We found Calvary SD after an exhaustive search to find a spiritual home/family for our autistic 5 year old child. We are Christians who love the Lord, but many churches (even churches with robust children's ministries) were not a good fit for our child. She struggles with noise and crowds, and needed a special needs ministry that accommodated/supported her sensory related needs. It was hard as a mother who wanted my child to experience a spiritual family/community and learn about the Word of God-to keep experiencing spaces that felt so alien and overwhelming for her. It also pained me to watch my child not know how to interact socially with her neurotypical peers, and experience Sunday mornings/church settings as spaces of exclusion, rather than as a house of God. I wanted my child to feel the love of God in all of its splendor-in a way that made sense to her uniquely beautiful wiring, and that she would be surrounded by believers who would love her and her autism. Not that she is defined by this diagnostic label-but rather, that she would be sheltered in a spiritual/family home that allowed her to be uniquely, entirely, and unapologetically herself-and experience the love of God from people who "get it' and the autism parenting/autism journey. Moreover, we were seeking a church that was biblically based and a preacher/teaching staff that did not water down the Bible. Or use the pulpit as a platform for political divisiveness. It makes us deeply uncomfortable when a pastor tells me who to vote for (even if I would have voted for this candidate anyways)-or when the pulpit is used to malign or judge people who live or think differently. What I love about Pastor Phil Metzer is that his sermons are deep, nuanced, and biblically sound-and he delivers his thoughtful messages with love, humility, and a posture of servanthood, rather than one of authoritarianism or judgment. My husband was a minister, also. For over ten years, he was a minister in a different denomination/geographic region, and is fluent in Biblical Hebrew and Greek. He supported people in biblical translation and has a PhD in the Hebrew Bible. So, he's actually very discerning as to when a pastor is delivering a message that waters down the original biblical text and its cultural/historical context. My husband is also constantly impressed with Pastor Phil's messages. He's deep, thought-provoking, and doesn't provide easy answers to life's hardships and question marks. Moreover, I am beyond grateful for Pastor Phil's lovely wife, Joy Metzger. When I was going through a really hard time in my life-she listened to me for over an hour with an open, loving heart. I've had painful experiences of people not knowing what to do with my trauma history-and people, even very well meaning, loving Christians, would provide me with curt answers and platitudes about being grateful, forgiveness, or saying that God will take care of me-when I was sinking under the weight of so much pain. When my second child had a medical crisis-Joy was there. Joy oversees the "Better Together" special needs children's ministry, and she is a woman of boundless compassion and tenderness. She has prayed for our family constantly, and her faith, commitment to prayer, and her effusive love has touched my heart throughout our journey here. I want to thank Casey Glass, the "Better Together" volunteer and buddy for my child. Casey is an amazing woman (who also happens to train navy seals, not joking). She trains our special forces & also happens to be the best friend/buddy of a 5 year old with autism who loves Jesus, loves Casey, and loves bugs. I wound find Casey looking for and collecting bugs with my daughter and she has checked in with me repeatedly. Casey for President! We love you, Casey! We love you, Joy!!! You two ladies have been so supportive, beautiful, lovely, understanding, and helped my family in countless small and big ways. I also want to thank the very sweet Edith Murillo, who has also supported/served as a buddy, to our daughter. Edith is such a kind, genuine, and loving soul-and she told me that she is praying for my daughter. When she waits by the church for my kid, and embraces her-I am reminded of how blessed we are to have found a church with members who live out the love of Christ each and everyday. We are moving soon out of the area. Otherwise, I honestly would never leave this church. My husband and I said that we will be so sad to go-because it means no more Sundays at Calvary SD, and no more incredibly unique classes like the "Theology of Suffering" (a very deep, sprit filled class for the Christian who wants to praise the Lord in the midst of the storm) by the very gifted Pastor Jeff. BTW-some of the earlier reviews that are negative about the lead staff-the staff has since changed. I don't mean to dismiss your real experiences-but just making a note of this. read more

I love this place! Many years ago, we were serving at another church and something occurred that we could not look past or continue to serve being aware of it. We went to EVERY major church and other community ones in San Diego county. Many tried too hard to "recruit" us. Others just didn't feel right, but when we arrived at Calvary SD, there was a welcoming peace and so much activity for the kids and adults alike... No pressure or frowning attitudes, just nice welcoming folks and great Bible Teachings too. If you want to do more, they have various classes, Mens Ministry, Women's ministry, Espanol Ministry, Children's Ministry and all kinds of opportunities to serve too. Lots of great food too! I didn't attend this church under the previous Pastor so I can't speak into what this church used to be like (anytime before 2017) but I would love to share what it's like attending here now. Right away I felt welcomed in. I'm in my 20s and got plugged into the young adult's group pretty quickly and love the group of friends I've gained. Since the new pastor took over, they've redone a lot of the look of the church and it definitely feels younger than when I first started attending. Everything is really modern - the only thing is they still have pews lol. But honestly, I don't mind that as much anymore. It was just surprising when I first walked in. I love the way the new pastor teaches - super biblical but also doesn't make people feel like they've been bashed over the head. They are challenging messages that are full of love and really make you examine the way you love God and how you treat others. He even addresses topics that most pastors, unfortunately, won't touch (like racial and cultural issues) from a biblical and compassionate perspective. It's refreshing to be under a pastor that still has hope for humanity and doesn't write everyone off. For Covid, they were online for a while and put out some cool content. But we're back in person now and they're following the state guidelines for masks and distancing. They seem to be doing a great job with all of that, I've always felt safe. read more

Wow! This church is absolutely full of love and the Spirit of the Lord! From the first moment of praise being sung to the final prayer of the study, I did not cease to worship! I cannot really comment about the other 1 star review but only that seeker-friendly individuals want to see what the church can do for them, but here - after attending, I ask myself what can 'I' do for the Lord! If you want to hear what the the Bible says, this is the place to go. And the chances are, you might get offended. A true church doesn't always leave you w/ a happy go lucky feeling. What's taught is the Word of God through the Bible. It's a non denominational church (meaning whether you're Christian, Catholic, Lutheran..any belief in Jesus Christ as Savior & Lord) that teaches Jesus Christ through His death on the cross as the only way to heaven. So it would make sense that a Christian based church is conservative. It also makes sense that in a church teachingJesus Christ as Lord, there will be negative outlooks on religions like Buddhism. Why would a Christian church find any positivity in a religion w/o J.C.? And for me, if a pastor is going to make a claim on something, I want to see him back it up with scriptures, that way I know it's not his personal opinion. In the Bible, there are many verses that speak against homosexuality (ex.1 cor.6:9-11) so for a church to be against it, is right on target with the Word of God. Long review, but to sum it up....Calvary Chapel teaches Jesus Christ through the Bible & what it says. If you're looking for a thought provoking lecture, or a talk on becoming a better you, you will be missing the point. read more

This school popped up and I need to review! My two children (3 and 2 years) attend the preschool here and they love it! We love it! It has been great for their transition and honestly the staff has been very attentive. My oldest daughter loves her teachers like they are family and my youngest daughter went from extreme anxiety at separation to running at her teachers with open arms. As for the church, my husband and I went once. It was more traditional in setting and not as upbeat or "young" in their sermons as we liked. We like the openness and relatable feeling but did not get it. We have been debating going back because we probably missed something since the school is so awesome. Our experience was not cult-like as some other reviewers had mentioned. Our daughters have been here for over 6 months and while it is a bit more pricey, you can't beat the security and curriculum. read more

Pastor Bryan teaches straight out of the Bible verse by verse. The Bible was written by God fearing men who were inspired by God's Holy Spirit exactly what to write. Even though it was written by different writers at different times and put into 66 books, it is infallible and absolute truth from God that cannot be changed. Hebrews 4:12 declares: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. This is why when any pastor /preacher quotes out of the Bible directly, there will be many that will be offended at the truth, others will react with Godly sorrow, which leads to repentance and a turning to Christ, the only one who can remove our sins, save us from judgement in hell and give us his everlasting peace and joy. BE VERY CAUTIOUS about going to a church tha is not preaching truth from the Bible and not Christ centered: you will be misled! This pastor and staff preach from the Bible and are Christ centered. If you are sincere and looking for life's meaning and truth, you will learn it here and be blessed! I had some bad experiences with some of the people in the young adult community here. They seemed just like the world, very territorial, extremely judgmental, and a little hateful. I do appreciate the sermons, but they are kinda like glorified Bible studies. You can learn a lot about the Bible from Bible studies, though. I don't think it's terrifying. I think that it's a good church. Pastor Brian has a good message that really makes you think about your relationship with Christ. I think that Richie C. just wanted to write a bad review. I've never seen anyone stand in the dark praying, although the congregation does pray a lot. But, isn't that what a church is suppose to do? Calvary Chapel reads through the Bible chapter by chapter, verse by verse. I love Pastor Brian's bible study. He isn't afraid to preach the Bible like most pastors are. We have been to many churches throughout our lives as we move alot with my job. All I can say is "what a great church." This was the third church we tried in Chula Vista and is now our home. The people are friendly and welcoming, especially Dan the usher. The music worship helped us focus on our relationship with God and the sermons come straight from the Bible with nothing added or subtracted. The pastor has been going verse by verse and this seems to help us actually learn the bible with no hidden agenda other than honoring Jesus and the Bible. When I travel on business, I have been able to listen to the sermons on my phone and my wife watches the sermons on the computer when she cannot make it. The children's ministries have been a wonderful blessing to our children. If we stay much longer in Chula Vista, we will likely send our children to the school as well. My visit was overall positive. I don't want to bash this church. I think they do a great job over all. but I want to provide feedback on a couple things did stand out to both the pastoral staff and 1. The place was so casual, maybe a little too casual. Everyone, including the pastoral staff were wearing jeans. I was brought up with the concept of "Sunday Best". Church shouldn't be a fashion show but your clothes should reflect the sanctity of the holy ground , after all since church is God's house. Much of the congregation wore tshirts and some wore flip-flops. Being in an upper-middle class neighborhood, I was a little surprised. The pastoral staff wore the same. It's hard to take people seriously when they look like they don't care. I guess this is more a critique on the carefree direction of our culture, religious life included. 2. I wouldn't call this church non-denominational for various reasons but it does have the underpinnings of a bible based Christian Church. I have no problem with churches speaking about God's word but I'm left with a bad taste when other denominations and religions are insulted in the process. On my particular visits, other christian denominations like Catholicism were bashed along with negative things said about Islam. It's one thing to disagree about religious points but it was a little distasteful and unnecessary in my opinion. God chooses his winners. No need to sling mud. read more
