Vilas Park abuts the Henry Vilas Zoo and offers tons…read moreof green field space, two playgrounds (including the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe slide that's been there forever), a beach, and a fair amount of parking if you can figure out how to get to it. I've attended a few birthday parties here, spent a few afternoons on the beach looking at Lake Wingra, and hiked through to get to the zoo when parking in the surrounding neighborhood. If there's a park activity you want to partake in, Vilas probably has it. I have yet to make it to the park in the winter, but there is a speed skating track on the lagoon and a some other skating/hockey spots. With the zoo being free, it's easy to make a day at Vilas.

While pets may not be allowed in the park, you can certainly walk along the road/path with your pet. Vilas beach offers a great swimming spot and a sand beach. Lake Wingra is a wake-free lake so it's less busy, quieter and presumably cleaner than other lakes around. There is a lifeguard stationed at the beach and a maintained swimming area. Note - be sure to check the City website to make sure the beach is open before heading out, Madison beaches can close unexpectedly due to bacteria (translation -don't feed the geese! They poop & then beaches end up closed!) Vilas also offers a great playground for kids and ice skating in the winter. The only thing on my "wish list" for Vilas is that they would actually pave a sidewalk along the road through the park. You have to walk either on the grass or along the road, which can feel dangerous. It's also a one-way drive through the park but with some regularity drivers get confused and/or impatient and drive the wrong way through there so keep your eyes open for that!

This is a really neat park on the Sugar River. It starts at the "head gates" for the once brodhead…read moremill and hydro project. The park is a trail along the raceway, or mill race. This is essentially a man made canal that provides water to the mill pond in Brodhead. It is a lovely walk, very scenic with numerous wetlands, woodland, farmland, ending with a lovely stroll along the canal into the village of Brodhead. Here, along one side of the canal are numerous fun homes reminiscent of the canals in Amsterdam. If you choose to walk or kayak, once in Brodhead, stroll downtown to a local cafe or restaurant. Hint: This is a GREAT trip for a fun outdoor date! Even if the date doesn't go well, the scenery is lovely and you can enjoy the walk back alone. It's a 4+ mile roundtrip. Easy hike with gravel two lane path. Hint: Hint: oooh...you discovered the super double secret hint! This is a great place to bring your dog. Lots of room to run big! Fetch, swimming, ducks, and the water is clean so, your dog can enjoy itself! Hint: Hint: Hint: A super triple secret hint? Say it isn't so! Kayakers - pay attention! Here is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for kayaking that requires no shuttling! Put your boat in here, paddle up river a short distance (no current here) to the decatur tap, portage the dam, paddle down the Sugar River to where the race rejoins the Sugar River. Then paddle up the race to Brodhead dam. Portage the dam and bing bang boom, you're back on the race! Now it's an easy paddle up the race back to the head gates where your car is parked, waiting for you, with a cooler of beer in trunk! Cheers, you earned it! It's a nice place for a picnic lunch if you are in the area. Hint: On the other side of the dam, to the east, is the mill race park. This is a beautiful long mill race that used to deliver water to the old mill and hydro plant down river in the city of Brodhead. It's a great place for a walk, dog friendly, and very nice kayaking! My dog and I love this dog park! It's a big area and very well kept. Everything is well spaced out,…read moreoffering a few different park options depending on dog size. When you pull into the parking lot there are a few different fenced areas you can enter. The larger park is the main one. There are two different parking lots for this one, one on each side of the park. They have a few different exits/entrances by each lot so people can easily get in and out with their dog. We went to the main larger park and the other medium/large dog park. Both are big circle loops. The main one is a bit bigger of a loop, about a mile to go around the whole thing. They had benches and water pumps/bowls throughout the loop. They also have an area with some dog agility structures. The second one we went to was across the parking lot. Another great loop that includes a boardwalk and some woods. I have a high energy dog that needs a lot of exercise so this is the perfect place for her. It's very enjoyable for me as well. It feels like you're on a hike more than at a dog park. The large fields and woods make it a great walk! And seeing all of the other dogs is always fun.

Get motivated by coming to Congdan Park!…read more I like to do some running as part of my physical fitness routine. Delavan streets (like any streets and sidewalks) are brutal on the knees and difficult to enjoy when having to keep a watch out for passing traffic. Congdan Park has become a savior to my fitness. The park is mostly comprised of a pond for fishing with a surrounding .9 mile trail. There are gardens with picnic tables and a water fountain on the west side, which is beautiful in the summer. The trail is relatively quiet, so I haven't had trouble taking laps around the pond, and it's really quite lovely to rest up afterwards in the gardens. One drawback is that the park is right next to highway 43, but if you're going to try and make an area more beautiful why green around the pavement? It's a lovely area that wont be lost on its visitors.
