Traveling between Savannah and Macon on Route 16 is one of those trips that I've always thought…read morehonestly to be a little boring - it seems about seventy-five percent of the traffic along this route is tractor trailer rigs hauling shipping containers to and from the seaport in Savannah. Taking this route will add time to my trip if I'm only look at the mileage, but my agenda is to try and avoid I-75 at all cost, experience has shown using that route negatively impacts the schedule being it's filled with lots traffic and delays caused for a multitude of reasons including construction delays and accidents. The trip between my home and Atlanta is a little over 450 miles and doesn't usually call for a fuel stop if I'm driving one of my daily drivers, but at 7.5 mpg the RV usually requires a stop being I don't like to go much lower than a quarter of a tank when traveling. At just under fifty-five feet with the Fiat in tow finding a fueling island to accommodate the RV without blocking traffic or putting it in a position that complicates exiting can be a little challenging since backing up an RV with a "toad" attached isn't recommended. After sitting in the seat a few hours longer than I wanted too the Grady Truck-stop sign was a welcoming sight - a chance to stretch my legs and an opportunity to fill up this girl gave me just the excuse I was looking for to take a break. A slight drizzle started just as I took the exit and climbed the hill to pull into Grady's, I was happy to see the large canopy covering the fuel islands as well as the well thought out entrance and exit configuration making it perfect so there'd be no need to plan a strategy to get back on the highway. I was a little taken back when I noticed the old school pumps that requires you to fill up before going inside to pay (for those of you that aren't aware, there was a time when there weren't "pay at the pump" options and you had to interact with a real person to do business I think we could use a little more of this). This baby hold more than a hundred gallons so when I latched the nozzle I knew it would take awhile. As the gallons clicked off I noticed an old trucker next to the entrance hitting a blunt, he nodded hello and I acknowledged it will a nod of my own - he proceeded to make small talk as the rain poured from the awning making the conversation a little one sided as the water crashed onto the concrete drowning out much of what came from his mouth. A porter came out with a push broom and guided the standing water away from the entrance just as the familiar sound of the pump shutting down at just over ninety bucks. The interior of the place was simple but ample, staffed and stocked with lots of necessities if you're a truck driver or live right down the road I guess - lots of chrome, cords and electronics on one wall, a few aisles filled with junk food, snacks in the middle and some essentials of course. The bulletin boards are always interesting, this one had a few thank you cards and odd job request and maybe a lost pet or two. The back of the property sets the grille, only a few tables and a kitchen in plain view. The employees were as friendly as family and thanked me for stopping in. It seems a lot of the big brand truck-stops could learn a thing or two from Grady but I doubt improving their staffs lives takes a precedence over profits. I definitely would stop in here again I don't think there's a better option on this stretch of highway...

I would rate it a three if the employees weren't so kind and helpful. I was passing through Savannah and had not made any reservations. It turned out every hotel in the area was booked. They all said they were full, so I called others who stated they were booked as well I went to the Garden Inn because it was close to the other hotel I was calling from, and they told me they were booked also I was making a few other calls before I went into a full-blown panic, and when I got off the phone, the employee had moved things around and could accommodate me. I've never been to a hotel/motel that worked toward helping someone. I go through there occasionally and can tell. You their one act of kindness has made a customer as long as I do near Savannah.

I booked a room through Expedia and tried to cancel it an hour later but the property owner, Kenny, would not respond to the phone calls from Expedia or me, and would not reply to my texts. I had to call the property four times - God bless Courtney's soul for being so kind and patient with me - to ask the receptionist (Courtney) to ask Kenny to please reply. This owner is disrespectful and completely indifferent to customers. He tells the employees to transfer any requests to him, and he simply ghosts the customer.

The king size bed was very comfortable! The staff was nice and helpful... Pro tip, pull on the shower faucet to turn it on, twisting it just adjusts the temperature! The breakfast was hot coffee, ceral, milk, yogurt, muffin, pastry, oatmeal which was perfect for a quick grab and go. The Shoneys is right next door and will actually deliver room service style to the hotel! When I'm back in Vidalia I'll be staying here

It's like you have known them forever. Once I mentioned I hadn't ate yet, and a resident came over with a tray of enchiladas. Someone gave me a handmade Hideaway figurine. My own family isn't this nice to me! You come here not knowing anyone, next thing you know, you're on the back of a golf cart in an RV crawl. Just wonderful guys- all of them. The friendliness is everywhere. I have not met one pretentious person in all the times I've gone. Everybody interacts with everybody. Not only that but the drive there is gorgeous. I particularly recommend RT 121. Green fields, pine trees, hardly any other cars. Just keep your eye on your speed ; ) There's something in every budget for accommodations. Access is tightly controlled so recommend having everything you need on coming in. It's to keep the riff-raff out, (but yet here I am?). You can still come in and out, but most people stay on property. I've left my stuff out many times and never give it a thought. Nobody is here that shouldn't be (they keep letting me come back?). It's easier getting everything settled online before arrival, including signing the online waiver, and booking your cabin, or camping space. There is a nominal $15/yr fee as well. The cabin's have a one time cleaning fee per stay. Even with the fees and the paperwork, the price is still reasonable. Knowing this up front made more sense. They do a lot of pot-lucks- bring something nice, they love that stuff. A lot of these guys can cook. ("Who made this and is he single?") They also have a take-out cafe by the pool. They usually have specials and everything I have ordered has been top notch. Keep an eye on the cafe hours, the cook wears a lot of hats on the grounds, so plan accordingly. They open and close a few times a day. They do not sell alcohol. It's BYOB, everyone often just contributes to someone's cooler. It's the perfect mix of quiet and serene and get out on the dancefloor when the sun goes down. As a staple of the larger campgrounds, I found that the Hideaway more than makes up for being toned down by the attributes I've mentioned. It doesn't hit you immediately your first time; just about the time you start thinking that it's scaled down, you realize that's the point, and that its just as much of a blast as the loud crazy campgrounds, if not better. It's not the size of the crowd or the volume of the music that makes a great weekend, it's who is invited to the party. And in all the times I have been here, even when the weather didn't want to cooperate, The Hideaway hits the mark every single time. An absolutely wonderful bunch of people. I give The Hideaway an enthusiastic FIVE STARS!
