Each of the three cave systems delves deep into the limestone hills; one system in particular stretching on for miles, although only a small portion is available for public exploration; the rest is either too narrow or unstable to support the casual spelunker. The rocky floors have been smoothed out for ease of accessibility, including wheelchair access (although it may be a little bumpy), and each system is lit by ambient white or yellow lights sequestered away among the nooks and crannies. Flashlights are provided but not required in most sections, which are awash with pale, spectral amber light. Each system is shorter than the last (the first being the most extensive, by far), the third being little more than a "lair" for the ever-changing predatory occupants that once inhabited it. Underground rivers, streams and waterfalls are abundant, and have crafted, over the aeons, sculpted some rather strange, unsettling or humorous shapes from the sedimentary rock. Although the caves are a tad "casualized" for my adventurous tastes, they are regarded as one of Britain's greatest wonders, and for good reason. Any cave-crazed crusader would be remiss to miss this inviting abyss!
