This place is cool during the day, but to really appreciate it, try and get a glimpse of it at night. You need a permit to be there at night (you can buy one online from the NY state parks website) but once your there and see the lights intensity over the deep black ocean and sky you get a real feel for just how important this was, and still is in aiding navigation on a dark night. read more

I'd read about Montauk Point State Park, and I set out to visit when I found myself in the neighborhood.   It's a state park that's got some interesting history behind it, and some really good views.  So why am I rating it only 3 stars?  The parking and entrance fees are ridiculous! Tip: It costs $8 to park a single vehicle, and they charge $11 per person for the "privilege" of walking in the general vicinity of the lighthouse. read more

Last time we visited Montauk it was too cloudy and foggy we couldnt see anything at all. But this 2nd time around was different. My husband and I came back for his bday weekend on 9/14/19 and the weather was perfect! There may be other entry points here but we entered from Camp Hero. We saw the bluffs first and it was cool and scary at the same time! The vast ocean was amazing to look at from there! After that we followed the little trail down to the beach. The trek was exciting for some reason. I guess because we were surrounded by lush greens that grew taller than us. Since you really cant see where it leads you the thought that we might have gotten lost crossed my mind. That is until we started hearing the crashing waves from the ocean! It was beautiful to hear and was like a relaxing music. As soon as we heard it we knew we were getting close to shore. Eventually we arrived and it felt like the trees and bushes opened a curtain for us revealing the Montauk lighthouse and the ocean as far as the eyes can see. It was breathtaking! The view there was beautiful my photos do not even do justice. We walked down the rocky shore surprisingly delighted to see pretty pebbles and rocks. Some were already nicely balanced by people who came earlier than us. Even though there were other visitors, the sound of the waves drown the noise out and it really felt nice and peaceful over there. People enjoyed just relaxing, taking photos, fishing, walking up and down the paths to the lighthouse, etc and as for me, I enjoyed every single second I was there. Taking in the view, the fresh air, the sunset. It was a really nice relaxing trip. I had the feeling that just being there that day could probably cure whatever ailment you have. I have been to Montauk many times but it has been many years since I've taken a ride to the Point . We decided to check it out this past summer . The location is beautiful with a gorgeous view of the lighthouse! Besides the lighthouse and museum there are several trails you can enjoy that take you down to the water . It's a state park so senior citizens do not have to pay for parking ! read more

Montauk Point is located in the State Park of the same name--it's the easternmost tip of Long Island and also of New York State. It's located on the South Fork and is quite a nice (and long) drive from NYC. Lots of people come here to surf fish, but there's also nature hiking trails that you can explore. The beaches here are all rocky, so no laying on this beach for a tan! read more

Correction: Originally posted as Camp Hero State Park, changed to Montauk Point State Park While we had entered near the lighthouse entrance we walked down to the rocky side of the beach by the south side of the hill by the lighthouse. To enter this part where the parking lot to the lighthouse parking is 8 dollars at the State park stand. Of to the right side of the gate to the lighthouse are some paths that lead down the rocky portion of the beach. This path is obviously slightly downhill but the opening at the end will lead you just to the top of where the rocks lie which ranch in size from about half a foot to a food in diamter. Be careful if you plan on walking down to the shore since the rocks tend to be loose and you could loose your balance. As you approach the beach the rocks tend to become smaller until you get to the where the water breaks on the beach the rocks at this point are tiny pebbles. From here you are bascally at the bottom of the cliffs in an opening between the higher cliffs just to the south of the lighthouse and the shorter cliffs at the lighthouse. This is a nice spot to get some photos of the cliffs, the lighthouse and the beach. read more

I worked and lived in Montauk I am proud and honored to share this beautiful part of Long Island and New York with the hard working Folks who dare to live here year round. My hat's off to you. A great place to visit to see the very end of Long Island. Take a path down to the rocky coast and enjoy the beautiful ocean scenery. Do a walk along the breakers and watch the waves come in and splash on the boulders. If you still have energy, you can climb the lighthouse for even better views. It is a beautiful park and a must see when visiting Montauk. Parking is $8 unless you have a State Park Pass. Admission to the lighthouse is another $10. read more

Review for the Point Woods Loop Trail and the beginnings of Sea Haul Out Trail. Came here with a group of friends and 2 dogs. Online information for the start of the Point Woods Loop Trail was lacking. Here are the coordinates of the start of the trail: Good maps coordinates: 41.067931,-71.878987 As you drive on Camp hero Rd, you will see a shoulder on the right hand side and that's where you can park. Then you walk about 30 feet and you'll see a sign post directing you to the trail. You just follow the trail and you will see lots of historic stuff. You will see where the weapons used to be and see a sign not to touch military equipment/ammunition if you find any. As you continue walking, you will come across another sign for the Bluffs Overlook. I highly recommend going to the overlook to the ocean and the cliffs. Be very careful not to stand too close to the edge of the cliffs. We thought this was a good place to stop and eat lunch. An amazing view. As you continue back onto the trail, you will eventually walk near the coast line and head towards the lighthouse. On the way to the lighthouse, you will pass a parking lot on the left hand side. You can definitely skip the hike and just drive to the location =P After you get to the lighthouse, just find the concession stand and head down onto the beach and head West. You have to walk for quite a bit before you hit the seal area. We never made it to the seal area but I hope to come back to see them. Sample photos here: http://imag3l.com/?p=1349 The trails were very easy to hike. We encountered some patches of mud but other than that, no rock scrambles or steep cliffs to hike up or down. Even though we came here during the winter, I couldn't believe how many ticks I found on the dogs. Luckily none latched on to me but a friend of ours had an unexpected passenger. This place is also great to see the winter birds if you're a birder. I would definitely come back here again to see the seals and birds. I'm just not sure if I'll bring the dogs back again. A beautiful state park! with lots of history, cliffs and even a gift store. to avoid the long wait to climb to the top of the Lighthouse, avoid peak weekends and holidays. Great view at the top although you only have a few moments. Only one at a time can climb the short steps at the top. read more

Location and lighthouse aside, all trails should be closed off until the booming Lone Star tick population is eliminated. Hiked only about a quarter mile with girlfriend and the mutt on the Money Pond Trail and it destroyed our trip. Cannot begin to explain the stress. Yes we noticed a sign posted cautioning the tick presence, but to be covered in them from walking at a decent pace strictly on the trail for roughly 10 minutes is an outrage. I want my $8 back and the Petsmart tab covered! read more

Great little hike over the cliffs on a warm summer day. We were able to relax and listen to the waves and watch the guys fishing. There are some great huge rocks to get pretty photos of your family, etc... with the ocean in the background. I saw a lot of dogs having a great day. Unfortunately the lighthouse was closing in 30 minutes from the time that we got there, so it's now on the future "To do while traveling the world" list. read more
