I traveled around Germany by rail and this station was the most impressive one…read more Arriving from Berlin, when I first stepped off of the train, I thought I arrived back 100 years ago. Very East German style, although they were destroyed during the WWII, they restored it so nicely, they kept the old charm. I was told this is the largest railway station in the world by square meters but they were designed well, it is easy to make it connection yet going downstairs, you get to enjoy good food and shopping (it's like a huge shopping mall). This station was perhaps cleanest hauptbanhof I've visited and felt very safe there. Buying tickets and getting information on kiosk was easy to navigate. They also have information center at the ground level if you prefer to speak in person. They also have signs throughout to tell you if trains are on time. Most delays I saw was 10 mins.

I guess if you are by yourself, want more privacy, and plan to stay longer than one night you should rent a room with fewer beds. Besides that, the room and bathrooms (for women) were very clean. They provide sheets and towels. I really liked that they have a patio, where I enjoyed a cigarette after a strenuous 12 hour flight + 6 hour train travel to Germany. (I hate Deutsche Bahn - they are late and unreliable.) Moreover, they have a common area with TV, several tables and chairs, and (YES!) free WiFi. Also, they have a kitchen where you can cook your own food, which is awesome especially if you stay longer. Really, this hostel is one of the best I've ever stayed in. It is within walking distance to the train station and close to central Leipzig - so no worries about that either. Ok, that's it.

I departed at Halle impressed on how well the German Government has improved the transportation infrastructure post reunification. Hall Hauptbanhof was relatively modest, uninspiring, but functional. There's nothing to write home about (except of course this review), other than this Station does the job. It also helps that a person with a van, that was hired by our Company was there to meet all of us and take us on to Merseburg.
