Did not know this was the inspiration for Stranger Things! The tower definitely gave Hawkins Lab vibes. It was creepy driving through here with no one around. Did I lock the doors and roll the windows up? Yes. There's a cul-de-sac right below the tower with these "fake structures" that apparently were used to disguise the buildings during WWII. There were info plaques but I was too scared to get out lol. After googling quickly it says The "Town": The buildings included a gymnasium (disguised as church), commissary, barracks, exchange store, and residential homes. They were all boarded up with signs to stay out and falling objects, yikes! No thank you! read more

Camp Hero State Park offers spectacular views of both the Montauk Lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean. Tip: While this place is an interesting destination, it's dangerous enough that you should probably think twice before bringing young children along for a visit. The day we visited was clear and lovely, but we unfortunately couldn't stay long because our footgear wasn't appropriate for hiking around inside the park. I look forward to returning with more appropriate shoes. Note that some of the cliffs here are both high and steep, so you should mind the signs which warn people to avoid getting to close to the cliff edges. read more

While in the area we decided to stop at this site and it was very nice. We were able to walk and catch a look at the bluffs and also see the ocean. It is a nice walk to take. Great opportunity to take good pics. If you want you can bring a picnic basket and enjoy some quiet time. Just make sure you are at a safe distance from the edge of the bluffs. read more

Visit Date: January 2, 2022 I came here to get in my first hike of the new year. I believe I have one more Montauk park to hike because I was in Shadmor in late Spring/early Summer of 2021. It was hard to find a way into. The parking part seemed to be blocked off when I drove past it so I parked along a different side street where I noticed other cars parked. I forgot the name of the trail I went on but it ended overlooking a beautiful bluff before I turned back. I also ended up on part of the battery 112 trail but that's not the trail I was trying to follow. Some people get eerie feelings at camp hero. I didn't but it was interesting to see the batteries I passed. I wondered what they were until I saw a sign for them. The woods on the trail had a lot to offer, little streams to cross, rocks, trees, plus a lovely beach once you get to the bluff and a tiny bit of graffiti. This is definitely a LI hike worth going on. read more

COVID REVIEW: Came here during the summer with a group of friends to explore Montauk and eat lobster! You have two options, you can attempt to park at Camp Hero, or if you drive up to the Lighthouse area, there is plenty of paid parking. We parked there and walked along down to Camp Hero. There is a large beach area, with rocks and bluffs. It is scenically beautiful, especially on a sunny day. Living in Long Island my whole life, I am surprised I never really explored Montauk, but because of travel restrictions we thought it was a good opportunity to have a local adventure. Everyone was wearing their masks when needed, and pretty spaced out. There were lots of families as well! read more

This might not the proper location; the address might be a mailing address instead of where the park actually is -- east on highway 27 toward Montauk Point, just west of Montauk Point State Park and the lighthouse. For the most part, Camp Hero is an abandoned and decommissioned military base that is now a state park. Vehicle access is limited for part of the year, and the best way to experience it might be in a roundabout manner. I've read a little about the park's role in a government conspiracy involving the Montauk Project, Phiadelphia Experiment, mind control, psychics, teleportation, and mysterious sasquatch-like creatures. Supposedly, while the park is state owned, the military owns the ground beneath -- including a series of labyrinthine tunnels and underground labs. If you're into that kind of stuff, start out on Camp Hero Road. Park along the road just off highway 27 and dive into the woods to follow the Points Woods Trail. This will wend its way through the forest, crossing streams over dissheveled wooden bridges and through torn-down, rusting chicke-wire fences until you hit Battery 112 Trail. There, just on the edge of the camp, you'll see two old gun embankments, which once housed 16-inch artillery. Both are now blocked in with concrete. The camp itself retains almost all of the original buildings -- commissary, gymnasium, and barracks -- as well as the iconic radar dish tower, which can be seen from the Montauk Point Lighthouse. If you're lucky, you'll have a map and can navigate the space once inhabited by 600-plus military personnel. Don't try to continue looping around on the trail; it'll take forever. Instead, approach the base via Points Woods and then exit to your car via Camp Hero Road, which, while it might block traffic, is open to pedestrians. And if you see any sasquatch, mind blast them. This is a wonderful example of abandoned infrastructure, military history, and conspiracy theory run amuck. Worth more than three pages in "Weird NY," for sure! read more

If you're looking for an amazing park rich in history and wonderful hiking trails then Camp Hero is your jam. Offering beautiful views of the ocean with incredible diversity of wildlife this place is packed full of beauty. It's also one of the places on long Island with some of the darkest sky's making it a great place to look up at night. With the stars above and the sounds of the ocean it will take your breath away. This place was one of the defensive bases for the US so there are still plenty of old buildings from the fort left standing to see and old bunkers hidden in the hills. read more

Jen S. and I went to Montauk, and this was one of her desired stops. When I read about it, I was excited to go too. According to what we read, it was the area that Stranger Things was originally based on. We went off season, so it wasn't crowded. The parking by the bluffs were. Plenty of people walking down to the water or on the nearby paths. Reading the plaques around the former military installation allowed you to see what the mindset of the times were. Whether it was WWII or the Cold War, the facility was considered a last defense against enemies. It was an interesting stop. While we didn't utilize them, there were barbecues and picnic tables. It's right down the road from the lighthouse too. Worth the trip. read more

Tops the Conspiracy Theorists things to see list. (of course that list coincides with an FBI list, I'm sure.) Not an easy access to the tower location but nothing too extreme either. Kind of amazing how low profile it is when you get to it considering the size. Now that the location's a little more mainstream and apart of the parks dept. I'm sure it's not as spooky. This is apart of the matrix of oddness in Montauk, which range from a Montauk Monster, US Lead Mind Control experiments, Ancient Pyramids in the bluffs to the Native Americans of Montauk being inhabitants of Atlantis. Review for the Point Woods Loop Trail and the beginnings of Sea Haul Out Trail. Came here with a group of friends and 2 dogs. Online information for the start of the Point Woods Loop Trail was lacking. Here are the coordinates of the start of the trail: Good maps coordinates: 41.067931,-71.878987 As you drive on Camp hero Rd, you will see a shoulder on the right hand side and that's where you can park. Then you walk about 30 feet and you'll see a sign post directing you to the trail. You just follow the trail and you will see lots of historic stuff. You will see where the weapons used to be and see a sign not to touch military equipment/ammunition if you find any. As you continue walking, you will come across another sign for the Bluffs Overlook. I highly recommend going to the overlook to the ocean and the cliffs. Be very careful not to stand too close to the edge of the cliffs. We thought this was a good place to stop and eat lunch. An amazing view. As you continue back onto the trail, you will eventually walk near the coast line and head towards the lighthouse. On the way to the lighthouse, you will pass a parking lot on the left hand side. You can definitely skip the hike and just drive to the location =P After you get to the lighthouse, just find the concession stand and head down onto the beach and head West. You have to walk for quite a bit before you hit the seal area. We never made it to the seal area but I hope to come back to see them. Even though we came here during the winter, I couldn't believe how many ticks I found on the dogs. Luckily none latched on to me but a friend of ours had an unexpected passenger. This place is also great to see the winter birds if you're a birder. I would definitely come back here again to see the seals and birds. I'm just not sure if I'll bring the dogs back again. Probably my favorite place on Long Island! I have no idea how Camp Hero managed to stay under my radar (no pun intended) during the four years I lived in Suffolk! Decommissioned military base, spooky radar tower, conspiracy theories linked to the Philadelphia project, crazy bluffs, even crazier surfer dudes who walk down the bluffs...need I say more? Heath R. seems to have explored the park much more than I have, but my plan is to bike around the trails soon. Last time I was here, I asked one of the surfers to show me how to get down to the coast. It's pretty scary but definitely worth it if you're brave and cautious. Follow the signs to the picnic area and you'll find the infamous radar tower. Take pictures but don't try to hop the fence! Also be sure to check out at least one of the bluffs for majestic views of the Montauk Lighthouse and the Atlantic. read more

Beautiful awesome cliffy views unlike anything you will see anywhere else. We randomly took this path and ended up by the radar tower that looked like we were on the set of Lost. We actually did get slightly lost for a after emerging from the trail. If you are looking for something to do out in Montauk, you really shoud come here for at least an hour. read more

Great views and an interesting history. Loved watching the surfers from the high bluffs, and seeing the lighthouse from a distance is pretty lovely too. Ended up just doing a drive-by of the lighthouse instead of paying for parking. During the off season parking at Camp Hero is free. read more

This place is creepy af, but is a nice place to spend an afternoon hiking around. There's picnic tables, and a placard or two. Not much going on here overall, but worth a see. Pro-tip: we rented a moped from an area sporting store. 2 people / 4 hours $86. Fun to zip around Camp Hero on. read more
