I can't believe that I've never written a review for Candle Wick. I've shopped and visited here several times for the most delicious candles, crystals, herbs and other spiritual goodies. I love the Motor City Hoodoo candles. They are incredibly luscious and are powerful. I bought Miss Cleo Mae today...the Goddess Bitch candle. I also purchased the Goddess Lakshmi oil. Everything is reasonable priced. The staff is more than equipped to handle any questions; it's a pleasure talking with people who are into what you're into. The shop carries a great welcoming and comforting energy. Classes and gatherings are offered, such as meditation circles. Parking: paid on the street or parking lots. read more

I went out of my way to purchase vigil candles from this store. The candles wouldn't burn because of their metal wicks (a sign of an extremely low quality candle). When I requested a refund they said because the product had been used they couldn't accept (of course they've been used, I attempted to burn the candles, which ultimately wouldn't burn). Also said they 'couldn't guarantee the quality' because they didn't manufacture them. Do not sell product you can't stand behind! I was shocked and disappointed by the terrible customer service here. I always feel cheesy talking about candles. I mean, what is there really to talk about? And a whole store devoted to candles? Isn't that a bit much? Then again, this is the second store devoted to candles that I've gotten sucked into in the last few months. Even though I think of the Office and Jan's candle-making venture anytime I think of wax and wicks, ultimately I'm glad that stores like the Candle Wick Shoppe exist. Sometimes, you arrive home and your place smells inexplicably nasty. Or maybe your coat has infected your whole living room with its "the smoke-eaters were broken" aroma after a night at the bar (yup, we still smoke in bars here in Michigan). Sometimes you (read:I) leave things in the broiler too long, and suddenly the house has a lingering char-broiled scent. On these occasions, a nicely scented candle is good to have on hand. I'm not too big into anything flowery -- I'd rather it smelled like I just baked a batch of cookies. Since I'm picky and a little cheap, I also prefer longer-burning soy if I'm going to drop money on a candle. The staff at Candle Wick Shoppe were very sweet and steered me towards plenty of things that fit both of my criteria. I walked out with enough candle loot in my bag to fake being a busy baker (Oatmeal Cookies, Pumpkin Pie) and give a few for the holidays, too. First, their selection of spiritual candles is amazing and they carry quite a few varieties that that are longer lasting and by companies which are great to support. Second, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. When you start to talk about things outside of your reason for being there, you know you've run across a like-minded soul who wants more than for you to just be another face in the crowd. I'm definitely not a candle person, because I have the world's worst sense of smell. I can't tell if the house stinks, but I assume it does because I have a lot of pets, so sometimes it's nice to try and de-stink it when I have guests over. We wandered in just because it looked kinda cool in there, with no intention of buying anything, and we walked out with a nice little bag of candles! I actually even found a few things that I could smell, which made me very happy. They also had some really cute candle holders and clever lighters (I totally want the one that looks like a giant matchstick). I'm not sure whether the guy working was the owner, but he knew everything about every single candle in there and clearly loved his job. He was very friendly without being pushy at all. Prices were pretty reasonable for such good quality and for being a small local business. I also liked that the store had some palette-cleansing coffee beans, and that they were from Chazzano which just opened down the street. It's nice to see local businesses giving each other a leg up when they can! Even though I'm still a non-candle-lover, I'm looking forward to my next visit and would recommend everyone stop here and take a sniff! read more

Candles are sort of the longer lasting version of flowers as a gift. They eventually pass on, fading away after imparting a lovely fragrance and a pleasant look to a room. I have a bit of guilt whenever I provide them as gifts for I know I am presenting a friend or relative with something with a limited shelf life and an expiration date based on use. Nonetheless, they make such wonderful additions to the house and office (depending) that it's hard not to give them. Personally, I hate overpowering Yankee Candle-strength pot candles and things that reek of chemicals trying to recapture an ocean breeze or a field of flowers. Give me more natural options of beeswax and subtle fragrances, essential oils and rich elements derived from real sources instead of a chemist's mixing bowl. Candle Wick fulfills that need. It's a lovely shop on the whole, saturated with a bit of the mystical that calls for incense burners and quiet reminiscing or meditation. Don't let that put you off if you are more accustomed to the candle aisle in Target or TJ Maxx. The ambiance allows you to browse at your will and whim through tealights and tapers, squat pillars and dainty votives. I like the opportunity to just float here and there, seeing what takes my fancy. Too many times the olfactory sense doesn't get its due and the poor nose plays second fiddle to sight. There seems to be a lot of rhyme and reason to the organization inside the store. Don't know where to find it? Just ask. The patient staff are very knowledgeable on the source and ingredients of their stock, and they can help you locate just that right candle to evoke a certain mood. There's a whole lot of difference between a candle for a romantic mood and something to cover up the cigarette stink of the previous tenant or an uplifting citrus needed to combat crappy work stress. You don't need any juju or special hippie knowledge to decipher the best choices, either. I'm particularly fond of food candles: sugar cookies, apple cinnamon, pie, decadent chocolate. The rarer the better. I don't want heavy, sappy flavours when I can have wine and Mom's baking, thank you. I had no problem locating a variety of candles in various price ranges, and other succulent savories either. For those of you who have a more esoteric bent, there are plenty of useful supplies and products which can balance your chi, align your chakras, and fill those special niche uses. They have a great deal of specialty items, and will probably bend over backwards to order something if you need it. The staff deserve a round of applause for being such fabulous members of the community. They're sweet, kind, and receptive to anyone who needs help. Yay! read more

This local Ferndale spot is wonderful -- It has lit-up my life and makes my house smell good. The service is excellent and the candle selection is absolutely great. They carry a selection of locally made candles as well as brand name candles from large manufactures. The selection also includes bees wax and soy candles. I recently purchased some locally made candles: Evil Eye scent. It is nice clean scent that wards off evil... And goodness knows, I have evil around me, lol I highly recommend the Candle Wick Shoppe! read more

I definitely like the new location, decor, and selection. It's really unique, candles with intent, and the atmosphere is cozy and homey. Price is higher than average but so is quality. I'm not crazy about the burn time, I find these candles burn fast. And for some reason, the employees are kinda rude. I never go here for household candles, only for special needs. I made an order through their website in January, and the shipping was more expensive than I was willing to pay for a few candles ($40). I called to cancel my order and was told by the manager that my refund would be issued when the transaction posted. Since then, I have not gotten a refund, nor have I received any items at all, and every call and email to the business has gone unanswered. If I could give 0 stars, I would. This is a great little business that opened up in the old Affirmations building a few years ago. I like candles. I know, I know, they're a fire hazard, but I like to have a house that smells nice. I have a live-in odorizer named Henri who can pack quite the olfactory wallop even though he's just a13 pound poodle. Also my wife likes to cook things like fish and onions occasionally, which makes me want to die. The Candle Wick Shoppe carries a wide variety of candles and has a lot of soy candles, which are the best. As far as scents go, if you want it, they've probably got it. The last time I was in there I bought a peanut butter scented candle for my sister and my brother bought a fruit parfait candle for somebody. I also bought a chocolate scented candle for my best friend in California -- which was not cheap to ship but was worth it because the candle smelled so good you could probably trick a blind person or a child into eating it. But you shouldn't. The staff here is really, really helpful and nice and know their candle stuff. Some helpful tips: trim your wicks! Don't put a lid on a burning or recently extinguished candle (it traps the smoke in their and ruins the candle's scent). And don't let your cat sit on a burning candle while he watches you put on your makeup in the bathroom mirror (that last tip is for my wife). Now go set something aromatic on fire! I love this place, it smells amazing! If I could buy every candle in here I would. I was looking for a prayer candle for a situation that I was going through and the friendly lady at the counter guided me to the right one. The candle smelled like heaven, it was just what I needed. It's burned nice and even and lasted about two months with daily half hour burnings. You can tell that these candles are made with love, care and positive energy.
