I liked some of the teachings, then they show you the amended version of a Covenant that's not the Gospel. Works, obedience, and it feels wrong because it's by the letter not the spirit. There is a claim made about Salvation obtained by grace through faith. Then they push a scripture that produces a doctrine that reveals a hoop. Hoops that the Pastor uses for control by making his staff and aspiring members jump through them. Works! Every one I met here was more concerned about what someone else was doing. That's competition. In just a few weeks at Calvary Downey we knew that this was not a good experience for anyone seeking the true power of Salvation. Rigid, almost catholic vibe. read more

And the employees are so fun and nice to be specific Mark and Debbie they always have such a nice and happy attitude and gets your orders done right away. I love this church!!! This is my home church. If has everything from child care, bible study for all different groups and the Senior Pastor teaches the word book by book verse by verse. If you need help with your marriage or anything this is a full service church. You will get Jesus and His Love. read more

The preaching by Jeff Johnson or guest speakers are always excellent, but this is not a review of the preaching. It is about the chuch family. I came across a great deal on a case of paperback NIV Bibles and I decided I was going to donate half of them to the New Believer's Ministry. I took the entire case into the church, because I didn't want them soiled in my dirty trunk. I meet the gentleman running the ministry (Ralph?) and tell him of my intentions. I count out half of the Bibles and attempt to leave with the rest of the Bibles. The man running the ministry asks me where I am going with the rest of the Bibles. I repeat what I told him earlier, but he says "You brought those Bibles into the church. They are now church property". He then calls Security. Security arrived very quickly. I tell Security my story and he didn't even bother to ask the other man his version. Security said don't ever bring anything else here unless you plan on leaving ALL of it here. I told Security not to worry, because I will never donate anything else to this church. (I have my own ministry now. Whenever I see a NIV or NLT Bible selling for $2.00 or less, I purchase it and give it to believers in need.) I went to pick up my tithe receipt for income tax purposes. The lady at the desk treats me like trash until she sees how much I have given. All of a sudden she is treating me like a king. When I was studying to be a therapist, I had to observe a baby for 1 hour. I asked the head of the Baby Ministry if I could observe a baby with the parent's permission, of course. He tells me to march myself straight outside the church. I ask him if he wants me to leave and not attend service. He calls Security and I have to find out from Security that he wants me never to walk by the Baby Minstry ever again. If I ever want to walk down the hallway past the Baby Ministry I would have to exit the building 100 feet before the room and re-enter 100 feet beyond the ministry. Needless to say I don't attend services at this church anymore. read more

I wanted my child to come to this school because I heard it was a good school, but was denied to this school because I refused to change religion, and go to their church. I'm Catholic, and I go to church once or twice a week sometimes. So unless you're not willing to change religion and waste a $75.00 on an interview for your child then don't waste your time. Because these people are so misleading on their application! read more

My co-worker, best friend told me about his visit to this church, and how I needed to see and hear the Pastor there. I hadn't been to church since I was a little girl, but I really became interested (God calling) and went to see why my friend was so excited about. Needless to say I was saved there, and could not get enough Bible teaching, sitting at the feet of Pastor Jeff Johnson. Pastor Jeff (a former hippie) teaches the Bible, Chapter by Chapter, Verse by Verse in a way that gives you a real thirst for God's word. With an incredible school and several Ministries, you will grow as a Christian and truly feel God's Love throughout the campus, and I can't even scratch the surface of what this church provides. I attended their "New Hope Breakthrough Parenting" class. I loved: * The video series they use "Parenting is Heart Work" is easy to understand and entertaining * Their approach to parenting: "Parenting Gods Way" is clear and the best way to raise kids * Listening to God's word during the middle part of the session, * Wisdom, encouragement, and kindness of the trainers (Diana and Christine), * Free child care is provided * The cost is only $25!! It is 12 weeks long, 6:15 to 8:45 on Tuesdays (English sessions). My attendance to this parenting class has been a blessing to our family, who 3 months ago was experiencing the toughest moments ever, due to our ignorance and weaknesses. In a heartbeat, I'd recommend Downey Calvary Chapel's "New Hope Breakthrough Parenting" classes to anybody who wants a happier home. read more

I started going here because it reminded me a little about the one I went to in NYC. But I find before COVID-19(with one exception of a lady and her husband I met at their cafe), the people are biased. The tattooed woman would ignore me for no reason at all when I would go to buy breakfast, and she doesn't do it to others. Did I do something to offend her? Also, the lady at the bookstore wasn't helpful about taking my offering for I couldn't attend Sunday service for I had to work the election. Yet, I still remember to bring it in an envelope( I ended up giving it to another lady, who was nice to keep it. There have other "meanies" in there, but it will take a longer review. The services, sometimes, can add some chutzpah. Please allow us to locate the biblical verses for you go too fast. I prefer the NYC one better, but I move out there to be with family and it's close to home. Such potential but still a long way to go. read more

This church has an amazing investment into the community. They are a solid biblical ministry that offers a place for everyone to participate and grow. Most of my review here is what this church IS NOT.... because there is so much garbage and ignorance in churches today that are fueled only by preaching as a form of entertainment and show on the stage. Calvary is not a charismatic church. Cc is not a money begging church. Cc is not a topical focused preaching ministry. Cc is not miracle crusade tent revival type of charismatic ministry that has people running around saying God spoke to them to tell you something that no body else knows. CC is not Joel Osteen, nor Benny Hinn like whatsoever. CC Is Christ centered, bible teaching ministry, who in fact believes in the spiritual gifts, while not making them for the use of entertainment or show. Some charismatic church folks I used to know would call Cc Luke chapel as in "Luke warm". Obviously these folks are not driven by the depth of Scripture itself, but by the need to be entertained in an circus church environment. I'm not saying all charismatic people are like that, but most of the ones I've come accross, tend to have less interest in doctrinal truths, and seem to be always looking for a supernatural experience, even if the experience is unbiblical. read more
