It is amazing how the Port handles all of the commercial water traffic in San Diego Harbor and at its marine terminals. The Port also maintains over 20 waterfront parks that are a pleasure to visit. My interactions with Port personnel has always been very nice. We love the Maritime Month celebrations in May and the opportunities for "behind the scenes" tours with Port guides. This year, we took a bus tour of the National City Marine Terminal and the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal -- the two main commercial operations. Our guide was one of the Port's wharfingers, one of the people responsible for day-to-day activities at the terminals. Very informative and enjoyable.

I have a…read morepersonal connection to MCRD San Diego because I recently had two family members go through boot camp. I come from a military family and have always had a deep appreciation for our military. It is such an honor and special moment to attend graduation here after not seeing or talking to your loved one for three months. Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego was built in 1919 and is located right next to San Diego International Airport (the other recruiting base is in Parris Island, South Carolina). MCRD is also home to a Drill Instructor's School and at times will house members of the U.S. Coast Guard. Thousands of Marine recruits are trained here each year. Those that enlist go through a thirteen-week training process in which the recruits are cut off from civilian world and must adapt to Marine Corps lifestyle. Towards the end of the training period, recruits are taken offsite for field training and must pass the 54-hour simulated combat exercise called the Crucible. After passing, they are officially Marines and can attend graduation. Even though it can be hard for a parent to let go of their child, they do some things for the parents to help with the detachment process. The recruits are not allowed to have cellphones or make contact with family, but they can write and receive letters. During boot camp, I always kept the training matrix hanging on my wall so that I would know what training exercise they were doing each week. They also have a Facebook group page where they will post photos of each company's training exercises. Graduation day is a special weekend when parents can have dinner at the Bay View Restaurant and meet their child's drill instructor. Then families are able to watch their new Marine march on the parade deck and see them for the first time. There is also a museum here at MCRD San Diego that focuses on the history of the Marine Corps. I enjoyed walking through it and checking out all of the different galleries and exhibits.

The moment I stepped in, I was greeted by dirt and sticky surfaces that made it clear cleanliness was not a priority. Everything in the room looked like it was trapped in 1985: a tiny, outdated TV, worn-out furniture, dingy carpets, and clocks that belong in a thrift store. There were exactly two USB ports in the room, and unsurprisingly, neither of them worked. If you're expecting modern amenities, you'll be sorely disappointed. Housekeeping? More like no-keeping. The civilian cleaning staff barely did anything. The shower was a disaster--the head was sticky, and there were long black hairs stuck to the ceiling and tiles, a surefire sign of carelessness. The toilet seal was leaking, adding to the room's overall neglected condition. The courtyards added to the experience, and not in a good way. You see, Marines frequent the area, and let's just say they don't keep it quiet. My nights were filled with the sounds of Marines doing Marine things--talking, singing, taking loud bathroom trips, and other shenanigans that echoed through the night. The thin walls made it impossible to escape the noise. If you want rest, peace, or even basic comfort, go somewhere else. This place doesn't provide it, and the experience left me frustrated and sleep-deprived. There are far better places to spend your money and actually feel like you're getting what you pay for.

Lots of historical architecture, including authentic adobe buildings, statues, signs, and themed shops and such. Each time I've gone here it's been lively, especially so during the holiday season with the decor and the live music playing in the main central square. Lots of photo opportunities and shops and such to peruse and look around. Easy to grab souvenirs here as well and depending on what you're looking for, there may be more than one shop offering it (cultural souvenirs and pieces). Great to shop for outdoor garden decor (little statues and wind chimes) too. There's also toy stores, a hot sauce store, a "Chinese" themed store which is quite funny to visit, and lots of spots to grab food too, sit down and dine in or casual take out. I personally like the churro and champurrado place when it's open. There's a couple restrooms here too, but can get crowded and a bit gross with the large volume of people visiting. Free house museums for self tours where you just walk through and read the little signs that they have, and sometimes there's historical actors as well, which is always a treat.

I've seen some employees wearing costumes from this era. I wanted a picture with them but they were walking in a hurry so I wasn't able to stop any of them. Free parking in a small lot, I think it has a tine limit though. There is plenty of free parking on the street, just make sure you turn your wheels toward the curb or you will get a ticket. The Park is small but well maintained. Meticulously manicured landscaping. Ranger on site. Restrooms are very nicely maintained but only open limited hours. At least you don't have to walk over to old town. I got to enjoy it on a nice spring Saturday morning. Enjoy the photos.

Wirh the Victorian Village the houses tell of the many people that have lived in the houses many of the houses have been here in early years of the 1900 and the pre 1900s when the city had the sounds of wagons. Victorian Village set on the hillside to where you drive into the back of the the street that goes past the Victorian Village. The grand views from the from the houses you can see out over the valley the view of the bay the ships would dock and unload the supllies of imports brought to the city.. Sitting near the Temple Beth Israel one of the many first temples that held tbe wood work designs showing the early work of early America. The Victorian Village gives you the first hand experiencevfor the Victorian Village is the homes of businessnlman and the first sherrifs of the town to home of the first mayor.
