Dr. Knapp is a god-send! I have been miserable the last 5-6 years. I couldn't breathe, was coughing constantly, couldn't lose my baby weight because I'd go to the gym and be wheezing and have to stop. Probably worst of all were the constant sinus infections, 5-8 infections each year. I was always on antibiotics--the last infection took me through four different antibiotics and none would help. I was referred to Dr. Knapp's office a couple months ago, and he went through my CT scans, did an exam, and determined the root cause of my problems: small cavities, infected tissue that no medication would help, deviated septum, and just very small airways. He gave me lots of options, and also mentioned surgery. I have heard how awful sinus surgery is, but he told me that while he can't guarantee it to cure 100% of my ailments, that it would make my life significantly better. So, I went in a month ago and had turbinate reduction (he took an inch off from one cavity!), removal of the infected tissue and opening of my passageways, as well as a septoplasty. A month after the surgery now, I feel like my entire life has changed. I haven't coughed once! I used to stay up all night coughing, every night. The recovery has had some pretty disgusting parts, but I can't tell you how amazing it is to be able to breath. I only had dissolvable packing, which I heard is the worst part of the recovery, and no bruising at all. He's a miracle worker, and his staff is fantastic: his nurse was always available to me, (he even called me twice on the phone, which I have never heard of a doctor doing before), and his billing staff worked diligently to get my stubborn insurance to cover the cost. Another reassuring point is that I see an amazing doctor for my asthma and allergy issues, and he and Dr. Knapp told me the same things about treatment, ailments, recovery, without ever even talking to each other. Extremely disappointed with the service I DID NOT receive! Out of my busy work day, I make time to drive 30 min each way from Eastside to Seattle, pay ~$5 for the 520 toll, pay $6 for parking, get there on time. Wait for 5 minute to speak with receptionist who was on the phone. I allowed 15 prior to my appointment time for check-in as it was instructed. Although I had received a form to pre-check-in online (which I do so spending 10-15 min). I wait in the doctors office for ~40 min. Nurse stops by and apologizes that the Dr. is running behind but should be another 5-10 min. At this point, I had been sitting in the reception area for 45 minute, no sign of being able to see the doctor. I had to leave since I had other commitment later that evening. I LEFT their office WITHOUT GETTING TO SEE THE DOCTOR DUE TO SCHEDULING MESS UP! I had high hopes due to other positive reviews here, but my experience was VERY POOR. read more

Calvin Knapp is simply one of the best ENTs you'll ever meet. I found Dr. Knapp from online research and I'm very happy that I chose him to do my septoplasty. He is great with communication & comes across as very sincere. He laid out my options for me and gave his recommendations. His method doesn't involve packing that needs to be extracted. I just had to rinse/irrigate a couple times a day. He was so gentle and thorough and I haven't had one sinus infection since! Is there anything else I can say that hasn't already been said? Actually, there is, and this is no joke. Dr. Knapp is the ENT that other doctors send their family members to see. In fact, I was referred to him by a doctor client of a lawyer at my last job. When that doctor said that he sent his own wife to Dr. Knapp, I knew I was in good shape. You know what? He wasn't wrong. I have struggled with sinus problems all of my life. Dr. Knapp is the third ENT I've seen over the past decade. The first two were excellent, mind you, but Dr. Clark retired and Dr. Makielski's clinic didn't take my new insurance. When Dr. Knapp entered the room, it was immediately obvious that he genuinely cared and really wanted to help. He sent me for a CT (on-premises, no less!) which enabled him to quickly determine what the problem was, that no amount of antibiotics would fix it, and that I would be needing surgery again. On the day of surgery, Dr. Knapp came up to my hospital room late at night to visit me and see how I was doing. Since then, yes, I've gotten the odd head cold, but nothing like the multi-month debilitating sinus infections and awful, nasty headaches that had bedeviled me every winter for most of my life. I had six or seven follow-up appointments and everything has been great. Know what else was great? His operative report was very pro-me. It said that I had experienced recurrent sinus problems which "can be debilitating." So true. When other doctors only want to throw more drugs at the problem, or suggest that you're faking, Dr. Knapp actually wants to, you know, do something. What a concept! And, as stated above, he advocates for his patients by saying that, no, the patient is not faking and that yes, the patient actually needs help to get better. Nurse Tera is another reason to see him. She is truly a gem, so very kind and maternal in her manner. Last, but not least? The chair. When you go to your visit, he will seat you in a gorgeous, old-school, red leather and chrome barber chair. If your sinuses have been giving you hell, don't suffer any longer. I do think it is odd that doctors are on Yelp. But, since Dr. Knapp is being reviewed here, I must pile on. I had a childhood accident which left me with injury to the right side of my face. Unfortunately, I became "used to" some of the problems I had over the years. I wish I had met Dr. Knapp sooner. A series of unfortunate events led to me to a place where a person in my life, Dr. Jennifer Melville, did some research on my behalf. She asked every doctor she knew, every nurse, all the PA's which ENT was the best in Seattle. Dr. Knapp's name came up over and over again. I am so thankful Dr. Melville did this searching around on my behalf. Without going into too many details, this is the doctor that other doctors would go to, or send their kids to see. My surgery was two months ago, and I feel so amazed that I even went about my life with all those problems! The whole staff at his office is great, the front desk, the nurses, his assistants. I saw two surgeons before making my decision, and Dr. Knapp was the clear winner. I was told I should consider the other surgeon because she was a "conservative cutter." No, she was inexperienced and trying to do as little as possible. I had a complicated case. While I didn't have clear-cut repeat sinus infections, I had chronic, low-grade sinusitis, congestion, and puffiness around my eyes and nose. No nose spray ever worked. Then I found out I had sleep apnea on top of it all. Many times doctors simply remove part of the lower turbinates (structures in your nose that swell up to fight infection, but are sometimes just too big anyway) and straighten the septum so that the CPAP machine used for sleep apnea can work as well as possible. But I needed a lot more help than that. If you can't breathe through your nose while you sleep, you open your mouth, and then you snore and your tongue falls back and then you get apneas. For some people it's not their nose, it's their tongue or jaw or even their body weight (you have to do a lot of lifting when you're inhaling on your back). For me, it was my ethmoid sinuses (the ones between the eyes) where all the trouble was. The first major improvement was no more swelling/puffiness around my eyes and nose -- and that was noticeable just days leter. Five weeks later I am OFF the CPAP machine. I didn't just have to lower the pressure, I don't need it anymore, period, and I'm more alert in the mornings than I've ever been. Dr. Knapp is also extremely friendly, personable, and will answer any questions. And Swedish hospital is a great place for surgery. read more

So far, so good. First of all-i've seen 2, count em'- yes....2 ENT's over my right ear issue. It's been a long haul and I'd almost given up. Then I realized, this November will be the start of my 3rd year and my ear is still jacked up. I can't have that. Do you know how hard it is to get silly putty out of your hair?! And btdub, I cannot tell you how un-sexy a swimming cap is. I yet again yelped me some recommendations for the best ENT in Seattle. This office is truly a gem. I'm still in the process of getting my ear stuff worked out but in my one visit so far, I have a TRUE diagnoses, got some prescribed drops that will neutralized my lobes and drum and there is hope on the horizon that one day-I might actually be able to dunk my head under water...say whhhaaaatttt. I've never been more excited for my next Dr. appt. I will be seeing Dr Polaskis in the same office for my follow up. OH and the technology they use here is pretty cool...I even got to watch a micro-camera go into my ear canal and saw my very own ear drum (or more accurately, where my ear drum is as you can't actually see THROUGH the infection zone). It was rad to watch him pour solution down my ear and match up that sizzle sound to a live visual as to what was actually happening in there. Though it sounds like a bunch of little worker men hammering away in my lobes, turns out-nope, no little guys in my ear drum.... read more

I value your time just as you should value mine, especially since I had to leave work early to be on time to this appointment. I had a problem breathing out of one side of my nose ever since I can remember. I went to Dr Knapp after consulting another ENT doctor. He gave me honest feedback about my deviated septum and told me that I would see a huge increase in my breathing should I have the surgery. I went through with it about a month ago and everything he told me was right. Some days are better than others but let me tell you, the good days are AMAZING! I am like a whole new man now! The surgery was only supposed to take 45 minutes but he worked on me longer because he said it was worse than he thought. Apparently "ear nose and throat" does not necessarily mean ear AND nose AND throat. Calvin Knapp might be an outstanding sinus surgeon, but he has not been an effective ear doctor for me. I recently began to experience pain and ringing in my left ear. After taking a battery of tests and then waiting an hour and a half in the waiting room, Dr. Knapp took approximately three minutes to dismiss it as cumulative chronic tinnitus and send me on my way. But the pain persisted, and so did I. Today, after three months of visits and telephone calls, and four courses of two different antibiotics (during which I experienced limited initial relief but then a full return of my symptoms), Dr. Knapp finally recommended that I see one of the "ear doctors" in the office. I wish he had suggested that three months ago. However, I understand that this unfortunate experience is my responsibility, for not choosing the right doctor in the first place. I based my decision to see Dr. Knapp on online reviews such as the ones on this site. I recommend that one take all of them, even this one, with a grain of salt. read more

I will never know if Dr. Knapp is as good as the many high marks he has received on this type of forum. And that is unfortunate for me, and for his professional reputation. The reason for that is the grossly incompetent, careless, and negligent operation of his office. The contact I received via phone responding to my online inquiry seemed, at first, friendly and personable. After many calls going unanswered or even returned, I still gave the benefit of the doubt. But, when I was "ghosted" by the office after I was told "I'll call you within an hour whether or not we got the fax from your doctor," I couldn't deny it any more. My local doctor told me that they tried faxing their referral and notes to the number I was given, but with no success. They tried calling his office with the same result; no answer, no response. Perhaps it is a good thing for both Dr. Knapp as well as any possible future patients that he is retiring in June. This type of shoddy customer service is the sort of thing that ruins a business. The amount of stress this has caused me is unacceptable. I think the sooner Dr. Knapp takes down his shingle and makes room for another doctor's office to fill the gap, the better it will be for sinus patients everywhere. read more

Everyone who says Dr. Knapp is a god-send is spot-on! A little over a year ago, my nose was accidentally broken. I put off diagnosing and treating it, but I knew what was wrong the very moment it happened: deviated septum. You see, half my lifetime ago, I had the same thing happen. Subsequently, I suffered from about 4 sinus infections per year, and countless migraines. 7 years ago, I discovered my deviated septum was the cause of these issues, and decided to have surgery to fix it. I wasn't promised a cure. However, the surgery cured my migraines and sinus infections for 6 years - until my nose was broken again. In 2005, my septoplasty surgeon was a doctor back in Texas. Since it is a small world, Dr. Knapp actually knew my former doctor! He even commented on what great work my previous doctor had done in my adenoids - before he even knew who my previous doctor was! Before my first surgery, I had heard nightmare stories of people having septoplasty done way back when. Previously, they would pack the nose with giant cotton wads, and you had to breathe through your mouth for the first week or so. I was assured that doctors had abandoned those old methods since it could lead to infections and other issues. Let me just say that first surgery was *rough*. Recovery took about 2 weeks. I needed assistance getting to the bathroom for the first few days. I couldn't fathom even chicken broth for days. Pain levels were astounding. I looked like someone has beat me. My nose swelled up to epic proportions, and I could barely open my eyes. The irrigation and bleeding were quite miserable to deal with. My poor skin became so irritated from the gauze and tape stuck on my face for 2 weeks. My previous doctor also used these long, flexible plastic breathing channels. They were a little longer than my middle finger, and they had a half-dome tube down the middle of it. Those things sat in my nasal passages for about 3 weeks, and they caused some serious misery. It hurt to even open my eyes that first day! When he took them out, good LORD it felt like giving birth through my nose! Worst of all, it took an entire YEAR to get feeling and movement back in the tip of my nose! Fast forward to last year, and I went to see Dr. Knapp for my official diagnosis. I decided to postpone surgery due to work conflicts. Since I had already been through the procedure before, I didn't want to miss another 2 weeks of work to recover from surgery. That was silly since it meant I suffered from more sinus infections over the course of a year! When I finally had Dr. Knapp do the procedure, it was simply the best! My recovery time was only a few days! He doesn't use those horrible breathing channels. Rather, he uses dissolvable packing. I could actually breathe through my nose immediately after surgery. I firmly believe that method alone saved me a world of misery! This second time around, I had minimal bruising on my cheeks, minimal swelling, and I could actually open my eyes! Drainage and bleeding we're minimal. I did take it easy with soft, non-spicy foods for the first week just to be safe. I could feel and even (slightly) move my nose the same day of the surgery! The procedure was light-years better than the last time! Dr. Knapp took the time out to answer any questions I had. He actually personally called me the evening of the surgery to check on me. After seeing him for sinus infection #4 in 1 year, he said "You really need this surgery!" He knows his stuff, and his staff was very attentive and responsive with any and all my questions. Simply put, this guy is the best of the best. Trust me, I have great comparison evidence to prove it! read more

Dr. Knapp is the best ENT I have ever had and the only doctor that I can safely say I completely trust with my healthcare. What I enjoy most about his approach is that he genuinely listens. Where I've had other doctors blow me off and tell me I'm overreacting, he has gone above and beyond to ensure that my concerns were addressed. I've also had times where I challenged his diagnosis, and I'm glad I did because he was able to explain it in multiple ways and always wanted to make sure I understood the rationale behind the decisions made regarding my healthcare. I'm hoping that I won't have sinus problems forever but as long as I do, Dr. Knapp is the only doctor I will be seeing. read more

Edited to add later Post-Surgery info: Still glad I did the surgery as I'm breathing better than I ever did before and snoring is not like it was. Not going to lie, a few days after surgery it was rough- as the congestion hits and you can't breath at all for a bit there- but that's just part of the process. After 8 days, I started feeling better and better. I'm 17 days out now, and feeling really good. Still need to take it easy in some respects, and have mild soreness- but don't even need tylenol to manage it. Neti pot, and I'm good! Nursing staff (5/5)- super quick to help me when I had questions/concerns Dr Knapp (5/5) - took after hrs call and was super helpful ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edited to add Day of Post-Surgery Review: Dr Knapp is amazing. Would give him more stars if I could! Just had my septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery earlier today. I have NO bruising, hardly any swelling, my pain has been perfectly managed, my nose looks better than before (before it was slightly crooked with a bump from an accident), the changes are subtle and natural looking. I honestly can't believe how good I feel. I've read horror stories of packed in noses- no packing here! Just a few stitches deep inside the nose. He even called this evening and chatted with me about 8 minutes to make sure everything was going well, and to answer my questions. I am stunned this has gone so very very well. The Negative: - the front desk has no voicemail 1/5 - Office forgot to give me my RX 2/5 -I was in there for 3 hours 2/5- some of this couldn't be helped, but that's simply too long. -The front desk- 1/5 They are well meaning, but dropped the ball in multiple ways for me. a) I went back inside to check on my RX moments after checking out- She disappeared for a very long time to see if there was a script for me in the back I could take in to the pharmacy- After a while I found the address of the pharmacy and gave this information to a girl at check in, so the RX could be called in. The RX was never called in and the nurse was never informed of this. b) I was on hold for 25 minutes when I called them back later that day about the RX- for 15 minutes I was #1 in their queue. This was after 4- so I think they just were hoping I'd hang up and they wouldn't have to pick up. c) Wait times- I waited over an hour beyond my appt time (not including paperwork time I arrived early for) before being ushered to a room. The front desk told me there would be a 15 minute delay, that turned to 30- then was not updated again. I don't knock them for the wait time (just means the patients are getting more hands on time with a thorough doctor, usually), as much as how the estimates seemed to be off and I wasn't updated. I don't grade down the doctor because of office problems, as I'm willing to put up with that sort of shenanigans if I'm getting good care. read more

I went through a brutal surgery of sinus surgery, turbinate reduction, nasal bone grafting and a septoplasty in conjunction with a tonsilectomy (that another doctor did) and as brutal as it was I would do it again in a second. I was referred to Dr Knapp by a sleep study professional in the area. Dr knapp is personable and professional. His staff is wonderful and friendly yet professional. He performed my nasal and sinus surgery. Surgery was performed across the hall from his office. Recovery went well and the surgery was a success. I went to see Dr. Knapp because I was at my witts end with my sinus issues. I was willing ot do anything!! To be honest, I was always fearful of seeing him because he's a surgeon and I was sure he'd tell me that was the only solution. We all know surgeons can often be on their 'surgery warpaths' and feel this is the one true way. Come to find out, that fear about Dr. Knapp wasn't needed at all. He is the most genuine doctor. He really takes his time to try to help you and set you on the right course. He said that my issues sounded so much like allergies, he didn't feel surgery would benefit me as much as testing would. So his allergist tested me and found nothing with the 'regular' skin test. She then did the intradermal test and found a massive amount of allergies!! I'm finally on the road to getting help after 15 long years. I don't give someone 5 stars lightly but he deserves it and then some. :) read more

If you have sinus problems, this is the doctor to go to to get it fixed. I watched my wife go through several days of terrific pain after her nasal surgery in early 2005. So when I needed nasal and sinus surgery for a sinus infection I had for two years that antibiotics couldn't touch; for scarring in my nose caused by damage in my youth; and a deviated septum, I was not looking forward to enduring what she endured, with my nose packed with suffocating gauze. I went on-line looking for a highly rated ENT doctor. All reviews seemed to direct me to Dr. Knapp. Boy, was I glad that it did. First off, when you meet Dr. Knapp, you will like his openness and relaxed manner. I immediately took a liking to him for his cheery disposition, his professionalism, and his truly caring attitude as he works to make everything he does comfortable for his patient. He took time with me to explain what he thought the problem was and how he would fix it. When I told him about my wife's experience, he said there isn't any reason to suffer a lot of pain, with the medications on the market today. I prepared myself mentally and had the operation two days ago. The work Dr. Knapp did was more extensive than he planned and included closing off a second hole in my sinuses that was causing problems by recycling the infection. After all that, I awoke with a slight headache, but otherwise, no pain. Instead of using cotton stuffing, Dr. Knapp used a packing that dissolves. He told me it takes a little longer to apply in the operating room, but it results in a lot less difficulty for patients during recovery. This is a doctor who truly cares about his patients and takes pride in his work. He also uses stitches that dissolve. I went home after surgery and followed the doctors instructions. I put ice packs on my nose to reduce the swelling and took my pain meds as instructed to stay ahead of any pain that might occur. So here it is, two days after my operation, and it feels and looks like I never had anything done. No pain since the recovery room and no outwardly noticeable swelling. I can breathe only slightly through my nose so far. I heard so many horror stories before the operation and, coupled with my wife's experience, I was less than enthusiastic about going under the knife. Dr. Knapp is more than an excellent ENT. He excels in his craft to the highest level. If I ever needed additional work on my nose, I would go out of my way to have it done by Dr Knapp. He has the highest rating I could possibly ever give. Now my wife, who swore she would never have sinus surgery again, said that if she needs additional work done, she will go to Dr. Knapp without reservation. read more

I've had headaches off and on for year due to nasal congestion (which I believed was sinus related). While sleeping I clog up and when I get up I feel some drainage but its never completely drained. Its also difficult to breath through the nose due to the congestion. I made appointment with Dr. Knapp due to the high reviews here on help. After taking a quick look, Knapp suggested I get a cat scan of my nasal passages, not telling me that it would be over $500 and not covered under preventative insurance (had to use HSA money for it). The results of the scan showed that I had no sinus issues. Knapp, seeing that there were no sinus issues, as well as saying himself that I only had a slight deviated septum (not worth surgery), instead of admitting he didn't know what to do, he prescribed me a months worth of wide spectrum antibiotics even though I had no infection. I didn't know this at the time but taking wide spectrum antibiotics for that long is a terrible idea. After 3 weeks of taking the antibiotics I ended up getting C-diff due to the antibiotics destroying all the good gut bacteria (c-diff is a horrible horrible thing to get by the way). I ended up having to go to the hospital twice due to this and contemplating having to perform some pretty gross operations to get rid of the c-diff. Luckily after the 2nd hospital visit I was clean. read more
