This is one of the cat adoption places insisting on paperwork being completed before they'll let you meet the cats. While I always understood this was an insurance issue, apparently it's not -- at least here. At this stage, I'm only interested in seeing the animals, I'm not ready to adopt and therefore saw no need to answer many of the questions on the form that are irrelevant until I'm ready to do so. The manager and I didn't seem to agree and I left not seeing a single animal -- unless I wanted to do so through a glass door -- a pointless option when I wanted to meet them personally. It was a polite exchange so there was no issue on that account. She was passionate about her position and I respect that. For me, although the facility seems like a definite upgrade from the last location, and I had hoped to see how things were improved and expanded and meet some of the residents, I saw no reason why my "browsing" required my agreement for them to call my current vet or agree to a home visit in order for me to even see a cat when I'm not there to adopt. I completely understand the concerns with making sure these animals find and keep a good home and are not sent to live (or die) with some nut-job, but do not understand how depriving them of the ability to meet or socialize with a variety of people under staff supervision requires something just short of credit and background checks. Visitors can spend as much time as they want just visiting with the cats or strolling through beautiful gardens complete with free range chickens. It is truly a magical place for the animal lover.

I know people who adopted cats they were told were healthy and fixed, only to find out they were sick and not spayed or neutered. They had to spend hundreds at the vet. The facility itself is in rough shape. There's moldy wood, sharp metal sticking out, and it doesn't look safe for the animals. They leave wet food out for hours, which is gross and attracts bugs. It's only open to the public two days a week, and they barely respond to messages. I've also heard she's keeping a bunch of cats in her personal home instead of the refuge, which is really concerning. This place honestly feels more like a hoarding situation than a proper animal rescue. I really wouldn't recommend adopting from here or supporting them. The animals deserve so much better.

They are truly all-volunteer and every decision they make is made with the best interest of the dog or cat in mind. I started fostering kittens with IAR in 2014 and continued on as a foster for several more years before transitioning to other volunteer roles. I also am what is known as a foster fail, having adopted an adorable lanky kitten early on as a companion for our resident kitty. Due to personal health concerns, I sadly stepped down from my volunteer roles last year, but I have a deep love for IAR and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking to adopt a dog, cat or pair of kittens, or to foster or volunteer! If you happen to be on one of the North Durham Nextdoor websites, on just about every post concerning community cats or dogs you'll see numerous individuals who have found help through IAR recommending them as a resource for guidance and support. I am sure the same is true throughout Durham, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro. IAR is quick to step in when there is a need - whether it's saving kittens who are in storm drains, feeding and spaying and neutering feral colonies, or rescuing and caring for homeless dogs and cats until they find their forever homes.

We saw someone bring another person in but she left immediately. We saw 2 ladies standing outside in the hall talking. We told them we asked for help, but instead of offering to help us the spent time telling us they are not to blame and someone's radio must not have been on. But still no offer to assist. I was lured in into a dark alley late in the evening but I informed on the phone that I have no cash on me and they hang up without showing me a kitten. I called to report a fraud. I filed online. Nobody interested. So be very careful! I was very fortunate to find SweetPaw cattery. Not only they have been in business for a long time and have lots of medals to show their quality, the owner LOVES WHAT SHE DOES. It is not about making money via her kitty farm. Her kitten was well socialized. He came off his airplane ride happy! My husband still remembers our shock: what a cool little guy. He immediately went to eat food while drinking from the airport!!! He watched cars passing by with curiosity. He felt at home right away. He is healthy and his records were in perfect order. Two years later he still doing great ( no odd behavior like my ragdoll who pees; no physical or emotional problems) I would only buy Siberian from this cattery. The owner still in touch in case I have questions. I feel she truly cares about her kittens lives. It is not easy to say bye to your babies but it is part of life. His prognosis was so poor that I had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. When I reached out to the breeder, it was to ask about a replacement kitten under her health guarantee. I wasn't asking about how to adopt a kitten for the first time--I had just lost my pet and was trying to navigate both grief and what the contract covered. I understand she runs a business and is busy, but as both a breeder and a fellow cat parent, I hoped for more communication and compassion. Instead, I felt dismissed, as she only leaned on her own vet's opinion and did not consider the records I provided from mine. Her contract technically covers "genetic disorders," but despite the documentation, she refused to acknowledge that my kitten's condition could fall under that guarantee. Beyond the technicalities, what hurt most was the lack of empathy during such a devastating loss. I'm sharing this review to help others. If you are considering this breeder, I encourage you to carefully review the health guarantee, ask very specific questions, and think about what kind of breeder support you want if the unthinkable happens. As I searched for a great veterinarian in the area Morrisville Cat Hospital kept showing up everywhere with glowing reviews and happy pet families! When Dr. Beth Hraban came into the room we knew that our choice to drive the extra distance from our town was worth every minute spent in the car! She took great care with Wesley, was very gentle in examining him, and her vet techs were so loving with him as well. I appreciate all that Dr. Beth, Kamya, and the rest of the team did to make us feel comfortable with our new veterinary care and also to make Wesley so at ease in a new place.
