Let me start with all things good. Bold Fitness in Summerville is a convenient location just off…read morethe freeway. It offers group classes for those who need an extra push or just thrive in a group environment. Daycare is also available for those who need it. Bold is typically very clean, with microfiber towels and cleaner provided to their clients. There are showers onsite and saunas in the bathrooms which is a huge benefit to their members. There are plenty of cardio machines, however that can also be placed in the cons section depending on your relationship with cardio. So, you ask, what's the issue? Me. I'm the issue. Full disclosure, I'm a competitive bodybuilder so I take quite a bit of time in the gym, have certain exercises that need to be completed in a certain order, and I just can't quite do that at Bold. The biggest reason is lack of equipment. Listen, there are a lot of members, and that's great, however when you only have one smith machine, one set of 100lb dumbbells, one hip thrust machine...you see where I'm going with this. Also, people do NOT re-rack their weights and it drives me insane! There seems to be no common courtesy or rules when it comes to this issue. Earlier I mentioned their cardio machines - I feel like if they decreased the number of cardio machines they could maybe add another dumbbell rack and free up the current dumbbell rack placement. I come here because it's the closest gym to me, and on upper body days I can get an effective and quick workout when I go in the middle of the day. It's more of a 3.5 star to me, but again, I'm probably the problem.

Could do a little better on maintenance but if you tell them there is an issue they address it right away. Location is great and parking is plentiful.

I seems as if they keep the equipment on the floor just to make it seem full. The staff told me they are getting new equipment in a few weeks but what the heck am I supposed to do until then? The only real thing I see coming of use is maybe a class if I can (not the reason I joined), or the pool. And the pool is already booked out for classes and whatnot so the adult swim or family swim is only a half hour block...usually when I'm at work. I cancelled my membership on the spot and am mad at myself for wasting money on this sorry establishment.

The original downtown Summerville location of the YMCA has a pool and sauna, gymnastics facility…read morewhich the Ponds location does not have. I am partial to this location because it is the one I grew up with- I took gymnastics here. I'm pretty sure the gymnastics facility is exactly the same as it was 20+ years ago when I attended. The best part about this gym (now that I'm an adult) and location is the child watch- it is open 7 days a week. So, if you have kids, you can work out every day almost all day long (2 hour limit). M-F the child watch is open from 8-8, Saturdays from 8-1, and Sundays i think from 12:45-3:45. It seems like a lot of gyms in the area either don't offer childcare or if they do the hours are really limited. There are many different classes offered as well as fitness coaches/trainers if you want that. There are two cardio rooms, a small one with just a few machines and a larger one upstairs with maybe 10 treadmills, a handful of bikes and I think a couple of ellipticals. I typically come here a few days/week with my two littles, drop them off at the daycare, then go running through downtown Summerville (you are required to stay on the campus while you have your kids in the childcare unless you are going on a run in which case I think you just leave them with your cell phone # and then off you go) or I do strength training in the weight rooms. Like every gym this one gets busy from around 4-7 so you may have to fight a fellow 9-5er for a parking spot and then a machine. After 7 the teenagers usually come out for their daily bulking/mirror staring sesh. During the daytime you can almost always find a machine easily since the people that come are typically SAHMs and older people coming in for either pool time or the daytime fitness classes. During the weekdays this location is very popular with older people, they like to come hang out in the community room and chit chat and sometimes play ping pong. The social scene here for 55+ is pretty poppin. Happy sweating!
