? The quiche was fine, and everyone else seemed pretty happy with their food. For all the hovering at the beginning of service, getting a waiter's attention for coffee and then the bill took forever at the end. Another reviewer mentioned that they found this place 'sad'... which is about right. It doesn't seem like the staff want to be there, and the decor isn't very cozy or encourage you to linger. read more

Of course, if a restaurant is called Cakefriends, you go here for the cake, but looking at our table neigbors salads, it seems like they also have a fantastic selection of savory items. When you order cake you get 2 pieces and can choose 2 different ones. Great option as you get to taste 2 different ones. Your cake comes with some kind of housemade whipped cream - I am not a fan of whipped cream, not at all, but this one was simply amazing and was a great addition to the otherwise slightly too dry cake. They also had an interesting suggestion in the menu: Have your cake with a glass of red wine ... I tried and it worked. Lastly, the waiters were very friendly. Placed an order online 5 days before desired delivered date and even sent an email notifying that I had place my order and the desired delivered date. I had been receiving responses but once I placed it I didn't hear back from them. Cake was not delivered and I ended up calling the shop. They didn't even know about my order even after submitting payment and sending emails. I don't know how this place is when visiting the location, but I would not recommend online ordering and services read more

Cute little place with some pretty good cakes. On the other hand, the place is super crammed, the service staff is stretched thin, and the prices are high even for Zurich. It's probably better to come when it's not crowded -- like during weekday afternoons. read more

Best thing here so far has been their hot chocolate, which is usually not so great in Switzerland. I know it sounds a bit ironic. Quiches are good and some cakes too. A nice quiet place at a great location. Nice service. read more

Little stylish coffee place. Often very crowded with twenty- to thirty-somethings. The espresso is among the best in town. Cake is served in tiny amounts, but well prepared and worth a try. read more
