It's a church…read more It's also one of the most beautiful things I've seen in Buffalo, but having said that there are a lot of beautiful old buildings in Buffalo. I was here a few weeks ago after eating at Nick's on Amherst and then stopping in at the wonderful Spar's Sausage Shop. It's very close to both on Amherst Street and totally dominates this portion of the skyline. It's absolutely spectacular inside and out. It's one of Buffalo's hidden gems because it is hardly a tourist attraction. It reminds me of Europe, and really adds a great deal to the West Side. Speaking of great deals, check out the huge portion of Chicken Souvlaki at Nick's on Amherst St (only open until 3pm), which is delicious and cheap. Definitely one of the prettiest churches in the area, but I'm not a church expert so what do I know. I did take a cathedrals class in University, and this church is so nice that it would have fit right in with all of those grand old (and much larger, but similarly old and beautiful) buildings of Europe. My disclaimer is that I'm not religious, will never be religious, and if I was going to be religious, I'd choose Scientology, because then I could look like Tom Cruise. Oh wait, he's really short isn't he? Never mind then. Skip the Scientology. Maybe I'd choose Hinduism since I like the sound of a god named "Buddha", and then be genuinely surprised when I find out that their god is not Buddha. I'd be like, "I can't believe it's not Buddha!"

Built to serve a largely Polish neighborhood, the first church on the site was built in 1888, with the current massive Romanesque structure following in 1914. It's a towering beauty from the outside, but the interior is truly a spectacular space that reflects a quality of artistic workmanship unparalleled in modern buildings. Bring your camera--and bring a few bucks to add to the donation jar. Buildings like this cost a lot to maintain, but they add immeasurably to the beauty of our city.

This place caught my interest. They hosted Ralph Nader when he was running, hosted a great fashion show with the Elmwood Village Association, they also hosted a soup kitchen. The church was so large, that they turned part of the building into apartments, in an effort to sustain the building. The apartments are unique and beautiful. The building is available for events and does a great job with them! Most importantly it is a loving and welcoming church. Always welcoming new people. They have a really great children's program during church, great chorus, and usually host coffee time following service. Services are at 10am. Check it out!

At 875 Elmwood, near Lafayette, is another large historic church complex. Built from Medina…read moresandstone its in the Roamesque Revival style, designed by the firm Lansing, Beierl and North, Shelgren in 1894. Its a large church, designed to hold 1000, built as the other churches were outgrown. It, like so many Buffalo churches, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its in Elmwood Village and has an active and eclectic (according to a friend who belongs) congregation. Ive never been here for a service, but Ive been here for a few meetings as they allow the use of their space.

This church sits on Parker near Hertel. Its also tied to St Marks on Amherst and Woodward. While…read morethey have separate parishes, they work together and are sharing resources. St Marks was founded in 1908. The current church opened in 1914 and the school opened in 1921. ** edited as I found out the school closed. However, its still a used facility as I see things happening there all the time. St Rose of Lima opened in 1925 to service the rapidly growing area on the other side of Hertel. The school opened in 1926, closed in the 2000's. As you walk the neighborhood near Shoshone Park and the former Holy Angels school you may come across this church and the grounds. The fish fry was very good with very generous sides of French fries, Cole slaw, potato salad and a huge slice of rye bread. The potato salad was very good, and not mayonnaisey. The Cole slaw was good, needed pepper. The bread was surprising as it must have been cut from a huge loaf. It was almost equal to two slices of regular rye bread, and very fresh. Only coffee and tea were complimentary. Soda, beer and water were for sale. There were pre-packed mini-muffins to take for dessert.

Whoever now manages the church/school is extremely insensitive to its neighbors. This church sits…read morein a residential area. However, during the summer, they hold a fund raiser outside, with a sound system, that goes well past the city's 10 PM noise ordinance cut off time. They have done this at least 2x, the police refuse to shut them down, and the church management doesn't respond to the concerns of the neighbors either before, during or after the event. Recently, without any warning to any of the neighbors with whom it shares a fence, it tore that fence down! The fence belonged to them, they had that right. But neighbors had relied on that fence for decades to keep young children and pets from escaping their back yards, and advance warning should have been given. Again, the church/school refused to return calls or respond to at least one letter from concerned neighbors. Finally, the church installed a new fence, illegally! Again, no response to neighbors. City code enforcement was contacted, and the church/school was required to fix the fence. They have partially done so, but not completely, although their deadline for doing so is fast approaching, It's so unfortunate that the church is behaving so poorly. They used to be a good neighbor.

Rev William Schreck established the parish of St Gerards to fit the spiritual needs of the area. As time went on, they needed a bigger place to worship, because more people were coming to the area. So in 1911 the current building was started. They did not actually finish it until the 1930's, but they used it starting in 1913. Its made from Indiana Limestone. Ive been here only once, on a recent tour of area historical sites. The open hours seem a little limited, but if you catch them, its worth a visit Bring a camera.
