I liked the mountain biking here a lot. As a beginner I found challenging trails but nothing dangerous for me so that was good. I liked the mix of technical and flow on the different trails. Only lack of a star because the trails were not always labeled well causing us to get lost a couple times. read more

Leo (the bulldog) and I enjoyed a hike at CamRock park. Dog park permit required, fyi. You can purchase annual passes through the city/county or else buy a daily pass on-site. This park seems predominantly geared (pun not intended, I swear!) towards mountain bike riders but there are several loops that hikers can also enjoy. (Mountain bikers need a trail pass too, fyi. Daily or annual passes can be purchased on-site). We didn't come across too many other people while we were here, despite it being a gorgeous fall day. We did meet up with one dog off-leash running with a biker. Scrraaappppe!! (dragging out soapbox) Argh! I get it - for many people they think their dog is well-behaved so they don't need to be on a leash. Well, there are rules for a reason and when people disregard those and let their dog off-leash when they shouldn't, parks crack down & change rules to not allow dogs at all (um, look at most Madison parks as a prime example). People with "well-behaved dogs" forget that #1) other people may be afraid of dogs and your off-leash dog is especially scary to them and #2) other dogs you encounter may be dog-aggressive or leash-aggressive so if your dog runs up to them, oooh boy! ANYway, back to CamRock. This was a fine spot for hiking and I'd go back if I were in the area. However, if I were driving from Madison I would probably opt for Indian Lake over CamRock for a hiking trip. I would definitely like to go back to CamRock in the spring though for some mountain biking, those trails looked like fun! read more

Joined a group of friends for mountain biking today. Its been wet, but the trails were in good condition. My husband rides out there frequently, but it was my first time. As a beginner, I found the trails to be well-marked. The green/easy trails really were easy, to the point where they are great for a true beginner and even kids. I made it to the intermediate trails and enjoyed them as well. We brought a crock pot of chili and other food to share. The shelter area 3 is shut down for the season, but the park ranger turned on the electricity so we could plug in the crock pot. We thought that was so nice! Be a good citizen and always purchase your trail passes. We are really fortunate to have such a great park for mountain biking in Dane County, and your park pass payment and doing a good job of cleaning up after yourself will keep the park great for you and others. read more

Cute park with trails for winter activities, which I presume are nice for summer activities, too. You can rent snowshoes or cross country skis nearby. It's a nice trail, I think like 2 miles each way, so we skied most of it and back in under an hour. Good conditions, pretty much flat, and nice tracks. read more

I'm in LOVE LOVE LOVE with this riding park. It's a very short drive out of the Madison area, but so worth the drive! Check the trail website before heading out as there may be trail closings due to weather. This is lower land, so there may be flooding or major mud that closes the trails. They have trails for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders and they are marked pretty good. Sometimes the trails will intersect and its hard to figure out if you are on the same trail as you started. I printed a copy of the trail system before we went. That was very helpful! We pulled it out 4 times while we were biking the trails. Some of the trails are one way and some are two way trails. Be aware of which one you are on, as someone could be coming up the opposite way and you may not see them until you are literally tire to tire with them. There are quite a few blind turns and corners on these trails. That element of surprise is part of the fun though. We also came face to face with people walking the trails too. There's a lot of areas that surround the trails to park your vehicle too. The downtown Cambridge area is super cute and has some great places to refuel after your adventure. read more
