I started seeing Dr Burgoyne not long after he started his Seattle ENT practice. His expertise, clinical versatility and compassion had a huge role and positive impact on my medical needs over more than two subsequent decades. Looking back at many surgeries and some daunting challenges, I remain deeply appreciative that our paths crossed as they did. He brought his personal expectation for excellence to those who worked with and around him, in the office and the hospital, and it made a real difference. I only wish every clinical association I've had or will have could be as excellent as the care I received from John Burgoyne. Disappointing to see so many bad reviews here on Yelp. My experience overall was positive. Wait time at the office can be a little long but tolerable. The doctor himself, well, he may be a little arrogant, maybe just confident, but I like that in a surgeon. I'm not big on bedside manner and I'm not looking to make friends; I'm looking for an exceptional surgeon. I'm no stranger to surgeries and this was my second time around for sinus surgery and deviated septum. He took a couple extra steps another surgeon didn't take 14 years ago during the first time around. So far the results are spectacular and I would certainly recommend Dr. Burgoyne. The anesthesiologist during the surgery was also very good but I can't remember his name. read more

My GP sent me to Dr. Burgoyne for sinus surgery. The guy is arrogant, condescending and borderline inappropriate. There were just moments when I felt uncomfortable; nothing specific. Like, oh, looking at x-rays together and his knees being angled in a weird way and 'pinning' me in. Just things that didn't feel right. I guess the surgery was fine. He might be competent. I just didn't like his vibe and stopped going to my follow up appointments because of it. read more

I went to Dr. John Burgoyne at First and Minor Medical because I believed I should see an otolaryngologist. I had a continuing pain in my throat that was so excruciating it took all of my will power to swallow anything, including liquids. He examined me carefully and thoroughly, discovered what he believed to be the cause, explained his findings to me succinctly, and then prescribed medication that led to healing. His follow-up examination two weeks later was also careful and thorough. Although he was friendly, fundamentally he was all business, which was exactly what I wanted. I saw both Dr. Knapp and Dr. Burgoyne for some ongoing sinus issues. Dr. Kn,app recommended surgery and I wound up having the surgery with Dr. Burgoyne due to availability. The surgery went really well and the recovery was quick and my sinuses cleared up nicely. I continue to see Dr. Burgoyne for allergy related issues here and there and her always fixes me up nicely, and his appointments are always very fast so there is not a lot of waiting around. Great for those of us that really need to be in and out. Will definitely continue to go to Minor and James ENT. read more

I went Dr Burgoyne to repair sinus, orbital and cheek bone break. He assured me that he could get my face looking like it did before my accident. Unfortunately my accident was in December (tough month to get on dr schedule). His scheduling folks and front desk people were friendly. They got me in on short notice. But that was where the service stopped. I had my surgery which was very invasive as expected given the fractures. What wasn't expected 3 months post surgery...was having a sag under my eye, large incision line left behind (doesn't look like a plastic surgeons work), permanent black eye and an actual recession in my lower eye bone. I discussed my concerns with the Dr. just shy of 2 months post surgery. He said black eye would go away over time and the sag was an easy fix with another surgery (called a pinch). I am sure he noticed the obvious recession still but never brought up. Something didn't feel right as he never explained this could happen. I decided to get a second opinion. I could tell from the nurse and the Drs body language that they were mortified by Dr Burgoyne's surgery results on me. This Dr explained that a "pinch" would not fix my eye. He also indicated that the black eye is unable to drain and without surgery will not go away. To make matters worse not only am I going to need another surgery to fix dr Burgoynes botched work...I am now likely too far along heeling wise to repair the recession (dent) on my face. Unfortunately I feel like a practice cadaver and he should have indicated i was not a fit for his expertise. In appointments he seemed intelligent, a bit arrogant at times and a little socially awkward as he never seemed to take any ownership to his botched job. It was like he didn't care. He seemed confident that he did a good job. I am shocked to see all the positive reviews listed but it appears he is probably good at the ENT stuff. Plastic surgery would be worrisome based on my experience. I would avoid using for any plastic surgery. I have to imagine there are others like me that are walking around with bad results thinking that is as good as it will get. read more

Charged me $170 ear wax removal that was supposed to be part of the routine ear examination which I paid co-pay $40 already. Very expensive visit and lots of mix-up at Minor And James. Other clinics around has better office organization. read more

Dr Burgoyne is a fantastic doctor and surgeon. I have seen him many times over the years for various ENT issues, initially for the emergency removal of a peritonsillar abscess. He has since removed my tonsils (as a 37 year old - not fun), removed a cyst near my vocal chords, and I also see him for hearing loss and tinnitus. As another reviewer has said, he isn't a 'fuzzy' doctor, and I think he has a dry sense of humor, but I see him as a professional doctor, not to make friends! He is extremely competent and knowledgeable, and yes confident - but isn't that a good thing for a doctor? Don't you want a doctor who knows what he's doing?!!! I have recommended him many times over to friends, who also think highly of him. I won't see anyone else! read more

I do not recommend this doctor after paying for rhinoplasty associated with sinus surgery. He did not get the surgery symmetrical and his follow- up care and compassion were poor to say the least. For $3000 I expected to have a symmetrical nose and I even gave it a second try and he didn't get it right. read more

Dr Burgoyne is experienced and matter of fact. I read over reviews calling him arrogant, but I didn't feel that to be the case. I saw him for a throat issue which other doctors weren't able to diagnose, Dr Burgoyne recognized my symptom immediately, explained it and provided a follow up plan if it should continue. He was right it went away all on it's own, no treatment necessary. We also took our 7 year old to see Dr Burgoyne after 4 years of inconclusive hearing tests and unsure diagnosis from Children's Hospital. We spent thousands of dollars at Children's having tests and speaking to RNs, no offense to them but we never once were seen by Doctor. We took him to see Dr Burgoyne, who immediately took him for a hearing test with another Doctor, and recommended a procedure. The surgery took less than 15 minutes and went perfectly. Our sons learning and hearing issues have been removed, I only wish we had seen him years earlier. His bedside manner is direct, efficient and personality decisive. The office is not as high tech as Children's Hospital but his experience allowed him in both mine and my son's case to quickly and correctly treat us. If you want experience and a cure I recommend him, if you prefer someone fuzzy he might not be the Doctor for you. read more

Do not go to Dr. Burgoyne for surgery or sinus care. He uses old, out of date, harmful practices that won't help your sinuses. I saw him for breathing problems. He performed an "overaggressive resection" of my turbinates (best practice is to remove tissue under turbinates, since turbinates serve the function of keeping your nose moist and stopping infections). When I complained about painful breathing, a dry nose, giant crusties, and chronic sinus infections in my several follow ups over then next year, he put me on oral antibiotics several times (best practice is taking a culture - a PHYSICIANS ASSISTANT told me that at another hospital - and using antibiotics in a nasal rinse is the most effective way to treat sinus infection. On top of that since I had a rare antibiotic resistant bug living in my nose, I continued to have sinus infections every 3 months for the next 4 years). He then told me to get used to putting some nasal drops in my nose for the dryness and painful breathing every 6 hours and that I'd probably have that problem for the rest of my life. The deviated septum he fixed on the right, was replaced with a deviated septum on the left. Additionally he caused a complete collapse in the tip of my nose (which he curtly explained "you'll need to come back for that later"). I was unable to breath through my left nostril at all and my right nostril would close on itself if I breathed heavy. So his surgery put me in a worse place than when I came in. The surgeons (yes, 2 different experts had to fix his work) I saw for my revision knew him my name. They had to remove cartilage from my ribs to rebuild my nose and warned me I'd most likely suffer from (less, but still some) sinus infections and lowered resistance to colds for the rest of my life. See someone else. Please. read more

Do not let this arrogant man do surgery on you. He destroyed my eye in a biopsy that didn't even involve my eye. He gave me no notice that damage to my eye was a possibility. After surgery he gave me no explanation for the ruined eye. He saw me once after the surgery to tell me that he failed on the biopsy and that was it. He never offered any assistance or recommendations for other doctors to see. He never called to see how my eye was progressing. He walked away and left me with a permanently ruined and useless eye. DO NOT use Dr Burgoyne for sinus surgery you will regret it! Not only does he have a condescending and dismissive bedside manner his techniques are grossly OUTDATED!!! He has not bothered to stay up to date...uses outdated instrument's for diagnosis, doesn't culture bacteria, or have a scope by which to view what's going on in your sinus. All of this results in his "best guess" and your SUFFERING!!! Additionally, his bedside manner is condescending, and will NOT believe you if you say you're in an intolerable amount of pain. I went in week after week in tears with pain only to walk out of my post-op appts. feeling as though I was crazy for feeling what I was feeling. 10 weeks after my sinus surgery with Dr Burgoyne I was still experiencing excruciating headaches and facial pain. I got a CT from my GP because Dr. B saw no need for one yet...too early. After the results showed that he hadn't done his job right. I called his office, Dr Burgoyne lost his temper over the phone with me "Why did you get a CT at this point?!! It's going to look like a mess at this point!! Everything will be fine." Everything wasn't fine!! I never went back to his office again. Fortunately, I found Dr. Davis at the U.W. who believes me when I say I'm in pain and works with me to figure out how to overcome it, scopes me every time I'm in his office and sends bacteria off to the lab to figure out which antibiotic I should be on. I did have to have another surgery to FIX Dr. Burgoyne's oversights and mistakes of which I had to suffer through 4 months later. Dr. Davis's staff at UW were delightful using top notch technics...able to breath right after surgery. Dr Burgoyne stuffs stints up your nose for 24 to 48 hours post surgery (can only breath through mouth for that period)....I felt like I was in a war after surgery with him vs Dr. Davis. New technics allow you to breath right after surgery...who knew? Not Dr. Burgoyne. I hope this review saves at least one person from his pain. It's time for Dr. Burgoyne to step aside. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Burgoyne for almost 9 years including one sinus surgery about 6 years ago. He is far from condescending or arrogant. He is knowledgeable, compassionate, and professional and always happy to answer my questions and address my concerns. I suppose if you're looking for someone to hold your hand and cry with you, then you may want to go elsewhere, but if you're looking for a doctor who wants to help you find the best, least intrusive solution possible for your issue, I highly recommend him. Personally, I'm turned off by the fake sympathy you sometimes get from doctors and much prefer someone who is a straight shooter and who will do what's needed to help me get better without ordering unnecessary tests or surgeries. I've had friends and family members who have had sinuplasty with other doctors in Seattle and out of state and all had a significantly worse experience than I did. He worked with me so I could breathe immediately after surgery, and was attentive, professional, and thorough throughout the healing process. I highly recommend the practice. read more

Dr. John Bergoyne radiates compassion and wisdom and the ability to listen carefully to clients and to look with deep insight into the overall problem. In his presence, I believe, once again, that "Medicine is both an Art and a Science." Yesterday, after being treated for two weeks by two other doctors within the same specialty area, after having developed a severe cellulites of the left ear, after treatment by the first doctor, Dr. Burgoyne corretly diagnosed the original problem as being a cyst near the outer rim of the ear, which was filling with fluid, not "Cauliflower Ear," which was the diagnosis of the other two doctors. After spending every other day or every day traveling to see the other two doctors, and after spending 16 hours in the Emergency Room over a period of two days, I am very much relieved to have had the good fortune of being sent to Dr. Burgoyne by the second physician who was involved in the original treatment. The second doctor also took me off of a medication I use to manage symptoms of what is possibly fibromyalgia, because that medication is also a blood thinner. I was put on a powerful antibiotic--Levaquin--and that worked until I started developing symptoms of tendonitis. By the time I visited Dr. Burgoyne, I could barely make it into his office because of the pain in my muscles. Dr. Burgoyne removed the pressure dressing to allow the ear to have some time to heal a bit more. When there is no further sign of infection, he will remove the small cyst. He changed the antibiotic (which the second physician would also have done), and allowed me to resume the medication for the muscle pain. I saw this doctor to improve a nasal breathing problem caused primarily by a deviated septum. Where the septum deviates to one side internally, there was an external lump/notch, so I asked if it could be removed too. This is cosmetic, not covered by insurance, so I paid one thousand out of pocket for this. But the doctor shaved the wrong side externally! He offered to shave the correct side for free the next year and I agreed. The side which was fine before has a permanent cavity, and on the second go through, the lump/notch was only minimally reduced. Despite meeting well in advance of the first surgery, the doctor's office waited until the day before to tell me that my insurance would not cover surgery in their surgery center. No back-up plan, just it's not covered. They then called again even later to say I was lucky, the doctor is going out of the his to move it to the hospital (where it's covered). The doctor was very late to the first surgery. I was IV'd, ready to go for my guess one hour, and the anesthetists team had plenty to say about that hanging with just me much of that time. In the recovery room after the surgery, a nurse said she never saw so much post-op bleeding. To his credit, after awhile the doc did return to the hospital to respond to the bleeding having left already. The second surgery was only local anesthetic and the doctor sat behind me after he injected it. I couldn't see him though remember a remark he made about waiting for the local to kick in was a waste of his time. He actually had a pleasant demeanor each office visit. Sort of laid back. In retrospect it may have been from exhaustion. At first things seem in order at this office, though I don't think that's at all the case. Definitely not recommending. read more
